Abdominal actinomycosis is an uncommon infection that may mimic malignancy or inflammatory bowel disease, leading to delayed diagnosis. Retained intrauterine devices (IUDs) have been associated with pelvic and abdominal actinomycosis. We report four women with prolonged IUD use presenting with non-specific abdominal symptoms and varied radiological findings, including abdominal wall, pelvic and hepatic abscesses. Diagnosis was supported by microbiological and/or histopathological findings. Management included IUD removal, prolonged antibiotic therapy and, in one case, surgery. These cases high

This article is an abridged version of the AWMF mould guideline "Medical clinical diagnostics of indoor mould exposure" presented in April 2016 by the German Society of Hygiene, Environmental Medicine and Preventive Medicine (Gesellschaft für Hygiene, Umweltmedizin und Präventivmedizin, GHUP), in collaboration with the above-mentioned scientific medical societies, German and Austrian societies, medical associations and experts. Indoor mould growth is a potential health risk, even if a quantitative and/or causal relationship between the occurrence of individual mould species and health problems

Bile duct injuries (BDI) tend to be more complex in laparoscopic than in open cholecystectomy procedures, and frequently involve young adults with benign pathologies. The ultimate consequence may be a liver transplantation (LT), making this situation one of the most rare transplant indications. Fatal post-transplant outcome is extreme infrequently reported. Aim of this study is to report on our single-case experience and to review the literature concerning lethal outcome after LT for major BDI following cholecystectomy. A 36-year old obese caucasian woman underwent a laparoscopic cholecystecto

Abdominal actinomycosis is a chronic infection caused by anaerobic Gram-positive Actinomyces species. Because of its infiltrative growth, abscess formation, and fibrotic reaction, it may closely mimic malignant disease. We report the case of a 53-year-old woman presenting with abdominal pain and a palpable epigastric mass. Imaging showed a pelvic mass with abdominal wall involvement and a hepatic lesion, initially suggestive of advanced pelvic malignancy. Tumor markers were within normal limits. Because of persistent diagnostic uncertainty, the patient underwent elective exploratory laparoscop

Actinomycosis is a rare chronic granulomatous infection caused by Actinomyces species. We report the case of a 47-year-old man with no previous medical history, who presented with a slowly growing abdominal mass extending to the abdominal wall, initially mimicking a malignant tumor. A diagnosis of an Actinomyces abscess was confirmed through surgical resection and histopathological examination. This case is presented to highlight the morphological characteristics and emphasize the diagnostic difficulties of this disease.

CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 77-year-old male who presented with a three-week history of constitutional symptoms, accompanied by an indurated epigastric mass measuring 10 × 7 cm with a 4 cm phlyctenae, exhibiting local and systemic inflammatory responses.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Abdominal computed tomography demonstrated focal thickening of the transverse colon with a poorly defined inflammatory lesion extending to the abdominal wall and a collection suggestive of colo-cutaneous fistula. The clinical and imaging findings raised a strong suspicion of malignancy. Microbiological culture

UNLABELLED: Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection caused by gram-positive bacteria, Actinomyces, which commonly colonize the oral cavity, urogenital tract and gastrointestinal tract. It causes opportunistic infection where the mucosal barrier is compromised and is often misdiagnosed as malignancy. We report a case of a 58-year-old female with severe abdominal pain and a palpable tender mass in the left lower quadrant. Computed tomography scan with contrast showed thickening of the transverse, descending to sigmoid colon wall and intense contrast enhancement resembling colitis with m

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic, and suppurative disease caused by Actinomyces species, which are filamentous, obligate, Gram-positive bacteria. This report presents a case of anterior abdominal actinomycosis in a 40-year-old female with a history of intrauterine contraceptive device placement. The patient presented with severe abdominal pain, an abdominal mass, low-grade fever, and weight loss. Imaging studies revealed thickening of the left rectus abdominis muscle and pericolic fat stranding. An exploratory laparotomy confirmed dense adhesions from the transverse colon and omentum to the ab

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is an uncommon bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces bacteria that typically progresses slowly and leads to the formation of masses. Although it commonly affects the cervicofacial area, about 20% of cases occur in the abdominopelvic region. Because the disease can be mistaken for a tumour due to its infiltrative mass-like nature on imaging, over 90% of cases are only diagnosed following surgery and histological confirmation. This report describes a case of an appendicular mass, initially suspected to be a malignant tumour, but eventually diagnosed as appendiceal

Actinomycosis is a rare chronic granulomatous disease that manifests with nonspecific symptoms of abdominal pain, anorexia, and weight loss. The disparity in the presentation of this condition presents a tremendous diagnostic challenge. There are few reports of Actinomyces species causing spontaneous bacterial peritonitis without previous localized masses or abscesses have been published. We provide a case of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis secondary to Actinomyces species in a 46-year-old woman with uterine fibroids and a lack of preceding abscess. Although rare, spontaneous bacterial perit

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Actinomycosis, a rare infection caused by Actinomyces spp., typically presents as a chronic condition affecting various regions, particularly the cervicofacial, thoracic, and abdominal areas. Its diagnosis is often difficult due to symptom overlap with malignancies and other infections. This report details a case of abdominal actinomycosis mimicking multiple intra-abdominal tumors, complicating diagnosis and treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old male with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes presented with generalized abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation,

BACKGROUND: Actinomycosis is a suppurative and granulomatous inflammation commonly caused by Actinomyces israelii. Due to its rarity and the paucity of characteristic clinical features, diagnosis of intra-abdominal actinomycosis is challenging, especially when the patient has a treatment history of abdominal cancer.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 72-year-old man who has a history of multiple abdominal surgeries for rectal cancer, including low anterior resection for primary rectal cancer, partial hepatic resection for metachronous liver metastasis, and Hartmann surgery for local recurren

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is an uncommon inflammatory bacterial disease caused by Actinomyces species, especially Actinomyces Israeli. Abdominopelvic forms are relatively rare and may involve the colon as a solid mass, mimicking a malignant tumor.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old Tunisian man, with a history of diabetes, hypertension, penicillin allergy, and renal failure, presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain, vomiting, and bowel obstruction. CT scan showed an acute intestinal obstruction upstream with obstructive tissular mass at the sigmoid colon. Emergency surgery re

Abdominal actinomycosis, a rare and often misdiagnosed condition caused by Actinomyces israelii, typically a commensal organism in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract, can become pathogenic, leading to chronic granulomatous infections that mimic various abdominal pathologies, including malignancies. We present a case of a 59-year-old male with coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes who presented with severe abdominal pain, initially diagnosed as acute appendicitis. During exploratory laparotomy, an ileocecal band mimicking a congenital anomaly was discovered. Histopathological exam

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare disease caused by the Actinomyces bacteria. We report a case series of two similar cases with a mismatch between the initial differential diagnosis, the radiological findings, the surgical findings, and the actual histological result. The first case is a 25-year-old woman with a month's history of right-sided abdominal pain. The diagnostic workup including computed tomography (CT) showed possible acute appendicitis, in addition to ascending colon looking abnormal with inflammatory changes and adjacent peritoneal nodules. A diagnostic laparoscopy revealed a nor

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Colon cancer is a common malignancy and is often encountered initially as locally advanced disease. However, there are many benign clinical entities that may masquerade as complicated colonic malignancy. Abdominal actinomycosis is one such rare mimic.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old female presented with a progressively enlarging abdominal mass with skin involvement and clinical features of partial large bowel obstruction. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a mid-transverse colonic lesion at the centre of an inflammatory phlegmon. At laparotomy, the mass was found
