[Abdominal actinomycosis presenting as a malignant tumor--report of a case and review of the literature].

Actinomyces israelii is a normal inhabitant in the gastrointestinal tract of humans, it rarely causes disease. Abdominal involvement occurs in only 20 percent of all cases and can mimic malignant diseases, tuberculosis and inflammatory bowel disease. A case of a 36 years old female patient with abdominal actinomycosis and review of the literature is reported. Symptoms was presented as an acute abdomen associated with painful epigastric and left subcostal mass. The pathologic process infiltrated the retroperitoneal space simulated sarcoma or lymphoma. Diagnosis was established only at the secon

Actinomycosis of the cholecystic duct: case report and review.

Actinomycosis of the gall bladder, cholecystic duct or common bile duct is rare, with only 16 cases reported to our knowledge. We report a case of actinomycosis in the cholecystic duct remnant of an 80-year-old woman with a history of cholecystitis, choledocholithiasis and cholecystoduodenal fistula requiring cholecystectomy and fistula closure three years prior. Histologic sections of the cystic duct remnant showed several dense basophilic masses containing numerous, dark blue, Gram-positive branching bacilli compatible with actinomycotic granules. Fluorescent antibody staining was positive f

Abdominal actinomycosis misdiagnosed as a secondary bladder tumor: a case report.

A 46-year-old woman presented with a hypogastric mass. The preoperative diagnosis was a malignant ovarian tumor involving multiple organs, including the urinary bladder. Surgical exploration was performed with wide resection of the right ovary and uterus, including the affected ileum, sigmoid colon, and omentum. An intraoperative histopathological examination of the paravesical tissue revealed abdominal actinomycosis. Consequently, bladder resection was not done. The cause of abdominal actinomycosis in this patient was probably due to implantation of an intrauterine device 3 years previously.

[Abdominal actinomycosis with IUD].

We report a case of abdominal actinomycosis in a 54 year old woman using an intrauterine device for a period of 8 years. The most important finding was a tuboovarialabscess at the left pelvic side with involvement of the serosa of the jejunum, ileum, sigma, and omentum majus. Intraoperative exploration showed a solid retroperitoneal infiltration between the pelvic side wall and sigma. Another infiltration was found on the left side of the abdominal wall. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination and the patient was treated by a combination of Aminopenicillin and Metronidazol

Abdominal actinomycosis: barium enema and computed tomography findings.

A case of abdominal actinomycosis is described in a woman with recurrent right lower abdominal pain and low-grade fever without history of appendectomy. Past history included the use of an intrauterine device (IUD) until 10 years before manifestation of these symptoms. We followed up the patient, via diagnostic imaging, for 7 months. On initial barium enema, a polypoid lesion was visualized at the bottom of the cecum and there was constriction of the sigmoid colon; the appendix was not seen. Seven months later, poor extension at the cecum, severe constriction in the sigmoid colon, and narrowin

A rare case of disseminated actinomycosis caused by Actinomyces meyeri.

A case of disseminated actinomycosis caused by Actinomyces meyeri in a 43-year-old man is described. The patient presented with signs of pericarditis, weight loss, dry cough, and subsequently an inferior vena cava syndrome. Diagnosis of thoracic as well as abdominal actinomycosis was made 4 months after admission. This article stresses the importance of considering the diagnosis of the disease. Cure was achieved by administering penicillin for several months.

Abdominal actinomycosis.

PURPOSE: Actinomyces israelii are normal inhabitants in the oral cavity and upper intestinal tract of humans. They rarely cause disease and are seldom reported as pathogens. As a pathogen it causes fistulas, sinuses, and may appear as an abdominal mass and/or abscess. The abdominal mass can masquerade as a malignant process that is very difficult to differentiate, often requiring surgical intervention with resection. Because of difficulty in making a preoperative diagnosis, we undertook this review to determine if all patients require surgical intervention and whether other adjunctive modaliti

Abdominal actinomycosis associated with intrauterine device: CT features.

Abdominal actinomycosis is a severe and progressive peritoneal infection, due to an anerobic gram-positive bacterium, Actinomyces israelii. The presence of a long-standing intrauterine device (IUD) is a well-known risk factor in young women. We report two cases of pelviperitoneal actinomycosis appearing in two young women with acute low abdominal pain. Abdominal CT demonstrated multiple solid or encapsulated peritoneal masses with marked contrast enhancement and infiltration of the adjacent mesenteric fat. Laparoscopy confirmed the presence of intraperitoneal abscesses which contained Actinomy

[Acute abdomen in abdominal actinomycosis].

The case of a female patient aged 34 suffering from abdominal actinomycosis is reported. She underwent emergency surgery for an abscess-forming tumour infiltrating the lateral abdominal wall and giving rise to the clinical picture of acute abdomen. The casuistry is complemented by two further case histories of actinomyces infections in patients with fistulas of the anal region and pilonidal sinus respectively. Abdominal actinomycosis presents itself as a rare chronic bacterial inflammation, usually located in the right lower abdomen, with local abscess or fistula formation as well as tumour-li

Colitis and lower abdominal mass by Actinomyces israelii in a patient with an IUD.

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare disorder. The diagnosis is frequently missed preoperatively. We describe a patient who had had an intrauterine contraceptive device in situ for 5 years. She presented with a painful pelvicoabdominal mass, located between the uterus and rectum, and a colitis-like disease of the distal colon. Culture of the removed IUD demonstrated Actinomyces. She was intensively treated with intravenously penicillin for six weeks. Following this conservative treatment the abdominal tumor and the colitis-like symptoms totally disappeared. During two years follow-up she is free

[A rare case of primary abdominal actinomycosis].

The authors describe a case of primary abdominal actinomycosis operated on because of peritonitis sustained by a tubo-ovarian abscess. They discuss the pathogenesis of the case: the patient had been on intrauterine device contraception till two months earlier and had been operated on for breast cancer. Preoperative diagnosis is quite impossible and only the microscopic observation of the specimen can show the causative agent. Surgical options are reported, stressing the need for an adequate period of antimicrobial therapy.

[Abdominal actinomycosis. Apropos of a case].

Abdominal actinomycosis is a chronic suppurating granulomatosis caused by a Gram positive germ, Actinomyces. Manifestations of this rare disease are usually pseudotumoral syndrome leading to surgical exeresis. The diagnosis is obtained from the pathology report. We report a pseudotumor of the transverse colon which invaded the greater omentum and the anterior abdominal wall. From a review of the recent literature, we observed that most papers deal essentially with a relatively new entity, pelvic actinomycosis related to prolonged use of an intra-uterine device without medical surveillance.

[Abdominal actinomycosis in tubo-ovarian abscess].

Diagnosis of actinomycosis as a specific infection is rather difficult. By a case report it is described that preoperative diagnostics and intraoperative situs do not always exactly clarify the situation. In most cases the definite diagnosis can only be achieved by histological findings followed by an adequate therapy.

[Actinomycosis: value of percutaneous drainage of intra-abdominal abscesses].

Abdominal actinomycosis was localized in the liver with intra-abdominal abscesses. The disease had evolved for several years before diagnosis. Percutaneous interventional radiology allowed taking biopsies which confirmed the diagnosis. Percutaneous drainage of the intra-abdominal abscesses with antibiotherapy was successful without iterative surgery.

Colonic actinomycosis: report of a case and review of the literature.

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare entity which presents some difficulty in establishing a correct preoperative diagnosis. We report herein the case of a 41-year-old woman who developed abdominal actinomycosis involving the left colon and the surrounding retroperitoneum. The patient, who had an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) in situ, presented with left flank pain and the signs and symptoms of an intraabdominal mass, which was initially diagnosed as a neoplasm originating from the left colon or the retroperitoneal space. Thus, a left colectomy was performed, but the histopathological

[Abdominal actinomycosis].

Actinomycosis is a non opportunistic chronic infection caused by a superior bacteria that forms grains in the pus or affected organs. Fifty four cases have been reported in the last 50 years in the chilean literature, 51% were abdominal actinomycoses, 25.5% pelvic and 18.5% pulmonary. Fourteen cases have been treated in the last 9 years at San Borja Arriaran. Of these 7 were abdominal (1 parietal and 6 visceral forms) and four involved the rectosigmoid; two were ileocecal and occurred after an appendicectomy. The presenting picture was of a giant abdominal mass in two cases (one with a colocut

[A difficult diagnosis: pelvic-abdominal actinomycosis abscess].

A laparotomy for hysterectomy was performed in a 46-year-old nulliparous woman who had worn an intra-uterine sterilization device for 8 years. The patient was in poor general health and had had abdominal pain and repeated episodes of fever over the preceding 3 months. An abscess of the abdominal muscle was found peroperatively. No perforations of the small or large intestine were observed. The pathology examination yielded the diagnosis of Actinomycosis. Actinomyces israeli is the most frequency observed Actinomycae in humans. It is a saprophyte organism of the intestinal flora, not usually fo
