A 14-year-old boy presented to the hospital with pain in the right lower abdomen. His condition was diagnosed as acute appendicitis. An emergency operation was performed, and histopathological examination revealed an actinomycete-related organism in the excised appendicitis specimen. On 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, "Candidatus Actinobaculum timonae" was identified, which is the first known case in a pediatric patient.

Actinomycosis is a rare infectious disease that presents as three entities, cervico-facial, abdominal and genital, with cervico-facial being the commonest. Due to its subacute presentation and indolent course, abdominal actinomycosis is difficult to diagnose and is often confused with malignancy. We present a case of an elderly diabetic with no known other risk factors of the disease with complaints of right sided abdominal swelling and presence of abdominal mass on imaging, diagnosed post operatively as a case of abdominal actinomycosis, on histopathology. Abdominal actinomycosis should be co

Abdominal actinomycosis, one of the causes of ileocaecal disorders, is usually considered when other more common clinical conditions have been excluded. Actinomycosis is a rare infectious bacterial disorder caused by the Actinomyces species. We present the case of a 38-year male Saudi soldier who presented with pain in the right iliac fossa since 4 days prior to presentation. This stabbing pain started gradually. Based on clinical examination and abdominal ultrasound findings, an appendectomy was performed. Histological examination revealed appendicular actinomycosis with lymphoid hyperplasia,

Actinomycosis is a rare bacterial disease characterized by chronic or subacute suppurative inflammation. Abdominal actinomycosis is rarer and accounts for approximately 20% of all actinomycosis cases. In the literature, patients who underwent surgery for actinomycosis mimicking malignant tumors have been reported. Most of these patients had mucosal trauma and inflammation signs. It is often difficult to diagnose abdominal actinomycosis preoperatively and often impossible to distinguish it from a malignant tumor. We present a case that preoperatively was diagnosed as a malignant tumor but patho

BACKGROUND: Abdominal actinomycosis (AA) is a rare infection. The aim of this study was to summarize the evidence available on AA.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted. Data sources included Trip Database, BIREME, SciELO, Cochrane Library, WoS, MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, IBECS and LILACS. Eligibility criteria included: studies related to surgically treated AA, in adult population, without language and sex restriction, published between 1966 and 2019. The following variables were analysed: publication year, age, sex, geographical origin, location of lesions, clinical manifestations, risk f

We report a case of abdominal actinomycosis, a chronic suppurative infection caused by bacteria of the genus Actinomyces, simulating colon cancer, and presenting with abdominal pain and leukocytosis. Computed tomography revealed a mass lesion with irregular contours, infiltrative aspect, with extension to omental fat and abdominal wall, in the transverse colon. A surgical intervention was performed due to the suspicious of a colonic tumor. In the post-operative period, anatomopathological examination showed suppurative nodules associated with actinomycetes colonies, confirming the diagnosis of

Actinomycosis of the central nervous system is extremely rare. A 73-year-old woman with a history of abdominal actinomycosis presented with sudden-onset headache. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a nodular lesion at the left precentral gyrus. A cerebral angiogram confirmed a fusiform aneurysm arising from the precentral branch of the left middle cerebral artery. High-resolution vessel wall imaging revealed circumferential wall enhancement of the aneurysm and multifocal enhancement of the M3 and M4 segments of both middle cerebral arteries. The patient had received a 4-week course of ant

Actinomyces is a gram-positive anaerobic bacterium that generally inhabits the human commensal flora of the bronchial system, the gastrointestinal and urogenital tract. In the rare case of becoming invasive under certain circumstances, the resulting Actinomycosis affects most commonly cervicofacial, thoracic, abdominal and pelvic regions. Due to its rarity and presenting with nonspecific clinical symptoms, thoracic and/or abdominal Actinomycosis in particular are highly intriguing clinical conditions that can easily be mistaken for other diseases including malignancies. Astute considerations a

Abdominal actinomycosis is a chronic, granulomatous, and indolent disease produced by Actinomyces spp., a gram-positive filamentous bacillus, anaerobic, commensal in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and pelvic mucosa. Diagnosis is usually difficult and delayed due to its insidious presentation. It can simulate different neoplastic, inflammatory as well as infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, nocardiosis, or mycosis. In most cases, the diagnosis is made postoperatively with the histopathological report, and only 10% of them are diagnosed preoperatively. We present two cases of abdo

We report the case of a 59-year-old Russian man who presented with a painless, slow-growing, epigastric mass. CT revealed a large heterogeneous mass within the omentum infiltrating into adjacent tissues. During diagnostic laparoscopy, the omental mass was noted to be firm, raising the suspicion of malignancy. Surgical en-bloc resection of the mass, including the posterior rectus sheath, transverse colon and small bowel, was performed with primary anastomoses at laparotomy. Histological examination was inconsistent with malignancy and revealed the mass to be actinomycosis, confirmed by microsco

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare clinical entity and it is difficult to make the correct preoperative diagnosis because of its nonspecific clinical symptoms and varied radiological findings. The diagnosis is usually made after the patient undergoes an operation and tissue is available for pathological evaluation. When the diagnosis is made, the patient should be treated with the appropriate long-term antibiotics.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 69-year-old male patient was transferred to our hospital complaining of a palpable mass, painful abdominal discomfort, weight loss, and night s

Actinomycosis can mask malignant diseases. This paper reports a case of colonic diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), which was misdiagnosed as abdominal actinomycosis. A 76-year-old woman presented with right flank pain and weight loss. Abdominal CT and colonoscopy revealed a huge ascending colon mass. Despite the initial impression of a malignancy, a colonoscopic biopsy revealed no malignant cells, but sulfur granules and a filamentous organism suggesting actinomycosis. Intravenous penicillin G was administered under the impression of abdominal actinomycosis but her condition deteriorated r

Actinomycosis is an uncommon, endogenous, and chronic infection with varied and nonspecific clinical features such as abdominal, pelvic or cervical masses, ulcerative lesions, abscesses, draining fistula, fibrosis, and constitutional symptoms. The disease ensues when the bacteria disrupt the mucosal barrier, invade, and spread throughout interfascial planes. Currently, the diagnosis of actinomycosis is challenging because of its very low frequency and depending on the clinical presentation it may masquerade malignancies. Therapy consists initially in intravenous penicillin, followed by an oral

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare, chronic, and often unrecognized suppurative disease. It is caused by an anaerobic gram-positive bacterium, most commonly Actinomyces israeli. Colonic actinomycosis is rarely reported and may be responsible for a pseudotumoral syndrome leading, in the suspicion of malignancy, to a large and mutilating excisional surgery. It is usually the histopathological examination of the surgical specimens that accurately corrects the diagnosis. Here, we report a rare case of a colic actinomycotic involvement taking a pseudotumoral form. The diagnosis was made based on the

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative granulomatous disease caused by Actinomyces israelii. Preoperative confirmed diagnosis is very difficult, so most cases are diagnosed preoperatively as malignant tumors. We report a case of intraabdominal actinomycosis which was difficult to diagnose preoperatively.
PRESENTATION OF THE CASE: A woman, 60 years old, experienced discomfort in her lower right abdomen. She complained of nausea and anorexia and visited our hospital. Laboratory blood tests, abdominal CT, and abdominal MRI led to a diagnosis of a uterine sarcoma or primary intestin

Abdominal actinomycosis is an uncommon pediatric infection that often manifests with a tumor-like lesion. We describe a previously healthy 11-year-old girl who presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain and drainage. Computed tomography scan showed an abdominal wall mass. Surgical debridement cultures grew Actinomyces meyeri. Literature review identified 18 additional pediatric cases since 1964 that we have summarized.
