[Abdominal actinomycosis: a rare differential diagnosis to colon carcinoma and Morbus Crohn].

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare, chronic and slowly progressive granulomatous disease. The clinical presentation of abdominal actinomycosis shows a great variability and it often mimics other intraabdominal pathologies like chronic inflammatory bowel diseases or malignancies. A correct diagnosis can rarely be established before radical surgery especially in patients with advanced tumors and an acute clinical presentation. Actinomyces are considered to be residential saprophytes in the gastroinstetinal tract and require a mucosal lesion to cause an opportunistic infection. Microbiological cul

Abdominal actinomycosis with multiple myeloma: A case report.

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection, for which immune suppression is a predisposing factor. In unusual cases, this disease may present as an abdominal wall involvement simulating a soft tissue tumor as seen in the present case. The presented patient had no signs of trauma or surgical approach and the pathology was considered to be a primary abdominal wall actinomycosis. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult due to the nonspecific nature of clinical presentation, radiographic and laboratory findings. Surgery combined with antibiotic treatment is a curative approach for this relativel

[Primary omental actinomycosis].

We report a case of omental actinomycosis in a female patient with an intrauterine device. A computed tomography had shown an inflammatory tumour in the abdomen. The patient was treated with laparoscopic resection of the tumour and prolonged antibiotic therapy. Abdominal actinomycosis should be considered as a differential diagnosis in patients with abdominal symptoms and unspecific clinical, radiological and laboratory findings. Definitive diagnosis of actinomycosis requires histological examination of affected tissue. Laparoscopic resection seems feasible as an alternative to open surgery.

Hemoptysis as an early symptom of abdominal actinomycosis with thoracic extension ten years after cholecystectomy with retained gallstone.

BACKGROUND: Thoracoabdominal actinomycosis is rare, especially in the context of readily available medical facilities. METHODS: Case report and review of the literature. CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old male patient was admitted because of hemoptysis and a pulmonary infiltrate in the left lower lobe. His history was unremarkable except for chronic gastritis and an elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed 10 years earlier. Following persistent hemoptysis, elevated inflammatory markers, and a non-revealing bronchoscopy, a computed tomography scan of the thorax and upper abdomen revealed a tum

Large bowel obstruction in a young woman simulating a malignant neoplasm: a case report of actinomyces infection.

Pelvic and intra-abdominal Actinomycosis can be difficult to diagnose preoperatively and it may also mimic many other diseases, including malignancies. We present a patient with pelvic Actinomycosis probably caused by a long-standing intrauterine device (IUD). We emphasize the challenges in diagnostic process and stress that though a rare disease, intra-abdominal Actinomycosis should be suspected in cases with intra-abdominal mass of uncertain etiology. The early recognition may spare the patient from extensive surgical operation.

[Abdominal actinomycosis - 3 case reports and literature overview].

The authors present three cases of abdominal actinomycosis that were initially diagnosed as acute appendicitis, an abscess in the left groin and pelvic tumour, probably of gynaecological origin. Definitive diagnosis of abdominal actinomycosis was established as late as postoperatively. Abdominal actinomycosis is a chronic, infectious disease characterized most frequently by non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, bowel obstruction, weight loss, sometimes palpable resistance, and leukocytosis [1-9]. Diagnosis may be difficult and needs to be taken into account, especially

[Ileocaecal actinomycosis - a case report].

Abdominal actinomycosis as an aetiological cause of acute abdomen in immunocompetent patients is considered to be very rare. The authors present a case of a young patient with acute appendicitis in the terrain of specific colitis imitating caecal tumour. Especially nowadays, in the era of globalization, it would be an unnecessary mistake not to think of this aetiological unit when the pain and tenderness in the right hypogastrium with signs of peritonism are expressed.

The polymicrobial Actinomyces naeslundii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis in a patient with ulcerative colitis 2 months after colonoscopy.

We describe a case of an abrupt onset of polymicrobial Actinomyces naeslundii/Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis in a patient with a previously silent abdominal actinomycosis, developed 2 months after colonoscopy when the diagnosis of a left-sided ulcerative colitis was established. Prolonged high-dose ceftriaxone therapy was clinically effective, albeit accompanied by the development of a reversible pseudocholelithiasis that persisted for 5 months.

Para-iliac actinomycetoma presenting as sarcoma, a late complication of appendicitis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is known to mimic several types of neoplasms, leading to morbid surgical interventions. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the particular case of an extensive right para-iliac actinomycetoma presenting as a sarcoma, which to our knowledge has not yet been described in the literature, in a patient with previous ruptured appendicitis. Thanks to the collaborative work between the orthopedic and general surgeons, pathologist and microbiologist, the diagnosis of actinomycosis was made pre-operatively, saving this 15-year-old patient from a tumor resection protocol. Incarcerated umbilical hernia as the debut of abdominal actinomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare infection with a difficult diagnosis that can simulate multiple surgical scenarios such as neoplasms or complications of inflammatory bowel disease. CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a 69-year-old female who underwent emergency surgery due to a difficult and painful tumor, suggesting an incarcerated umbilical hernia. Whitish lesions were discovered in the abdominal wall and a stenotic colonic mass was managed similar to a neoplasm. Anatomopathological study showed abdominal actinomycosis, requiring a lengthy course with penicillin. CONCLUSION

Abdominal actinomycosis masquerading as an omental tumor in a 12-year-old female.

We herein report a case of abdominal actinomycosis in a 12-year-old girl in whom an omental primary tumor was suspected before surgery. The patient began to experience intermittent lower left abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans were inconclusive at this time, but 6 months later, CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations showed a 7-cm, tumor-like lesion in the left abdominal cavity; malignancy could not be ruled out. The tumor, which originated in the omentum and adhered strongly to the left abdominal wall, was resected along with approximately 90 % of the omentu

A case of frozen pelvis: primary actinomycosis of urinary bladder in a young boy.

We report a case of urinary bladder actinomycosis in childhood. In children abdominal actinomycosis is rare and unlikely involves the urinary tract, so it is often misdiagnosed. An 7-year-old boy was referred to a secondary level hospital because of abdominal pain and dysuria. Physical examination revealed a left hypochondrial mass. Hypothesizing a pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma, a biopsy with mini-laparotomy access was performed. The first histopathological analysis did not show any malignant cells, and a 14-day antibiotic course was ineffective. Reoperation and biopsy was needed, and the histopatho

Actinomycosis presenting as an abdominal mass in a child.

Abdominal actinomycosis in childhood period is very rare and a relation to trauma is not well established. Herein we report a case that appeared subsequent to abdominal trauma. A 17 years old boy presented with left lower quadrant abdominal mass and signs of acute abdomen. The symptoms of abdominal discomfort began after a fall from height 3 months before admission. There were signs of acute abdomen at physical examination. Ultrasound of abdomen demonstrated a mass; CT scan findings pointed to a suspicious "internal hernia". An emergency laparotomy was performed. During surgery, a mass located

Clinical features of abdominal actinomycosis: a 15-year experience of a single institute.

This study was designed to evaluate the clinical features of abdominal actinomycosis and to assess its therapeutic outcome. We reviewed patients with abdominal actinomycosis in Seoul St. Mary hospital, between January 1994 and January 2010. Twenty-three patients (5 male and 18 female, mean age, 47.8 yr; range, 6-75 yr), with abdominal actinomycosis were included. Emergency surgery was performed in 50% due to symptoms of peritonitis. The common presentation on preoperative computerized tomography was a mass with abscess, mimicking malignancy. The mean tumor size was 7.0 cm (range, 2.5-10.5). In

Abdominal actinomycosis masquerading as colon cancer in a liver transplant recipient.

Infections in transplant recipients are associated with high morbidity and mortality, making their early recognition and treatment particularly important. Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare clinical entity and difficult to diagnose because of its various and nonspecific features. We describe a 57-year-old patient who presented with abdominal actinomycosis simulating colon cancer 6 years after liver transplantation. The main symptom was abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography and colonoscopy revealed an intraluminal 4.5 cm mass in the right colon, raising suspicions of a colonic malignancy

A case of amoxicillin-induced hepatocellular liver injury with bile-duct damage.

Amoxicillin, an antibiotic that is widely prescribed for various infections, is associated with a very low rate of drug-induced liver injury; hepatitis and cholestasis are rare complications. Here we present a case of a 39-year-old woman who was diagnosed with abdominal actinomycosis and received amoxicillin treatment. The patient displayed hepatocellular and bile-duct injury, in addition to elevated levels of liver enzymes. The patient was diagnosed with amoxicillin-induced cholestatic hepatitis. When amoxicillin was discontinued, the patient's symptoms improved and her liver enzyme levels re

Actinomycosis of the colon with invasion of the abdominal wall: An uncommon presentation of a colonic tumour.

Actinomycosis is an uncommon chronic suppurative infectious disease that is caused by Actinomycetes organisms, which are gram-positive, microaerophilic, anaerobic bacteria. The most common type causing disease in humans is Actinomyces israelii. This organism is a commensal of the human mouth and is seldom pathogenic. When it does cause disease, however, three main clinical types of involvement are recognized including cervico-facial, thoracic and abdominal actinomycosis.Herein, we present the case of a 79-year-old male patient who underwent surgical exploration following presentation with abdo
