[Actinomycosis of the appendix. Case report].

Abdominal actinomycosis is a chronic granulomatous suppurative disease caused by anaerobic Gram positive germs from Actinomyces species. The vermiform appendix and ileocaecal region have been recognized as the most commonly involved sites. Actinomycosis of the appendix is generally acute in presentation, mimicking a common acute appendicitis. We present a case of actinomycosis of the appendix in a 62-year-old male patient. The clinical presentation was as for a common acute appendicitis. The ultrasound examination sustained the diagnosis of acute appendicitis and an appendectomy was performed.

[Abdominal actinomycosis. Three cases].

BACKGROUND: Abdominal actinomycosis is a suppurating affection caused by a positive Gram germ, Actinomyces israelii. Manifestations of this rare disease are usually pseudotumoral syndromes leading to surgical exeresis. The diagnosis is obtained from the histologic report. CASES REPORT: We report three cases in all of which this disease presents with tumoral symptoms. The first affected the sigmoïd, the second affected the mesentery and the last affected the greater omentum and abdominal wall. In no case, the diagnosis was done before surgery. In 2 of the cases reported here, the patients had

[One case of abdominal actinomycosis in a malagasy child].

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare and unrecognised disease. It is a chronic granulomatous suppurating infection caused by bacterial infection. The symptomatology is not specific including a tumour like abdominal lesion fistulized to the skin with issue of characteristic yellow granules. We report a case of a 12-year old boy with an abdominal mass fistulized to the navel in whom surgical treatment needs large resection of the tumour, resection anastomosis of the ileum and temporary colostomy. The diagnosis of actinomycosis was made by histolopathological study of the surgical specimen. This cas

Abdominal actinomycosis.

Intra-abdominal and extraperitoneal actinomycosis are rare infections, caused by different Actinomyces species. However, they have been diagnosed more frequently in the last ten years. We report three cases of abdominal actinomycosis and a literature review of the last eight years. All three patients were diagnosed by means of histopathologic examination only. In one case, an intrauterine device (IUD) was associated with the infection. Therapy consisted of surgical resection of the inflammatory, infected tissue, and long-term antibiotic therapy. All patients are free of recurrence. Abdominal a

Abdominal actinomycosis: a case report.

Actinomycosis is an anaerobic infection caused by actinomycetes, which are part of the normal flora in the intestinal, anal and genital tracts. Although the infection is often cured medically with appropriate antimicrobial therapy, diagnosis is usually made surgically. We report the case of a 41 year-old woman with intra-abdominal mass secondary to extensive actinomycosis involving the hepatic flexura. She required emergency surgery during which the mass was excised. A review of the literature on abdominal actinomycosis during the last 20 years is reported. Emergency surgery has been rarely de

Pseudo-colonic carcinoma caused by abdominal actinomycosis: report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal actinomycosis is an infrequent chronic, suppurative infection caused by the aerobic gram-positive bands Actinomyces israelii. PATIENT PRESENTATION: We report two cases of abdominal actinomycosis, simulating colon cancer. Before operation, both patients presented with abdominal pain and a palpable mass. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed an infiltrating irregular mass in the cecum and transverse colon, respectively. Surgical intervention was then performed under the impression of colonic malignancy. CONCLUSION: Postoperatively, pathologic examination confirmed t

[Vesical actinomycosis: a case report].

A 55-year-old woman had complained of lower abdominal pain for 5 years. A computed tomographic CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a heterogeneous density mass on the left side of the bladder. CT-guided needle biopsy showed only inflammatory cell infiltration without histological diagnosis. To confirm the diagnosis, the mass was resected together with part of the bladder and peritoneum. On the cut surface, the mass was centrally pale yellow and adherent to the thickened hard wall of the bladder and peritoneum. Pathological diagnosis was chronic granulomatous inflammation with actin

Interobserver reliability of ICSD-R criteria for REM sleep behaviour disorder.

In institutionalized adults with intellectual disability (ID), Helicobacter pylori infection occurs at approximately twice the rate it appears in the general population, and it may be responsible for the twofold higher rates of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer in this population. Medical, behavioural and additional environmental factors, as well as level of ID, may be related to the risk of infection with H. pylori. One hundred and sixty-eight adults with ID who were currently, had previously been or had never been institutionalized underwent a biopsychosocial evaluation. This included

[Sonographically guided fine-needle aspiration of abscesses in cases of abdominal actinomycosis].

This report describes two cases of isolated abdominal actinomycosis. a) A 52-year-old man developed a peripancreatic abscess in the course of two years after laparoscopic cholecystectomy and repeated laparotomy because of postoperative peritonitis. b) A 19-year-old man, who had a perityphlitic abscess following appendectomy performed because of appendicitis. The definitive diagnosis of abdominal actinomycosis was confirmed by percutaneous ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration: In both cases culture of the aspirated material yielded Actinomyces (A.) israelii. As concomitant microflora we fou

Actinomycosis imitating an adrenal tumor.

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare condition that may mimic malignant disease. The authors report a case of adrenal actinomycosis discovered incidentally by computed tomography scan of the abdomen. Frozen sections and culture of the mass were consistent with actinomycosis. The diagnosis and management of actinomycosis is discussed in detail.

[Actinomycosis of the sigmoid as obstructive space-occupying lesion of the pelvis. A case report].

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare chronic infectious disease, which may mimic abdominal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or diverticulitis. We report the case of a 46-year-old women with a large bowel obstruction caused by extensive abdominal actinomycosis. Colon contrast examination revealed a stenosis in the sigmoid colon, while abdominal ultrasound showed a stenosis of the left ureter with left hydronephrosis. Preoperative presumptive diagnosis was a carcinoma of the sigmoid colon. She required emergency surgery, which involved both resection and colostomy. As in most cases reported in th

Intra-abdominal actinomycosis presenting as complex abdominopelvic mass.

A rare case of intra-abdominal actinomycosis in a 70-year-old lady presenting as abdominopelvic mass mimicking malignancy is presented. Intra-abdominal actinomycosis may present a serious diagnostic problem both pre- and peroperatively and can lead to extensive surgical intervention due to the anticipation of malignancy. The diagnosis is difficult specially in the absence of characteristic discharging sinus. The diagnosis of this disease, potentially curable by antibiotic is more often made postoperatively by histopathology and microbiological methods.

Actinomycotic bacteraemia after dental procedures.

PURPOSE: To assess role of oral flora in causing bacteraemia following dental manipulations. METHODS: Fifty patients undergoing dental manipulations were assessed to study the incidence and nature of bacteraemia following dental procedures with special emphasis on Actinomyces. RESULTS: Incidence of bacteraemia was seen to be 80% of which Actinomycotic bacteraemia was found to be 30 %. Common species of Actinomyces isolated were A. viscosus (58.33 %), A. odontolyticus (8.33 %) and A. naeslundi (8.33 %). Aerobic bacteraemia was seen in 48% patients. Common aerobes isolated from bacteraemia fol

[Abdominal actinomycosis. Report of 4 clinical cases studied with radiography].

We report 4 cases of pathologically proven abdominal actinomycosis. US and CT demonstrated an infiltrative abdominal mass with ill-defined margins and heterogeneous enhancement after IV contrast. The ileo-cecal region was involved in one case; the mass appeared following cholecystectomy and recurred 3 years after surgical resection in one case; and no predisposing factor was identified in the 2 other cases. In one of these, recurrence was observed 12 years after the first episode. Actinomycosis must be included in the differential diagnosis of invasive abdominal lesions with "malignant" appear
