[Abdominal actinomycosis simulating Crohn's disease].

Actinomycosis is a rare chronic infectious disease that usually develops abscesses and fistulas. It can also mimic other diseases such as cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases or diverticulitis. We present the case of a 67-year-old woman with an unusual form of actinomycosis. Clinically, the disease simulated an inflammatory bowel disease. Computerized axial tomography, intestinal transit and colonoscopy were performed and the suspected 1 diagnosis continued to be inflammatory bowel disease. The definitive diagnosis was made after histopathological study of the surgical specimen. We highlight th

Intra-abdominal actinomycosis with hepatic pseudotumor and xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis in a 6-y-old boy.

We report the case of a 6-y-old boy with actinomycosis, presenting as xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP), hepatic pseudotumor and abdominal abscess. Symptoms included intermittent fever, abdominal pain and significant weight loss. Hepatic and renal tumor masses were suspected on sonography and computerized tomography. XGP and actinomycosis were proven by pathology. The patient recovered well with antibiotic alone.

Abdominal actinomycosis: complication of endoscopic stenting in chronic pancreatitis?

Pancreatic endotherapy is frequently performed in patients with chronic pancreatitis and stenoses of the main pancreatic duct. In a patient with long-standing chronic pancreatitis and treatment with pancreatic stents, metastatic pancreatic head carcinoma was suspected because of infiltration of the neighboring organs and hepatic lesions. Ultrasound-guided aspiration of one liver lesion revealed grains typical for actinomycosis. In the light of this case, an extracted pancreatic stent was microbiologically investigated for actinomycetes in another patient who had a suspicious lesion of the panc

[Abdominal actinomycosis and retroperitoneal fibrosis. Considerations on a clinical case].

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare disease which often resembles an acute suppurative infection or/and abdominal tumour causing abscesses, fistulas and massive fibrosis. The preoperative diagnosis is difficult and surgical exploration is always needed because of major involvement of visceral and retroperitoneal structures. The disease can be diagnosed with certainty only on the basis of findings of bacterial colonies in histopathologic sections and typical sulphur grains in secretions from fistulas. The authors describe a case of abdominal actinomycosis involving the caecum and right colon, cau

Ileo-caecal actinomycosis: report of a case simulating complicated inflammatory bowel disease.

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare infectious disease caused by Actinomyces israelii, a gram-positive anaerobic saprophyte germ that is a normal inhabitant of the upper intestinal tract in humans. Actinomyces israelii rarely cause abdominal infections or actinomycosis. Abdominal actinomysosis is characterised by fistulae and abscesses and may mimic cancer or inflammatory bowel disease. Abdominal actinomycosis is difficult to diagnose preoperatively, and often require surgical removal of the diseased tissue, allowing pathologists for giving the definitive diagnosis, revealed by characteristic "s

Pelvic actinomycosis presenting as malignant large bowel obstruction: a case report and a review of the literature.

Actinomycosis is an infrequent chronic infectious disease. In most cases the diagnosis is made postoperatively because of its unusual clinical presentation. Moreover, abdominal actinomycosis may mimic cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or diverticulitis. Delay in diagnosis leading to inadequate management and unnecessary procedures has been reported. We report the case of a 49-year-old woman with large bowel obstruction secondary to extensive pelvic actinomycosis involving the rectosigmoid and cecum. She required emergency surgery, which involved both resection and colostomy. A review of the

[Actinomycosis of the colon as a rare differential diagnosis of colonic carcinoma].

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal actinomycosis is an uncommon disease. Nevertheless it should be considered in case of unclear tumor-like abdominal masses. METHODS: We report a case of a 49-year-old patient with an intrauterine device. The patient was submitted with a solid and painful tumor in the upper abdomen. After sonography, computerized tomography, gastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy the preoperative presumptive diagnosis was a carcinoma of the transvers colon invading the abdominal wall. Pathological examination after a right hemicolectomy surprisingly revealed an actinomycosis. RESULTS: Based

[A recovered case of actinomycosis in the small intestines diagnosed with ultrasonography].

The authors report the history of a patient suffering from abdominal actinomycosis. The correct diagnosis could be established by an ultrasound-guided aspiration sampling from the small-intestinal abscess, following the sonographic localisation of the lesion. The patient recovered by a long-term antibiotic treatment. Related to the case the authors review the relevant literary data of the past few years and point to the value of ultrasonography in the successful management of the disease.

Rare presentation of actinomycosis as an abdominal mass: report of a case.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article was to report an unusual presentation of abdominal actinomycosis masquerading as a tumor. METHODS: The patient was a 54-year-old male who presented with vague abdominal discomfort and a palpable left lower quadrant mass defined on CT scan. Multiple intraoperative core biopsies were nondiagnostic, and he underwent en bloc resection of the mass and adjacent organs for a presumed tumor. RESULTS: Examination of tissue from deep within the excised specimen revealed sulfur granules diagnostic for actinomycosis. CONCLUSION: Abdominal actinomycosis is an extreme

[Abdominal actinomycosis. Report of three cases and review of the literature].

Actinomyces are Gram positive, anaerobic, filamentous bacteria, saprophytes of the oral cavity and intestinal tract of humans. They rarely cause chronic suppurative infections. Abdominal abscess can masquerade as a malignant process and lead to a surgical intervention with resection. We report three patients with abdominal actinomycosis; the first affected the liver with a favorable outcome on medical treatment, the second of abdomino-pelvic localisation was related to an intra-uterine device and the last affecting the transverse colon simulated a malignant process and required an hemicolectom

[Actinomycosis of the sigmoid colon as the etiology of lower abdominal pain].

We report a case of abdominal actinomycosis in a young woman wearing an intrauterine contraceptive device. The patient presented with right lower abdominal pain. A diagnostic laparoscopy was performed. Intraoperatively two perforations of the sigma were detected, a sigmoidectomy was performed. Postoperatively no problems occurred. Histology revealed an abdominal actinomycosis. In the literature only some case reports are published dealing with abdominal actinomycosis. Women wearing intrauterine contraceptive devices seem to have a higher risk of actinomycosis. In unproblematic cases antibiotic

[A patient with abdominal actinomycosis--diagnostic problems].

The difficulties in diagnosis of abdominal actinomycosis are presented. Clinical manifestations and colonoscopy suggested malignancy. Final diagnosis was made on the basis of pathological assessment of resected sigmoid. Authors underline that in case of "negative" pathomorphological results of material obtained during endoscopy from lesions suspected, benign disease should be consider including anctinomycosis and intraoperative pathomorphological examination should be performed.

Actinomycosis of the appendix in childhood.

Abdominal actinomycosis (AMC) is a rare infection in children. The appendix is the most common intra-abdominal organ involved. It presents as an undifferentiated mass, forming abscesses and fistulas in the right lower quadrant. The case of a 15-year-old girl with a AMC of the appendix detected by the pathologist after routine appendectomy is discussed. Long-term antibiotic treatment and follow-up by ultrasound and laboratory controls are necessary.

[Abdominal actinomycosis after stomach surgery in a patient with long-term rheumatoid arthritis treated with methotrexate].

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 78-year-old woman had a 30-year history of rheumatoid arthritis, of late treated with prednisolone and methotrexate. A week before admission she had first noticed a mass about 3 cm in diameter, at the lower end of a scar from a Billroth II gastric resection for gastric ulcer, performed 4 months before. She reported to have lost 6.5 kg in weight. On admission a moderately mobile, hard mass was palpated on the abdomen. INVESTIGATIONS: Ultrasound and computed tomography revealed a superficial, inhomogenous space-occupying lesion with poorly circumscribed margins
