Dermal fillers are commonly used for facial augmentation, but delayed complications such as granulomatous inflammation and filler migration can mimic chronic bacterial infections, such as cervicofacial actinomycosis, and lead to diagnostic misdirection. We present the case of a woman aged 56 years with a chronic, draining abscess on the right cheek that persisted for 3 years and was initially suspected to represent cervicofacial actinomycosis. Tissue cultures were negative, and histopathologic analysis following excisional biopsy revealed polymethyl methacrylate microspheres and hyaluronic aci

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic, suppurative bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces spp with an incidence of 0.3 cases per million people annually. The cervicofacial area is the most common site of infection and accounts for approximately 50 percent of all cases. Most cases of cervicofacial actinomycosis are odontogenic in origin. Hemoptysis in the setting of actinomycosis commonly occurs from pulmonary involvement. Hemoptysis secondary to isolated cervicofacial actinomycosis has seldom been documented in literature. We hereby present a case of cervicofacial actinomycosis presenting with h

Background: Cervicofacial actinomycosis is an uncommon chronic bacterial infection that can mimic neoplasia or granulomatous disease because of its infiltrative presentation. Diagnosis is often delayed, particularly in pregnant patients in whom imaging and invasive procedures may be limited. Case report: A 25-year-old woman at 14 weeks of gestation presented with a multiple-fistulized cervical mass. The lesion was initially diagnosed as a cutaneous furuncle in a private dermatology practice and treated with topical therapy, resulting in only transient improvement. Two weeks later, multiple fis

Actinomycosis is an insidious infection caused by the facultative anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium Actinomyces, commonly found in the oral microbiome. Among its manifestations, periapical actinomycosis stands out as a rare subtype within cervicofacial actinomycosis, speculated to play a role in the persistence of periapical radiolucencies following root canal therapy. Instances of this occurrence often arise from disruptions in epithelial continuity, stemming from surgical procedures, trauma, or prior infections, paving the way for deep microbial infiltration. A 35-year-old woman presented wi

Actinomycosis is a rare but persistent bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces spp., a Gram-positive bacillus that typically inhabits the oropharynx and gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. It can infiltrate deeper tissues following trauma, surgery, or foreign body presence, forming granulomatous masses of filamentous bacilli. While cervicofacial actinomycosis is the most prevalent form, pelvic actinomycosis has been strongly associated with prolonged intrauterine device (IUD) use, where chronic irritation of the endothelium facilitates bacterial invasion. Diagnosing actinomycosis can be

Actinomycosis is a rare bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces, a group of Gram-positive anaerobic bacilli. These bacteria are a normal component of human flora; however, they can become pathogenic in susceptible hosts by entering through mucosal defects and disseminating submucosally to involve the surrounding tissue. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is the most common presentation; however, Actinomyces can rarely involve other aspects of the head and neck. Actinomycosis in this region is often mistaken for other disease processes, given its tendency to mimic other pathologies. We present a uni

Actinomycosis is an uncommon but significant chronic bacterial infection affecting various parts of the body caused by Actinomyces species. Because of the nonspecific symptoms and rarity of the condition, the diagnosis of head-and-neck or cervicofacial actinomycosis is usually challenging and delayed. A 39-year-old woman presented with an enlarging right neck mass and dysphagia after steroid exposure for treatment of De Quervain thyroiditis. MRI showed a large irregular infiltration mass over the right side of her neck, with a multi-loculated rim-enhancing area over the right retropharyngeal s

Cervicofacial actinomycosis is a rare, chronic bacterial infection that typically arises after mucosal disruption, often due to dental procedures. We present the case of an 18-year-old female patient with a persistent erythematous cheek nodule following wisdom tooth extraction. Initial imaging was non-specific, and prior treatment was deferred due to diagnostic uncertainty. A punch biopsy revealed sulfur granules and histologic features consistent with actinomycosis, though molecular testing detected only commensal flora. Initiation of targeted antibiotic therapy led to clinical improvement. T

Actinomycosis is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by anaerobic Gram-positive Actinomyces species. While cervicofacial actinomycosis is the most common form, involvement of the maxilla is rare due to its rich vascular supply. Osteomyelitis of the maxilla, caused by actinomycosis, is an uncommon but serious condition that can lead to extensive local destruction and soft tissue involvement in patients with implanted hardware and underlying immunocompromised state. We present the case of a 46-year-old male with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus and a history of right maxillary har

Cervicofacial actinomycosis is a well-recognized infectious disease caused by Actinomyces, a Gram-positive filamentous bacterium. In contrast, Nocardia, a morphologically similar, hyphae-forming organism, is an exceedingly rare cause of cervicofacial abscesses, and even more uncommon associated osteomyelitis of mandible. We present such a case involving a kidney transplant recipient who presented with opioid-induced constipation, along with left jaw pain and swelling. CT scan of the soft tissue in the neck revealed a complex cervicofacial abscess with enhancement of underlying mandible. Cultur

Actinomycosis is a rare bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces species, most commonly affecting the cervicofacial region. Posterior skull base involvement is extremely uncommon. We report a case of actinomycosis in a 44-year-old male with a 10-year history of chronic hepatitis B on tenofovir therapy, who presented with a 3-month history of progressive right-sided neck swelling, pain, occipital headaches, and a 10 kg weight loss. The patient initially experienced a sore throat and neck discomfort, partially relieved by medication, but gradually developed a foreign body sensation in the retro

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic suppurative infection caused by filamentous, Gram-positive anaerobic bacteria, primarily Actinomyces israelii, with cervicofacial involvement being the most common presentation. Periapical actinomycosis, a rare central subtype of cervicofacial actinomycosis accounting for approximately 1-2% of central cases, is characterized by an indolent, less invasive course. This case report describes an unusual presentation of mandibular periapical actinomycosis in a 26-year-old immunocompetent female with no history of trauma or predisposing comorbidities. The patient pre

Actinomyces spp. are non-spore-forming anaerobic bacteria that can be part of the normal flora of human oral, intestinal, and urogenital tracts. Mucosal disruption can lead to an infection characterized by granulomatous inflammation leading to abscess formation and sinus tracts classically draining pus with sulfur granules. Most actinomycosis cases are polymicrobial, involving various aerobic and non-aerobic bacteria. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is by far the most common, accounting for more than half of its presentations; however, cases of thoracic, abdominal, pelvic, and central nervous syst

Actinomycosis is an uncommon bacterial infection, caused by the Actinomyces species, and it most commonly presents as cervicofacial actinomycosis. The most common risk factors for actinomycosis are poor dental hygiene, oral surgery, maxillofacial trauma, local tissue inflammation, and diabetes. We discuss a case of a male patient in his 50s with 30 years of poor dental hygiene, complicated by tobacco use, who presented with septic shock and was found to have cervicofacial actinomycosis and bacteremia. The treatment of severe actinomycosis often involves prolonged penicillin-based antibiotic th

BACKGROUND/AIM: Cervicofacial actinomycosis is a rare entity. The manifestation of this disease in the context of osteomyelitis in the mandible is even rarer.
CASE REPORT: This case report describes a 70-year-old female with a painful swelling in the left mandible. The swelling was initially noticed four weeks ago. Furthermore, the patient reported problems with medications concerning her type II diabetes mellitus. Due to multiple decayed teeth, the patient had multiple teeth extracted in recent years, including teeth 36-38 in the left mandible. Orthopantogram (OPG) and computed tomography (C

Members of the Actinomyces genus and Actinomyces-like organisms (ALOs; namely Actinotignum, Arcanobacterium, Schaalia and Varibaculum) are Gram-positive, non-spore-forming rods that are commensal members of the human oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, female genital tract and skin microbiota. Cervicofacial actinomycosis or "lumpy jaw syndrome" - the chronic, suppurative granulomatous disease caused by Actinomyces spp. And ALOs - is characterized by an initially slow and unspecific disease-presentation, which often mimics other pathologies, followed by the formation of painful abscesses and s

BACKGROUND: Periapical actinomycosis, which is reckoned as a subgroup of cervicofacial actinomycosis, is an uncommon, more indolent, less invasive, and limited type of actinomycosis infection. However, it can be considerably underreported due to the low number of periapical surgical specimens that are submitted for histopathological analysis after excision of the lesion with the preliminary diagnosis of typical periapical infections. It is believed that during root canal treatment, the organisms are displaced from the oral cavity into the periapical regions as a result of failure to establish
