[Thyroid actinomycosis: a case report].

Actinomycosis is nowadays a not very common festered chronic infection. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is the most frequent clinical form, and it is due in most cases to Actinomyces israelii. Thyroid actinomycosis has been scarcely described in the literature. The lesions, that are characterized to be notably indurated and to contain multiple abscesses that drain to the surface through sinus tracts, frequently simulate other infective clinical entities and often neoplasms, therefore the diagnosis is delayed in the time. From a case of thyroid actinomycosis diagnosed and treated in our service whi

Rare lesions of the oral cavity: case report of an actinomycotic lesion limited to the gingiva.

Actinomycosis is an infectious disease that frequently has chronic granulomatous and suppurative lesions caused by saprophytic Actinomyces species. Although cervicofacial actinomycosis is known to be the most common type, intraorally and periodontally types occur rarely in a localized fashion. The present case reports on an adult periodontitis patient with a diffuse and atypic actinomycotic lesion which was limited to the gingiva and had an abscess formation, a large desquamation and subsequent exposure of the alveolar bone in the involved region. Diagnosis was based on histopathological exami

Actinomycosis of the masseter muscle: report of a case and review of the literature.

A rare case of cervicofacial actinomycosis arising primarily in the masseter muscle is described. The patient was a healthy 74-year-old woman who was not immunocompromised and had no other primary pathological finding in the oral cavity. The importance of the differential diagnosis for this unusual infection is demonstrated with tumoral pathological findings. Possible predisposing factors as well as diagnostic and therapeutic methods are discussed.

[Intracranial actinomycosis in a child with dental caries].

A diagnosis of intracranial actinomycosis was made in a 9-year-old boy with headache, cranial nerve dysfunction and ataxia. Poor dental hygiene leading to caries and an inflammation in his right upper jaw probably was the cause of cervicofacial actinomycosis with intracranial extension. A full recovery was achieved by treatment with benzylpenicillin. Actinomyces is a gram-positive bacterium belonging to the endogenous flora of the mucous membranes of the oropharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and female genital tract. Disruption of the mucous membrane is the portal of entry for an extremely destr

[Actinomyces parotid infection after mandibular third molar extraction].

Actinomycosis is currently an uncommonly diagnosed human disease. The disease is a chronic suppurative infection caused by micro-organism from the Actinomyces group, most often Israelii. A patient with cervicofacial actinomycosis generally reports a history of recent dental treatment which, usually, involves extraction of a mandibular molar. The common initial signs and symptoms of infection (such as sudden onset of cervicofacial pain, swelling, erythema, edema and suppuration) can be absent. In this case report a 29-year-old man presented a mass in his left parotid area, 1 week after mandibul

Mechanisms of homology-facilitated illegitimate recombination for foreign DNA acquisition in transformable Pseudomonas stutzeri.

Sound for the human voice is produced via flow-induced vocal fold vibration. The vocal folds consist of several layers of tissue, each with differing material properties. Normal voice production relies on healthy tissue and vocal folds, and occurs as a result of complex coupling between aerodynamic, structural dynamic, and acoustic physical phenomena. Voice disorders affect up to 7.5 million annually in the United States alone and often result in significant financial, social, and other quality-of-life difficulties. Understanding the physics of voice production has the potential to significant

Squamous cell carcinoma in vitiligo lesion after long-term PUVA therapy.

This article reviews reports of ACE inhibitor use in pediatric heart failure and summarizes the present implications for clinical practice. Captopril, enalapril, and cilazapril are orally active ACE inhibitors, and widely used in pediatric cardiology, although more than ten other ACE inhibitors have been applied clinically in adults. Effects of ACE inhibitors on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in pediatric patients are similar to those in adults. ACE inhibitors lower aortic pressure and systemic vascular resistance, do not affect pulmonary vascular resistance significantly, and lower

[Oral and cervicofacial actinomycosis. Presentation of five cases].

BACKGROUND: Actinomycosis is a suppurative and granulomatous chronic infectious disease caused by Actinomyces sp. and most commonly affecting the cervicofacial area. AIM: To study the clinical characteristics of patients with actinomycosis, with regard to clinical history, presentation, method of diagnosis, treatment and follow up. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on all cases of microbiologically or histologically proven oral or cervicofacial actinomycosis. RESULTS: Five patients were studied, 2 men and 3 women, 25-69 years old. Four patients had a history of surg

Atypical presentations of pediatric actinomycosis: report of a case.

It is well recognized that cervicofacial actinomycosis is rare in children, especially at maxilla. Actinomycosis involving the maxilla usually is seen as a localized intraoral infection in contrast to classical cervicofacial actinomycosis. In this article, we describe an 8-year-old patient who had actinomycosis involving the bone at the left maxillary lateral incisor region. The diagnosis was based on histologic report because of location and development of the lesion with unusual history. The treatment of choice was removal of the soft and hard tissues with concomitant prolonged penicillin ad

Actinomycosis of the frontal and parotid regions.

Cervicofacial actinomycosis still occurs infrequently and should be included in the differential diagnosis of neoplasms, and chronic suppurative and granulomatous lesions of the head and neck region. The authors present two cases of actinomycosis. Patient 1 was a 32-year-old man who was first seen with a firm, suppurative mass at his left frontal region. Patient 2 was a 36-year-old woman with an indurated mass at her left parotid area. Both patients were diagnosed histopathologically with cervicofacial actinomycosis, but each patient had a different clinical course and different response to an

Actinomycosis of the post-cricoid space: an unusual cause of dysphagia.

Cervicofacial actinomycosis is known to affect many soft tissues and bony structures in the head and neck. However to the authors' knowledge, actinomycosis of the post-cricoid region has not been previously reported. A case of a 74-year-old male who developed actinomycosis of the post-cricoid region after radiotherapy for a laryngeal carcinoma is presented. Actinomycosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of dysphagia following radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx, as early treatment is likely to result in a favourable outcome.

Cervicofacial actinomycosis--an issue still present.

On the basis of the literature the authors present the etiopathogenesis, entry of the infection and the course of cervicofacial actinomycosis and they describe treatment possibility of patients with actinomycosis. They also concentrate on the present, atypical clinical picture of the disease, especially in the initial period. They find the sanation of the oral cavity is necessary for a complete recovery.

[Pediatric cervicofacial actinomycosis - case report and review of the literature].

OBJECTIVE: To emphasize important features in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with childhood cervical actinomycosis. SUBJECT AND METHODS: We report the case of a patient with cervicofacial actinomycosis. We also carried out a review of the literature from the past few years (Lilacs and Medline). RESULTS: We followed a male patient admitted to the pediatric infectious disease ward. Diagnosis was carried out through biopsy of a cervical node and isolation of bacteria. Specific penicillin treatment for actinomycosis was administered for 14 days. Subsequently, we observed remission of the

Case report of regional alveolar bone actinomycosis: a juvenile periodontitis-like lesion.

BACKGROUND: Cervicofacial actinomycosis infection most often involves the mandibular bone and rarely the alveolar crest. METHODS: We describe a 14-year-old patient who had actinomycosis involving the alveolar bone at the left lower dental quadrant region. Resembling juvenile periodontitis, it was difficult to diagnose properly and resulted in devastating dental and periodontal consequences: loss of one tooth with most of its adjacent regional alveolar bone, severely compromising the support of two other teeth. RESULTS: With the diagnosis came successful treatment, including surgical removal
