Natural history and survival rate of familial amyloidosis with polyneuropathy: A nationwide databank.

OBJECTIVE: Hereditary amyloid transthyretin (ATTRv) amyloidosis with polyneuropathy, a rare autosomal-dominant disease, has gained attention in recent years owing to treatment improvements. However, epidemiological real-world mega database of nationwide natural history and survival rates, especially with the specific mutation of Ala97Ser, are limited. METHODS: Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database contains data from over 23 million individuals; Among them, 175 ATTRv amyloidosis patients validated by rare disease registry were enrolled. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard analys

Lower respiratory tract amyloidosis: Presentation, survival and prognostic factors. A multicenter consecutive case series.

Lower-respiratory-tract (LRT) amyloidosis has rarely been investigated. Our study presents characteristics, outcomes and survival of LRT amyloidosis. This multicenter retrospective study, from 1995 to 2017, included 73 patients with amyloidosis and LRT involvement. Respiratory patterns were: tracheobronchial (n = 17), nodular (n = 10), interstitial (n = 14) or composite (several respiratory involvements, n = 32). Interstitial and composite patterns were associated with multi-organ amyloidosis (n = 37, 80%) while tracheobronchial and nodular patterns were associated with organ-limited amyloidos

Incidence and survival in non-hereditary amyloidosis in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Amyloidosis is a heterogeneous disease caused by deposition of amyloid fibrils in organs and thereby interfering with physiological functions. Hardly any incidence data are available and most survival data are limited to specialist clinics. METHODS: Amyloidosis patients were identified from the Swedish Hospital Discharge and Outpatients Registers from years 2001 through 2008. RESULTS: The incidence of non-hereditary amyloidosis in 949 patients was 8.29 per million person-years and the diagnostic age with the highest incidence was over 65 years. Secondary systemic amyloidosis show

Telocytes in human isolated atrial amyloidosis: ultrastructural remodelling.

The human heart can be frequently affected by an organ-limited amyloidosis called isolated atrial amyloidosis (IAA). IAA is a frequent histopathological finding in patients with long-standing atrial fibrillation (AF). The aim of this paper was to investigate the ultrastructure of cardiomyocytes and telocytes in patients with AF and IAA. Human atrial biopsies were obtained from 37 patients undergoing cardiac surgery, 23 having AF (62%). Small fragments were harvested from the left and right atrial appendages and from the atrial sleeves of pulmonary veins and processed for electron microscopy (E

Giant primary amyloidoma of the tonsil.

A case of giant amyloidoma in the left tonsil with extensive osseous metaplasia and a scanty and patchy monoclonal population of IgG Kappa plasma cells, is presented. Localized tumoral amyloidosis is a rare, benign tumour of the upper aerodigestive tract. Organ-limited amyloidosis has been shown to be confined to various systems but, since the lesion was first described, only four cases situated in the tonsils have been reported in the English literature, and none of these had either osseous metaplasia or a monoclonal population of IgG Kappa plasma cells.

Primary amyloidosis of the bladder: a case report.

An otherwise healthy elderly lady who presented with gross haematuria was found to have a papillary lesion in her bladder. Histological examination of the lesion showed amyloid deposits. Investigations for systemic amyloidosis were all negative. Primary amyloidosis of the bladder is a rare clinicopathological condition with only 57 documented cases in the medical literature. It often mimics bladder carcinoma in presentation and cystoscopic appearance. Amyloid deposits in the bladder may be primary (organ-limited amyloidosis) or part of systemic amyloidosis. Exclusion of systemic amyloidosis is

Combined amyloidosis of the upper and lower respiratory tract.

Pulmonary and laryngeal manifestations of localized and organ-limited amyloidosis are sometimes seen, although pulmonary and laryngeotracheal amyloidosis are not always associated. Diagnosis can only be established histologically by the characteristic green birefringence in polarized light after Congo red staining and by immunohistochemical techniques. We describe the case of a 77-year-old woman who presented with hoarseness and an unproductive cough due to extensive amyloid deposits in both the upper and lower respiratory tract, immunohistochemically proven as the A lambda-type.

[Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (congophilic angiopathy): a rare cause of massive cerebral hemorrhage. Report of an "age-related" sporadic case].

Cerebral amyloidosis is a form of organ-limited amyloidosis, which doesn't involve any organ other than brain and which comprises several subtypes, including "congophilic angiopathy" (CA), "senile plaques" (SP), "neurofibrillary degeneration" (ND), "stellate amyloid cores" of spongiform encephalopathies. It is found in 5 to around 20% of human population in people aged 60 to 90 years, the increasing being strictly related to ageing. Usually it is associated to SP and occasionally to ND, being distinguished into familial and non-familial (age-related) variants. It affects intracortical and lept

Organ limited amyloidosis with lymphadenopathy.

Hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy associated with localized pulmonary amyloid is very rare. We describe two cases of this unusual combination, one of endobronchial amyloid with adenopathy and the other of nodular parenchymal amyloid with hilar nodes. In both these cases the nodes contained calcification, and in the nodular parenchymal case in particular, this appearance is highly suggestive of pulmonary amyloid.

Bilateral organ-limited amyloidosis of the distal ureter associated with osseous metaplasia and radiographic calcification.

We report a case of organ-limited amyloidosis of the distal portion of both ureters in which bilateral osseous metaplasia was present as well as radiographic evidence of ureteral wall calcification. This case represents the twenty-eighth report of localized ureteral amyloidosis and the fourth report with bilateral involvement.
