Energy-Based Devices for GLP-1 Receptor Agonist-Associated Facial Aging: A Tissue-Specific Safety Framework.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA)-associated rapid weight loss may be accompanied by facial changes resembling accelerated aging, colloquially termed "Ozempic face". In this review, this proposed phenotype is termed GLP-1RA-associated facial accelerated aging (GLP-1RA-FAA) and is characterized primarily by facial volume loss and skin laxity, with possible but incompletely characterized alterations in dermal-adipose support, adipose-derived stem-cell biology, fibroblast-extracellular-matrix homeostasis, and facial muscle. Demand for energy-based device (EBD) treatment in this p

Beyond Weight Loss: Facial Remodeling Associated with GLP-1 Receptor Agonists-A Systematic Review and Therapeutic Framework.

BACKGROUND: Facial volume depletion and skin laxity have increasingly been reported during weight loss associated with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) treatment. However, these changes are not recognized as a distinct clinical entity and may overlap with those occurring after other forms of rapid or massive weight loss. Evidence regarding their treatment remains limited. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines and prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261415797). PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus were searched from inception

[Diabetic ketoacidosis in cats: pathogenesis and diagnosis].

Diabetic ketoacidosis represents a serious complication of diabetes mellitus. In 1/3 to 2/3 of reported cases, diabetes mellitus is known beforehand. At presentation, affected cats are severely ill. Anorexia, vomiting and dehydration are the most common signs and affected cats usually present with volume depletion. Hepatic lipidosis and pancreatitis are frequent concurrent conditions. It is necessary for the disease to be promptly recognized and diagnosed in order to initiate necessary therapeutic measures as rapidly as possible in order to improve the prognosis of affected animals. Repurposing SGLT2 Inhibitors Beyond Diabetes: Emerging Roles in Cancer Prevention and Therapy.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors were originally developed as glucose-lowering agents for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Nevertheless, accumulating evidence suggests that their therapeutic potential extends far beyond glycemic control, with emerging roles in cardiovascular and renal protection and, more recently, cancer prevention and therapy. This chapter explores the expanding landscape of SGLT2 inhibitors in oncology, highlighting the molecular mechanisms, preclinical evidence, and evolving clinical implications associated with their anticancer properties. Beyond band diagrams: Quantum-dot-engineered heterointerfaces for low-temperature chemiresistive gas sensing-mechanisms, operando evidence, and reliability.

Quantum-dot (QD)-engineered heterointerfaces offer a versatile route to low-temperature chemiresistive gas sensing through tunable electronic structure, large surface-to-volume ratio, short charge-transfer distances, and interface-sensitive transport. Yet QD incorporation simultaneously changes particle size, accessible area, defect and ligand chemistry, porosity, carrier transport, and network connectivity. Enhanced response therefore does not, by itself, demonstrate quantum confinement or heterojunction-controlled transduction. This critical review evaluates metal-oxide, chalcogenide, carbon

Renoprotective effects and safety of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors in diabetic chronic kidney disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global health burden characterized by progressive loss of renal function and high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, initially developed as glucose-lowering agents, have demonstrated pleiotropic metabolic and cardiorenal benefits. However, previous evidence syntheses have not fully clarified the magnitude of metabolic, hemodynamic, renal surrogate, and safety effects specifically in patients with diabetic CKD. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochr

Beyond Skin Laxity: GLP-1 Receptor Agonist-Induced Lean Mass Depletion and Surgical Tissue Quality in Aesthetic Surgery: A Narrative Review.

The aesthetic surgery literature on GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) has focused predominantly on facial volume depletion and perioperative anesthetic risk. Less attention has been paid to lean soft tissue changes accompanying rapid GLP-1-induced weight loss. For procedures dependent on structural tissue quality-superficial musculoaponeurotic system robustness in facelift, fascial integrity in abdominoplasty, and adipose viability in fat grafting-this is clinically relevant and underexamined. The aim of this study was to characterize GLP-1 RA-associated lean mass loss, distinguish it from a

Effectiveness of Adding GLP-1 Receptor Agonists to SGLT2 Inhibitor Therapy in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Population Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Individually, sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have been shown to reduce major kidney and cardiovascular events in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, evidence supporting combined GLP-1RA and SGLT2i therapy in this population remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network, including adults with CKD treated with SGLT2i alone or SGLT2i with subsequent initiation of GLP-1RA between June 2020 and December 2023. Dysregulation of miR-103a-3p in KGN cells and its targeting of KGN: potential role in polycystic ovary syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Rwanda, like many African countries, endeavours to overcome the food insecurity challenge with different initiatives. One such initiative is the 'one-cow-per-poor-family' programme known as the 'Girinka Programme'. With the introduction of every cow into the household, there is a resultant change in household bio-economics. Subsequently, some decisions must be made regarding either the consumption or the selling of milk, calves or manure. This study investigates the effect of household decision dynamics within the framework of this programme on food insecurity in Rwanda. The micro-

Unmasking a rare and dangerous trio in early pregnancy: hyperemesis gravidarum complicated by transient thyrotoxicosis and starvation ketoacidosis.

BACKGROUND: Hyperemesis gravidarum is a pregnancy-related condition marked by intractable nausea and vomiting, often resulting in volume depletion, electrolyte abnormalities, and weight loss. While the typical biochemical profile includes hypochloremic, hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, ketoacidosis is uncommon and typically associated with prolonged starvation. Although thyrotoxicosis has been reported in association with HG, the concurrent occurrence of ketoacidosis is exceedingly rare, particularly in the absence of an identifiable precipitating factor. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the cas

Osmotic nephropathy as a potentially underrecognized cause of acute kidney injury during SGLT2 inhibitor therapy: a case report and literature review.

In recent years, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have become essential therapeutic agents in the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), owing to their established renoprotective effects. Although acute kidney injury (AKI) may occasionally occur during SGLT2 inhibitor therapy, its pathological features remain incompletely understood. Here, we report a case of AKI caused by osmotic nephropathy in a patient with underlying CKD following the initiation of an SGLT2 inhibitor. We also review previously reported cases of SGLT2 inhibitor-associated osmotic nephropathy. A 71-year

Ultrafiltration in the critically ill patient: a framework for personalized care.

Fluid overload is common after resuscitation in critically ill patients and is independently associated with unfavorable outcomes. Ultrafiltration (UF) during renal replacement therapy is a common strategy to reverse this condition. Nevertheless, the optimal timing, dose, and safety limits remain unclear. Observational studies suggest a U-shaped relationship between net UF rate and mortality, highlighting a narrow therapeutic window. Insufficient UF prolongs exposure to congestion, whereas excessive UF may precipitate hemodynamic instability and tissue hypoperfusion. This phenomenon, often lab

Cerebral-Protected Percutaneous Thrombectomy for Near-Occlusive LVAD Outflow Graft Thrombosis.

BACKGROUND: Late low-flow alarms in left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) most commonly result from volume depletion or right-sided failure, but mechanical outflow graft obstruction is an infrequent yet life-threatening cause. CASE SUMMARY: A 70-year-old man with a HeartMate 3 LVAD presented with persistent low-flow (0 L/min) alarms after defecation but felt entirely well. Laboratory testing showed no overt hemolysis, and transthoracic echocardiography excluded right-sided failure. Computed tomographic angiography revealed >90% thrombotic narrowing of the distal outflow graft. The patient u

Safety of a remote disease management program to improve sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists prescribing in type 2 diabetes with elevated cardiovascular or kidney risk.

BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1 RA) reduce cardiovascular and kidney risk in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), yet real-world use remains suboptimal. Remote care models offer a promising approach to improve access; there is limited data on the safety of and adverse events (AEs) associated with prescribing and titrating these therapies through a protocol-driven remote management program. METHODS: The DRIVE trial was a pragmatic, randomized clinical trial evaluating the safety of a remote disease management pr

Influence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on cardiovascular outcomes and mortality benefits of sodium glucose co-transporter inhibitors in heart failure patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: By 2030, healthcare expenditures related to congestive heart failure (CHF) in the United States are projected to surpass $70 billion. Despite substantial advances in guideline-directed medical therapy, morbidity and mortality remain unacceptably high, particularly among patients with concomitant chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a comorbidity reported in approximately 5%-41% of individuals with CHF. Although COPD is independently associated with worse CHF outcomes, its influence on the mortality benefit conferred by sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors rem

Atypical Biopsy-Proven Myoglobin-Induced Acute Tubular Injury in the Setting of Normal Creatine Phosphokinase and Urine Myoglobin.

Rhabdomyolysis can be complicated by acute kidney injury due to myoglobin-induced nephrotoxicity and tubular injury, in addition to volume depletion related to fluid sequestration. It is, however, unusual to have acute kidney injury with normal creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and negative urine myoglobin. We present an atypical case in which a 66-year-old woman presented with acute renal failure of unclear etiology, which required temporary dialysis support. After extensive evaluation, a renal biopsy was conclusive for myoglobin-induced tubular injury. This patient had received an influenza vacci
