In this article, we reviewed and compared some of COVID-19 and pregnancy guidelines; this can be useful for pregnant women including those with a history of infertility specially those undergone assisted reproductive techniques (ART). The general advice given for prenatal care is to reduce face-to-face visits. All women who refer for prenatal visits should be evaluated for signs of the infection at the time of entry. The triage of suspected women should be done separately from other patients. Outpatient monitoring with a 14-day selfquarantine can be considered for asymptomatic infected women a

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Body fluid volume imbalance is common in patients with kidney failure, and is associated with all-cause mortality. This study aimed to investigate the association between fluid volume imbalance and albuminuria in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus without kidney failure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using data from one cohort study, a baseline cross-sectional study of 432 participants and a longitudinal cohort study of 368 participants who could follow up was carried out. Body fluid imbalance was determined by measuring the extracellular water (ECW)-to-intracellular water (IC

Metabolic alkalosis may develop as a consequence of urinary chloride (and sodium) wasting, excessive loss of salt in the sweat, or intestinal chloride wasting, among other causes. There is also a likely underrecognized association between poor salt intake and the mentioned electrolyte and acid-base abnormality. In patients with excessive loss of salt in the sweat or poor salt intake, the maintenance of metabolic alkalosis is crucially modulated by the chloride-bicarbonate exchanger pendrin located on the renal tubular membrane of type B intercalated cells. In the late 1970s, recommendations we

Metformin is currently considered a first-line therapy in type 2 diabetic patients. After issuing warnings for decades about the risks of lactic acidosis in patients with chronic nephropathy, metformin is now being re-evaluated. The most recent evidence from the literature has demonstrated both a low, acceptable risk of lactic acidosis and a series of favorable effects, which go beyond its hypoglycemic activity. Patients treated with metformin show a significant mortality reduction and lower progression towards end-stage renal disease in comparison with those treated with other hypoglycemic dr

Most cases of acquired central diabetes insipidus are caused by destruction of the neurohypophysis by: 1) anatomic lesions that destroy the vasopressin neurons by pressure or infiltration, 2) damage to the vasopressin neurons by surgery or head trauma, and 3) autoimmune destruction of the vasopressin neurons. Because the vasopressin neurons are located in the hypothalamus, lesions confined to the sella turcica generally do not cause diabetes insipidus because the posterior pituitary is simply the site of the axon terminals that secrete vasopressin into the bloodstream. In addition, the capacit

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), also known as Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF), initially emerged over 40 years ago in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Endemic to Africa, outbreaks have been recorded in six African countries since its detection in 1976. Fruit bats are believed to be the natural hosts of Ebola viruses (EBoV), with humans and other mammals serving as accidental hosts. Transmission of EBoV has been reported in various ways, including human to human transmission through close contact with blood and bodily fluids. The virus has an incubation period ranging from two to twenty-one days, fol

BACKGROUND: to avoid a new spread of the SARS-CoV-2 infection, the post lockdown period requires the implementation of effective strategies for the case finding and contact tracing. The presence of asymptomatic subjects in the population, that are responsible for about 30% of the new infections, may complicate this phase. Serological tests for the measurement of immune response could represent an effective tool for the rapid monitoring of the population with asymptomatic infections and for estimating the proportion of immune in a territory, too.
OBJECTIVES: to describe the distribution of the

BACKGROUND: Acute diarrhoea is a common cause of illness and death among children in low- to middle-income settings. World Health Organization guidelines for the clinical management of acute watery diarrhoea in children focus on oral rehydration, supplemental zinc and feeding advice. Routine use of antibiotics is not recommended except when diarrhoea is bloody or cholera is suspected. Young children who are undernourished or have a dehydrating diarrhoea are more susceptible to death at 90 days after onset of diarrhoea. Given the mortality risk associated with diarrhoea in children with malnutr

OBJECTIVES: Magnesium has been 'the forgotten ion' for many years. Over the past decade, however, the role of magnesium in essential physiological functions and several illness conditions have been elucidated. Nevertheless, the investigation of magnesium in cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and nephrolithiasis is yet to be determined. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether CKD cats with nephrolithiasis have changes in total serum magnesium concentrations, and whether magnesium disorders may be associated with other electrolyte disturbances, as well as with prognosis. We also

Fungi are increasingly recognised as harmful pathogens of wildlife. White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a fungal disease that has killed millions of hibernating bats in North America. High mortality has driven research to identify management strategies for the disease. Increased energy expenditure and fat depletion, as well as fluid loss, hypotonic dehydration and electrolyte depletion appear to be key aspects of WNS pathophysiology. Bats with WNS spend energy too quickly and also lose fluids containing water and electrolytes from lesions on exposed skin surfaces. During periodic arousals, bats often

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease accounts for more than half of all deaths in the hemodialysis (HD) population. Although much of this mortality is associated with fluid overload (FO), FO is difficult to measure, and many HD patients have significant pulmonary congestion despite the absence of clinical presentation. Cohort studies have observed that FO, as measured by bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), correlates with mortality. Other studies have observed that lower sodium intake is associated with less fluid-related weight gain, improved hypertension, and survival. Whether sodium intake influ

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative and postoperative management of cardiac surgery patients is complex, involving the application of differential vasopressors and volume therapy. It has been shown that a positive fluid balance has a major impact on postoperative outcome. Today, the advantages and disadvantages of buffered crystalloid solutes are a topic of controversy, with no consensus being reached so far. The use of hypertonic saline (HS) has shown promising results with respect to lower total fluid balance and postoperative weight gain in critically ill patients in preliminary studies. However, co

To date, 13 aquaporin isoforms (AQPs) have been discovered in mammals, of which as many as 9 are located in epithelial cells lining the individual sections of the nephron and collecting tubules. Detailed analysis of the location and expression of AQPs in the kidneys of laboratory animals and humans allowed to define the key role of these proteins in renal excretion of water and other small molecules. Unfortunately, despite the significant advances in knowledge in this area, still little is known about this subject in livestock, including cattle. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine

Physicochemical models have played an important role in understanding, diagnosing, and treating acid-base disorders for more than 100 years. This review focuses on recent complex models, solved using computers, and shows how these models provide new understanding and diagnostic approaches in acid-base disorders. These advanced models use the following physicochemical principles: (1) chemical equilibrium, (2) conservation of mass, (3) electroneutrality, and (4) osmotic equilibrium to describe the steady-state distribution of H2O and ions in the four major body-fluid spaces, cells, interstitium,

Cardiorenal syndromes (CRS) describe concomitant bidirectional dysfunction of the heart and kidneys in which 1 organ initiates, perpetuates, and/or accelerates decline of the other. CRS are common in heart failure and universally portend worsened prognosis. Despite this heavy disease burden, the appropriate diagnosis and classification of CRS remains problematic. In addition to the hemodynamic drivers of decreased renal perfusion and increased renal vein pressure, induction of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, disruption of balance between

OBJECTIVE: Phase angle (PA) determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis has been suggested to be a predictor of death in a variety of disease conditions, but its associations with outcomes have not yet been assessed in a large continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patient cohort. The aim of the present study was to examine the association of PA with risks for all-cause and cardiovascular death in patients treated with CAPD.
METHODS: Incident CAPD patients were enrolled from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2015 and were followed until December 31, 2017. Multifrequency bioelectric

BACKGROUND: Chronic fluid overload is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and can with time lead to poor prognosis regarding to the cardiovascular events. Serum NT-proBNP and OH/ECW might reflect fluid status of the patients, and the maximal tricuspid regurgitation velocity (TRVmax) could reflect systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP). We investigated the relationship between markers of volume status and marker of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in non-dialysis CKD5 (CKD5-ND) patients.
METHODS: Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), echocardiography, and measurement of serum NT-proB

BACKGROUND: Lithium, mainstay treatment for bipolar disorder, causes nephrogenic diabetes insipidus and hypercalcemia in about 20% and 10% of patients, respectively, and may lead to acidosis. These adverse effects develop in only a subset of patients treated with lithium, suggesting genetic factors play a role.
METHODS: To identify susceptibility genes for lithium-induced adverse effects, we performed a genome-wide association study in mice, which develop such effects faster than humans. On day 8 and 10 after assigning female mice from 29 different inbred strains to normal chow or lithium die

BACKGROUND: Multi-organ dysfunction in critical illness is common and frequently involves the lungs and kidneys, often requiring organ support such as invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), renal replacement therapy (RRT) and/or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
METHODS: A consensus conference on the spectrum of lung-kidney interactions in critical illness was held under the auspices of the Acute Disease Quality Initiative (ADQI) in Innsbruck, Austria, in June 2018. Through review and critical appraisal of the available evidence, the current state of research, and both clinical and
