Actinomycosis is a rare infection that can easily be confused with a neoplasm when it forms mass-like lesions. We report the case of a 21-year-old male patient who presented with dyspnea, cough, and stridor. Imaging studies revealed a tracheal mass obstructing the airway. Bronchoscopy confirmed the presence of the mass, and tissue samples were obtained for pathological examination. Histopathological examination revealed actinomycosis. Following treatment with ampicillin/sulbactam, surgical resection, and tracheostomy, the patient made a satisfactory recovery. This case highlights the importanc

Actinomycosis is a rare but persistent bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces spp., a Gram-positive bacillus that typically inhabits the oropharynx and gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. It can infiltrate deeper tissues following trauma, surgery, or foreign body presence, forming granulomatous masses of filamentous bacilli. While cervicofacial actinomycosis is the most prevalent form, pelvic actinomycosis has been strongly associated with prolonged intrauterine device (IUD) use, where chronic irritation of the endothelium facilitates bacterial invasion. Diagnosing actinomycosis can be

Actinomyces spp. are non-spore-forming anaerobic bacteria that can be part of the normal flora of human oral, intestinal, and urogenital tracts. Mucosal disruption can lead to an infection characterized by granulomatous inflammation leading to abscess formation and sinus tracts classically draining pus with sulfur granules. Most actinomycosis cases are polymicrobial, involving various aerobic and non-aerobic bacteria. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is by far the most common, accounting for more than half of its presentations; however, cases of thoracic, abdominal, pelvic, and central nervous syst

INTRODUCTION: Whipple disease is a rare infectious disease caused by the bacterium Tropheryma whipplei. The classic form affects gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal systems; but other forms may damage the heart, brain, or lungs. Due to non-specific and diverse clinical symptoms, diagnosis of Whipple disease is challenging and often late. Adequate and timely antibiotic treatment is essential for favorable outcome.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present a case of a young woman admitted to the gynecological clinic for diagnostic laparoscopy for suspected haemato-/hydro- salpinx and peritoneal endom

Members of the Actinomyces genus and Actinomyces-like organisms (ALOs; namely Actinotignum, Arcanobacterium, Schaalia and Varibaculum) are Gram-positive, non-spore-forming rods that are commensal members of the human oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, female genital tract and skin microbiota. Cervicofacial actinomycosis or "lumpy jaw syndrome" - the chronic, suppurative granulomatous disease caused by Actinomyces spp. And ALOs - is characterized by an initially slow and unspecific disease-presentation, which often mimics other pathologies, followed by the formation of painful abscesses and s

INTRODUCTION: The Actinomyces species is a fastidious, gram-positive, non-spore-forming bacteria that thrive in microareophilic and anaerobic conditions. Infection in the liver, an organ rarely affected by this pathogen, is presumed to be caused by hematogenous spread through the portal vein from a mucosal injury or other abdominal injury or a focus of infection.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 60-year-old male patient has a mass lesion of 15 × 10 cm in the left lobe on computed tomography. A tru-cut biopsy was performed with USG, and fragmented tissue pieces were obtained. In histopathological examinati

Tumours and other diseases of the urachus are rare. A 67-year-old male presented with a history of recurrent urinary tract infection and ciprofloxacin therapy. Cystoscopy suggested secondary involvement of the bullous upper bladder wall. The subsequent CT-based diagnosis was of a tumour infiltrating the lower median abdominal wall, the urinary bladder and bowels. Bowel obstruction developed and this led to partial resection of the involved organs along with a Hartmann’s procedure. Histology revealed no neoplastic conditions, but proved abdominal actinomycosis of probable urachal origin based o

Actinomycosis is one of the greatest 'chameleons' among infectious diseases. It may imitate inflammation, abscess or a neoplasmatic tumor. Moreover, correct diagnosis is even more challenging due to the fact that the disease takes on various forms like: cervicocephalic, abdominal, or affects the reproductive organs. In order to highlight the diagnostic difficulties of actinomycosis, we have decided to describe six cases of female patients (aged 31-73 years, mean age: 52 years) hospitalized due to actinomycosis in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology between 2014-2019. Additiona

Studying the pathogenesis of concrements formation in lacrimal ducts is of fundamental and practical importance. This article attempts to analyze available information related to the pathogenesis of this phenomenon, provides information on the etiopathogenesis, physical and chemical properties of concrements obtained from horizontal and vertical parts of the lacrimal duct, and considers in detail bacteriological and mycotic composition of concrements, as well as various theories of their formation. The analysis helped justify the need to separate the concrements formed in the horizontal and ve

INTRODUCTION: Discharging sinuses is a form of chronic unhealed infection that can present at any site due to a variety of infectious organisms. These discharging sinuses may be associated with mass lesions and lymphadenopathy to mimic some neoplastic processes. Identifying these infections with accuracy and promptness is essential, as the treatment regimens are specific. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of these lesions, along with appropriate cytochemical stains, aids in the rapid and precise diagnosis of these infections and excludes neoplasms at these sites. Also, material for culture and othe

Similarly to other non-spore-forming Gram-positive anaerobes, members of the Actinomyces genus are important saprophytic constituents of the normal microbiota of humans. Actinomyces infections are considered to be rare, with cervicofacial infections (also known as 'lumpy jaw syndrome') being the most prevalent type in the clinical practice. Actinomycoses are characterized by a slowly progressing (indolent) infection, with non-specific symptoms, and additionally, the clinical presentation of the signs/symptoms can mimic other pathologies, such as solid tumors, active Mycobacterium tuberculosis

BACKGROUND: Violence in British psychiatric hospitals appears to be escalating, with nursing staff the most frequent victims of assault. There is also public concern about violence on the part of individuals with mental health problems. In this climate, assessing a patient's risk of violent behaviour has become an important part of mental health care. However, little research has been published into how mental health nurses undertake such assessments in their day-to-day clinical practice.
AIM: The study focused on how mental health nurses make assessments of risk in clinical crisis situations

BACKGROUND: The classical form of Whipple's disease (WD), clinically characterised by arthropathy, diarrhoea and weight loss, is rare. Recently, other more frequent forms of Tropheryma whipplei infection have been recognised. The clinical spectrum includes an acute, self-limiting disease in children, localised forms affecting cardiac valves or the central nervous system without intestinal symptoms, and asymptomatic carriage of T. whipplei which is found in around 4% of Europeans. Genomic analysis has shown that T. whipplei represents a host-dependent or opportunistic bacterium. It has been rep

Even though actinomyces are common oral commensals, actinomycosis is an uncommon oral infection. Cheek dimple creation is a common surgical procedure with rare complications. Bacterial infection with abscess formation and foreign body reaction were reported. We report a rare example-and, to our knowledge, the first-of oral actinomycosis after cheek dimple creation. A young woman complained of a chronic tender nodule of the right buccal mucosa with pus discharge after surgery for cheek dimple creation. Histologic examination showed a sinus tract with actinomyces microorganisms. This complicatio

We report two atypical cases of focal Whipple's disease with rheumatic presenting symptoms. In one of these cases, the patient presented with chronic intermittent polyarthritis, systemic inflammation, and leukocytosis. Tests were positive for rheumatoid factor and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies. There was no structural joint damage. Combined glucocorticoid and methotrexate therapy was only partially effective. Endocarditis requiring emergency valve replacement surgery occurred 4 years later. Evaluation of this event led to the diagnosis of Tropheryma whipplei infection responsibl

Whipple's disease (WD) is a rare, chronic, systemic infection caused by the bacterium Tropheryma whipplei. New molecular techniques and epidemiological data over the latest decade have contributed to better understanding of this infection. The classical form of WD is characterized by arthritis followed years after by diarrhoea, weight loss and malabsorption but other clinical forms without intestinal involvement have been described. Prompt recognition and treatment of the infection is important, as the disease can be fatal if untreated. New studies are required to establish the optimal therapy

OBJECTIVE: Whipple disease is a rare infection caused by Tropheryma whipplei. Although patients commonly complain of osteoarticular involvement, musculoskeletal manifestations have been poorly described. We report cases of Whipple disease with rheumatic symptoms and describe their clinical presentation, modes of diagnosis, and outcomes.
METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study included patients with Whipple disease diagnosed and referenced between 1977 and 2011 in 10 rheumatology centers in France and Italy.
RESULTS: Twenty-nine patients were included. The median age was 55 years. The m

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic actinomycosis constitutes 3% of all human actinomycosis infections. It is usually insidious, and is often mistaken for other conditions such as diverticulitis, abscesses, inflammatory bowel disease and malignant tumors, presenting a diagnostic challenge pre-operatively; it is identified post-operatively in most cases. Here we present a case that presented as pelvic malignancy and was diagnosed as pelvic actinomycosis post-operatively.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old Caucasian Turkish woman presented to our clinic with a three-month history of abdominal pain, weight loss

Atypical presentations of cutaneous tuberculosis are not so uncommon and are frequently overlooked in clinical practice, leading to late diagnosis and increased morbidity. We report three cases of lupus vulgaris with atypical presentations. The cases mimicked other chronic skin lesions like actinomycosis, mycetoma, and so on. Strong clinical suspicion, histopathology, and response to antituberculous treatment led to the diagnosis and all three had excellent response to treatment. Today, when tuberculosis threatens to burst into pandemics again, early diagnosis and treatment are more important

Tuberculosis is a contagious disease induced by Mycobacterium species, acid-fast bacilli. These are mostly human type--Mycobacterium tuberculosis, less often cattle type--mycobacterium bovis or other: mycobacterium avium, kansasii, marinom, scrofulaceum, heamophilium, gordonae. The infection can affect all organs, but pulmonary tuberculosis is the most common form. The importance of tuberculosis is definitely rising in the context of massive population migrations in regions affected by its higher incidence, increased HIV infections and AIDS development. Cutaneous tuberculosis is a particular t
