Actinomyces naeslundii is an important early colonizer in the oral biofilm and consists of three genospecies (1, 2 and WVA 963) which cannot be readily differentiated using conventional phenotypic testing or on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We have investigated a representative collection of type and reference strains and clinical and oral isolates (n=115) and determined the partial gene sequences of six housekeeping genes (atpA, rpoB, pgi, metG, gltA and gyrA). These sequences identified the three genospecies and differentiated them from Actinomyces viscosus isolated from rodents. Th

Actinomycosis is an uncommon, chronic bacterial infection that induces both suppurative and granulomatous inflammation. Localized swelling with suppuration, abscess formation, tissue fibrosis, and sinus drainage characterizes this disease. The infection spreads contiguously, often forming draining sinuses that extrude characteristic but not pathognomonic "sulfur granules." Infections of the oral and cervicofacial regions are most common; however, any site in the body can be infected and it often mimics malignancy. Other regions that are often affected are the thoracic and abdominopelvic, as we

Actinomycosis is a chronic, specific inflammation which is characterized by suppuration, abscess formation, tissue fibrosis and granuloma formation. Actinomycosis has three main forms (cervicofacial, which is the most frequent, approximately 60%, pulmonary and abdominal), but other regions of the body can be involved, too (e.g. neck, ovaries, bones), that is why its differential diagnosis becomes more and more relevant. Regarding its treatment, the majority of authors recommends the combination of surgical and antibiotic treatment. The authors of this article present a typical case of cervicof

Apical periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of periradicular tissues caused by aetiological agents of endodontic origin. Persistent apical periodontitis occurs when root canal treatment of apical periodontitis has not adequately eliminated intraradicular infection. Problems that lead to persistent apical periodontitis include: inadequate aseptic control, poor access cavity design, missed canals, inadequate instrumentation, debridement and leaking temporary or permanent restorations. Even when the most stringent procedures are followed, apical periodontitis may still persist as asym

Mycetoma is a pathological process during which eumycetomic (fungal) or actinomycotic causative agents from exogenous source produce grains. Medical treatment is available for actinomycetomas and surgery is still the main treatment for eumycetoma. We report 90 cases of actinomycetoma occuring in male adult patients coming mainly from central Senegal. Patients living far from health structures consult after a long evolution period for tumors and pains which prevent them from carrying out their activities. The three etiological agents in our patients were Actinomadura pelletieri (60 cases), Acti

PURPOSE: Endocarditic lesions (infectious endocarditis) associated with Whipple's disease are exceptional. We report five cases from the cardiovascular and pneumologic hospital Louis Pradel in Lyon.
METHOD: We have collected all cases of Tropheryma whipplei endocarditis diagnosed between 1995 and 2004.
RESULTS: Five men with a mean age of 53 years at time of diagnosis. The symptoms were essentially cardiovascular: murmur, embolism in 3 cases, and heart failure secondary to valvular insufficiency in 2 cases. The valvular involvement, double in 3 cases, was more often aortic. Vegetations were

Knowledge about the arterial abnormalities in Whipple's disease can be useful for our better understanding of both Whipple's disease and the more general question of pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. There are several notable morphological features of Whipple's arteriopathy. First, it appears to involve primarily arteries one millimeter or less in diameter. Second, there is very little evidence of inflammation accompanying invasion of any or all three layers of the walls of affected arteries, and there is almost no evidence of local attraction of platelets to these sites of arterial injury. Thi

We report a case of actinomycosis with uncommon localizations that was due to Actinomyces meyeri. Although penicillin is the standard treatment for this condition, our patient was treated successfully with imipenem. Actinomyces organisms are important constituents of the normal flora of mucous membranes and are considered opportunistic pathogens; these organisms may produce infection after local trauma, surgery, or aspiration. The mains forms of actinomycosis are cervicofacial, thoracic, and abdominal; most cases are due to Actinomyces israelii, whereas other Actinomyces species are occasional

Pulmonary infections with formation of bacterial granules are rare. We reviewed the clinical and pathologic data from 18 cases diagnosed using surgical specimens in our department during the last 10 years. Three clinicopathologic forms were observed: endobronchial infections complicating tuberculous sequelae or bronchiectases (n = 7), tumor-like lesions (n = 8), and diffuse pneumonia (n = 3). The two latter forms contrasted with the former by a male predominance, association with general debilitating conditions and inflammatory syndrome, and pathologically by smaller granules often located in

The tonsils of eleven pigs and the mammary glands of a sow were used to investigate actinomycotic lesions due to Actinomyces sp. infection. At necropsy, there was no abnormality on these tonsils, on the other hand, numerous abscesses containing sulfur granules were found in the mammary. Histopathologically, the Actinomyces sp. lesions were noted as crypt abscesses in the tonsils and as pus-forming granulomas in the mammary glands. The microorganisms in both lesions were composed of bead-like cocci, bacillary cells and short, branching filaments, those cells being positive by the Gram's and Gro

An association between inflammatory bowel disease and enteroarthritis and the spondyloarthropathies has been known of for a while. Within the past few years, ileocolonic studies have expanded the diagnostic accuracy of asymptomatic gut inflammation, and it now seems evident that chronic gut inflammation is either associated with or is even the cause of chronicity of peripheral arthritis and the development of ankylosing spondylitis. This situation, previously studied in adult patients, now appears also to affect pediatric patients with spondyloarthropathies, who seem to have similar genetic an

Actinomycetal infections by Actinomyces, Nocardia, and Streptomyces appear to be increasing in incidence. Clinical and laboratory data from twelve patients believed to have subclinical actinomycete-streptomycete infections (ASI)* are presented. It is proposed that the recent epidemic of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) may have been caused by pre-existing host ASI that generated toxic agents when individuals ingested supplemental L-tryptophan (LT). LT is the substrate used by streptomycetes to synthesize actinomycins, extremely cytotoxic metabolites that could have accounted for symptoms se

The intra- and intergeneric relationships of the genus Actinomyces were determined by comparing long 16S rRNA sequences, generated by reverse transcriptase. All species formed a phylogenetically coherent cluster in which Actinomyces bovis, A. viscosus, A. naeslundii, A. odontolyticus and A. israelii constituted genetically well defined species. A. israelii DSM 43322 (serotype 2) was not closely related to three other strains of this species (serotype 1) and, as judged from phylogenetic distances, could be accommodated within A. naeslundii, or represent a new species. In contrast to previous fi

A variety of clinical forms of actinomycosis, difficulties of its early diagnosis and particularly of the differential diagnosis between this condition and tuberculosis, nocardiosis, aspergillosis necessitate the development of present-day methods for the early laboratory diagnosis of actinomycosis. Basing on the data on present-day methods for isolation of anaerobic and microaerobic diphtheroids, the authors characterize the bacterial associations occurring in maxillofacial actinomycosis and other odontogenic processes, discuss problems in isolation and identification of Actinomyces cultures.

We live in tenuous proximity to a vast array of microbial agents that inhabit the balanced ecosystem of the gut. When an alteration in that balance occurs our immune system can be challenged abruptly with pathogens expressing microbial antigens that may form immune complexes or that may induce autoimmunity by cross-reactivity with host endogenous antigens. Toxins and proteolytic enzymes, normally limited to bowel lumen, may evade local mucosal defences and effect systemic inflammatory responses. Understanding the pathogenic events behind arthritis related to GI pathology will provide insight n

Actinomycosis is an anaerobic infection caused by actinomycetes, which are part of the normal flora in the oral cavity and intestine. Antecedent disease or surgery predisposes to infection, and involved tissue becomes indurated and forms multiple draining fistulae discharging characteristic sulfur granules. Three principal clinical syndromes are described: cervicofacial, thoracic, and abdominal. Recently pelvic actinomycosis has become more prevalent and associated with women who use the intrauterine device. The diagnosis of actinomycosis usually is made at surgery. Actinomycosis was at one time a common diagnosis in this country. It still is fairly common in some parts of the world. As the numbers of antibiotics and indications for their use have increased, the disease has almost become a medical rarity in the United States. This fact might be thought a paradox in view of the universal presence of the actinomyces organisms in every human mouth. However, it is perhaps not well recognized that the actinomyces are true bacteria, and that they are particularly sensitive to most of the common antibacterials in current usage. These facts have combined to decre

Synovial tissue has been examined by electron microscopy from patients suffering from either sero-positive or sero-negative inflammatory arthropathies to allow direct comparison of the ultrastructural changes found in these groups and to confirm and extend observations previously made in a smaller group of sero-negative arthropathies. Both groups have been compared with material from healthy controls. The sero-positive group comprised 13 cases of 'definite' or 'classical' rheumatoid arthritis. The sero-negative group consisted of 9 cases of arthritis secondary to Crohn's disease (3); Reiter's

Pelvic actinomycosis associated with the use of an intrauterine device (IUD) is a recently recognized combination. The usual manifestation of the disease are those of mild pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in a woman who uses an IUD. The disease is easily recognized on Papanicolaou-stained cervicovaginal smears. Early treatment involves removal of the IUD and administration of penicillin. Rarely, the disease may be serious and may require drainage of intra-abdominal abscesses, hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy, or both. The second known death from pelvic actinomycosis associated with use
