Co-existing mental and somatic conditions in Swedish children with the avoidant restrictive food intake disorder phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a feeding and eating disorder, characterized by limited variety and/or quantity of food intake impacting physical health and psychosocial functioning. Children with ARFID often present with a range of psychiatric and somatic symptoms, and therefore consult various pediatric subspecialties; large-scale studies mapping comorbidities are however lacking. To characterize health care needs of people with ARFID, we systematically investigated ARFID-related mental and somatic conditions in 616 children with ARFID and >30,000 children wi

Development and validation of a lifetime prediction model for incident type 2 diabetes in patients with established cardiovascular disease: the CVD2DM model.

AIMS: Identifying patients with established cardiovascular disease (CVD) who are at high risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) may allow for early interventions, reducing the development of T2D and associated morbidity. The aim of this study was to develop and externally validate the CVD2DM model to estimate the 10-year and lifetime risks of T2D in patients with established CVD. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sex-specific, competing risk-adjusted Cox proportional hazard models were derived in 19 281 participants with established CVD and without diabetes at baseline from the UK Biobank. The core model's pre-spe

The quality of reporting in case reports of permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although randomized trials and systematic reviews provide the best evidence to guide medical practice, many permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus (PNDM) studies have been published as case reports. However, the quality of these studies has not been assessed. The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which the current case reports for PNDM comply with the Case Report (CARE) guidelines and to explore variables associated with the reporting. METHOD: Six English and four Chinese databases were searched from their inception to December 2022 for PNDM case reports. The 23 item

The relationship between repeated measurements of HbA1c and risk of coronary events among the common haptoglobin phenotype groups: the Action for Health in Diabetes (Look AHEAD) study.

BACKGROUND: In the ACCORD study, participants with the haptoglobin (Hp) 2-2 phenotype and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ≥ 8.0% had a higher risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) compared to those with HbA1c 7.0-7.9%. However, this association was not observed in participants without the Hp2-2 phenotype. The optimal glycemic target for CAD prevention for the Hp phenotypes remains uncertain and may vary based on demographic and clinical factors. OBJECTIVE: To investigate how reaching clinically relevant HbA1c targets relates to the risk of CAD in different Hp phenotype groups among a diverse coho

Effect of the National Enhanced Service for weight management on the content of annual review consultations for patients living with obesity and hypertension and/or diabetes.

Guidelines specify that clinicians should support patients living with obesity by referring to weight management programmes (WMPs), but clinicians do so infrequently. To provide additional support to patients living with obesity and weight-related conditions, the UK government instated the National Enhanced Service (NES) for weight management in England, including a reimbursement to general practices for referring eligible patients to WMPs. To assess the impact of the NES on conversations regarding weight and relevant behavioural risk factors in primary care consultations we recruited 11 medic

'Online boundary-work': How people with diabetes negotiate what counts as legitimate knowledge in Facebook peer support groups.

People with chronic conditions such as diabetes use social media to interact with peers. While these online interactions allow them to exchange advice and gain insight into how others cope with their condition, concerns about 'misinformation' being shared are persistently raised, especially among medical professionals. Rather than assessing whether information shared on social media is 'correct' from a clinical perspective, we explore how people with diabetes negotiate what counts as legitimate knowledge as they interact in Facebook groups. Empirically, we draw on a six-month observation of in

Type 1 diabetes and combined acute and chronic complications are associated with risk of progression of liver fibrosis: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: There has been controversy and uncertainty regarding the causal relationship between type 1 diabetes, its consequences, liver fibrosis, and cirrhosis. In order to determine the causal relationship, we conducted a Mendelian randomization study (MR). METHODS: For the first time, we subjected multiple diabetes data to analyze its relationship with the progression of liver fibrosis. Once the instrumental variables had been extracted, we assessed them employing Cochran's Q multi-analysis, inverse variance weighted, MR-Egger, MR-PRESSO, weighted mode, and weighted median. RESULTS: Gene

Sepsis endotypes identified by host gene expression across global cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis from infection is a global health priority and clinical trials have failed to deliver effective therapeutic interventions. To address complicating heterogeneity in sepsis pathobiology, and improve outcomes, promising precision medicine approaches are helping identify disease endotypes, however, they require a more complete definition of sepsis subgroups. METHODS: Here, we use RNA sequencing from peripheral blood to interrogate the host response to sepsis from participants in a global observational study carried out in West Africa, Southeast Asia, and North America (N = 494)

Transplacental permeability of heavy metals in relation to newborn sex - evidence from the neurodevelopment project.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of dyslipidemia in high-risk patients specifies a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol <100 mg/dL. The efficacy of higher-potency regimens in clinical practice in patients who have not achieved their LDL goal on generic therapy is not well characterized. The primary objective of this study was to determine the LDL-lowering efficacy of higher-potency strategies (ezetimibe/simvastatin, rosuvastatin, and atorvastatin) in high-risk patients who were switched from simvastatin therapy. Secondary objectives were to evaluate patient adherence to these therapies, determine the

Aquaporins in Obesity.

Obesity is one of the most important metabolic disorders of this century and is associated with a cluster of the most dangerous cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as insulin resistance and diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, collectively named Metabolic Syndrome. The role of aquaporins (AQP) in glycerol metabolism facilitating glycerol release from the adipose tissue and distribution to various tissues and organs unveils these membrane channels as important players in lipid balance and energy homeostasis and points to their involvement in a variety of pathophysiological mechanisms
