Actinomycosis of the Tongue Mimicking a Benign Tumor: A Case Report With Ultrasonographic and Histopathological Findings.

We report a rare case of actinomycosis arising in the tongue. A female patient in her 70s presented to our department with swelling of the tongue. Despite only minimal mucosal change, a submucosal indurated mass was observed. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-circumscribed mass-like lesion within the tongue muscle. Ultrasonography showed punctate hyperechoic foci within a hypoechoic lesion. As there were few signs of infection, a benign tumorous lesion was suspected, and an excisional biopsy was performed. Histopathological examination indicated sulfur granules in th

Atypical Presentation of Ileal Actinomycosis Mimicking a Neuroendocrine Tumor: A Case Report.

We report a diagnostically challenging case of ileal actinomycosis in a 43-year-old woman presenting with features of subacute intestinal obstruction, radiologically and functionally mimicking a small bowel neuroendocrine tumor (NET). The patient's presentation, imaging, and endoscopic findings initially raised a strong suspicion of malignancy, including differential consideration for NETs due to a mid-ileal stricture with an associated mesenteric mass, avid uptake on DOTATOC PET/CT, and mesenteric lymphadenopathy. However, the histopathology of the resected specimen confirmed an actinomycotic

Actinomyces Europaeus: A Case Report of a Rare Subcutaneous Infection Following Abdominoplasty and a Review of the Literature.

Actinomyces europaeus is an emerging Gram-positive bacterium associated with skin and soft tissue infections. It exhibits intrinsic resistance to multiple antibiotics, and its fastidious growth and the polymicrobial nature of infections often delay diagnosis and treatment. This report highlights a rare case of A. europaeus infection following elective surgery. A 78-year-old woman presented with asthenia and purulent umbilical discharge two months after abdominoplasty. A CT scan revealed a large supra-fascial fluid collection. She underwent surgical debridement and lavage. Cultures identified A

Case Report: Pediatric mediastinal actinomycosis mimicking lymphoma diagnosed by tissue metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

Mediastinal actinomycosis is rare in children, and when it presents as a mass-like lesion, its clinical and imaging features overlap substantially with lymphoma, making differential diagnosis extremely challenging. We report a 2-year-1-month-old girl admitted with fever and cough. Contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography (CT) showed multiple enlarged mediastinal and bilateral hilar lymph nodes coalescing into a mass-like lesion with heterogeneous enhancement and small hypoenhancing foci, encasement of adjacent mediastinal vessels, and compression of the left main bronchus and the origin of

Pediatric middle ear actinomycosis: report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Middle ear actinomycosis is a rare condition, with approximately 50 reported cases in the literature. It typically occurs due to dissemination through the Eustachian tube from the nasopharynx to the middle ear and mastoid cavity and presents as chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), requiring long-term antibiotics and surgical debridement. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present two pediatric patients with middle ear actinomycosis. The first is a 7-year-old boy with Joubert syndrome who presented with right-sided persistent otorrhea 6 months after ventilation tube (VT) insertion. Histopath

A Rare Case in a Child: Actinomycosis of the Middle Ear.

BACKGROUND: Actinomyces is an anaerobic, filamentous bacterium that causes granuloma formation and suppurative infection. Although it is part of the normal flora of the oropharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and genital tract, it is rarely encountered in the middle ear and mastoid cavity. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 4-year-old child diagnosed with chronic otitis media who had experienced ear pain and discharge for more than 3 months and whose symptoms did not resolve despite antibiotic therapy. Actinomyces was identified histopathologically in a specimen obtained from the middle ear du

Postoperative abdominal wall actinomycosis mimicking malignancy: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Actinomycosis is an uncommon chronic bacterial infection that may present as an infiltrative mass mimicking malignancy. Abdominal wall involvement, particularly after abdominal surgery, is rare and may pose a considerable diagnostic challenge. STUDY SELECTION: A focused narrative review of PubMed was conducted to identify reports of abdominal and abdominal wall actinomycosis, focusing on clinical presentation, predisposing factors, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. Eleven relevant case reports were included in the comparative analysis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a

Chronic Facial Abscess Mimicking Cervicofacial Actinomyces From Dermal Filler Migration: Case Report.

Dermal fillers are commonly used for facial augmentation, but delayed complications such as granulomatous inflammation and filler migration can mimic chronic bacterial infections, such as cervicofacial actinomycosis, and lead to diagnostic misdirection. We present the case of a woman aged 56 years with a chronic, draining abscess on the right cheek that persisted for 3 years and was initially suspected to represent cervicofacial actinomycosis. Tissue cultures were negative, and histopathologic analysis following excisional biopsy revealed polymethyl methacrylate microspheres and hyaluronic aci

Disguised and Dangerous: A Case of Cervicofacial Actinomycosis Presenting With Hemoptysis.

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic, suppurative bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces spp with an incidence of 0.3 cases per million people annually. The cervicofacial area is the most common site of infection and accounts for approximately 50 percent of all cases. Most cases of cervicofacial actinomycosis are odontogenic in origin. Hemoptysis in the setting of actinomycosis commonly occurs from pulmonary involvement. Hemoptysis secondary to isolated cervicofacial actinomycosis has seldom been documented in literature. We hereby present a case of cervicofacial actinomycosis presenting with h

Cervicofacial Actinomycosis Presenting as a Fistulized Neck Mass During Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Background: Cervicofacial actinomycosis is an uncommon chronic bacterial infection that can mimic neoplasia or granulomatous disease because of its infiltrative presentation. Diagnosis is often delayed, particularly in pregnant patients in whom imaging and invasive procedures may be limited. Case report: A 25-year-old woman at 14 weeks of gestation presented with a multiple-fistulized cervical mass. The lesion was initially diagnosed as a cutaneous furuncle in a private dermatology practice and treated with topical therapy, resulting in only transient improvement. Two weeks later, multiple fis

Retained intrauterine devices and abdominal actinomycosis, diagnostic challenges from a case series.

Abdominal actinomycosis is an uncommon infection that may mimic malignancy or inflammatory bowel disease, leading to delayed diagnosis. Retained intrauterine devices (IUDs) have been associated with pelvic and abdominal actinomycosis. We report four women with prolonged IUD use presenting with non-specific abdominal symptoms and varied radiological findings, including abdominal wall, pelvic and hepatic abscesses. Diagnosis was supported by microbiological and/or histopathological findings. Management included IUD removal, prolonged antibiotic therapy and, in one case, surgery. These cases high

Nucleocytoplasmic transport in gynaecological cancer: From mechanisms to therapeutic potential (Review).

BACKGROUND: In recent times due to the advancement of haemodialysis techniques, there is increase in the life span of the patients with end-stage renal disease, which tends to increase the risk of complications of bacteraemia due to skin penetration for blood access and leading to propensity for more skeletal and spinal complications. Hence, early diagnosis of spine infection and early initiation of appropriate therapy are important in ensuring successful treatment and preventing further morbidity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 22 males and 12 females who were known case of end-st

Pulmonary Actinomycosis Masquerading as Malignancy.

An 81-year-old ex-smoker with chronic cough and weight loss had imaging showing right upper-lobe nodules, tree-in-bud changes and bronchial obstruction. Bronchoscopy revealed a right upper lobe bronchus polypoidal mass with histological evidence of actinomycosis. This case highlights actinomycosis mimicking malignancy and the need to exclude wider differentials and cancer mimics.

Unusual Suspect Causing Cavitary Pneumonia in a Vape Smoker.

Actinomyces species are facultative anaerobic bacteria that are part of the normal flora of the human oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and vaginal tract. These bacteria are known to cause actinomycosis, a rare chronic granulomatous infection that typically presents as a slowly progressive disease. Pulmonary actinomycosis, although rare, has long been recognized as a distinct form of pneumonia, typically affecting individuals with underlying risk factors such as poor oral hygiene, aspiration risk, pre-existing lung disease, or immunocompromising conditions. The recent surge in electronic ci

Pulmonary Actinomycosis Mimicking Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Pulmonary actinomycosis is a rare chronic infection that can closely mimic pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in both clinical presentation and radiological appearance, particularly in tuberculosis-endemic regions. Delayed or missed diagnosis may result in prolonged inappropriate therapy and disease progression. We report a case of pulmonary actinomycosis in a diabetic patient initially treated empirically for pulmonary tuberculosis, highlighting the importance of histopathological examination and anaerobic culture in patients with poor response to anti-tubercular therapy.

Endobronchial Actinomycosis - The Great Masquerader.

Actinomycosis is a rare infection caused by Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic bacteria of the Actinomyceataceae family. Pulmonary Actinomycosis has a strong clinical and radiological resemblance to tuberculosis, lung abscess, and lung cancer, leading to missed or delayed diagnosis. We present a case of an elderly male with a productive cough and weight loss with right upper lobe consolidation on imaging. Definitive diagnosis was by histopathology; drawing samples by fiber-optic bronchoscopy, broncho-alveolar lavage, and endobronchial ultrasound. Tuberculosis, fungal infection, and malignanc
