Long-term survival following hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) in childhood continues to improve, and patients are thus increasingly faced with the late effects of treatment. Infertility is very common for both males and females following HSCT and is one of the most distressing sequelae. PURPOSE: Patients with single ventricle anatomy palliated with Fontan operation are at risk for thromboembolism, arrhythmia, and heart failure rendering pregnancy high risk or even contraindicated. Infertility and high rates of first trimester miscarriage are not uncommon. In vitro fertilization (IVF) with or without gestational surrogacy can be an option, but poses risks during ovarian stimulation, oocyte retrieval, and the post-procedural period. We present six cases of women with complex congenital heart disease status post Fontan operation who underwent successful IVF.

The purpose of the study was to report our experience of the management of complications following the insertion of a peritoneovenous shunt for intractable malignant ascites. From June 1999 to January 2006, 26 patients underwent insertion of a peritoneovenous shunt for ascites by interventional radiologists. We have used ultrasound and shuntography to assist in the diagnosis of the cause of shunt blockage. PURPOSE: A French multicenter registry was set up to confirm the safety and efficacy of large calibrated tris-acryl gelatin microspheres for embolization of symptomatic fibroids.

Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is an effective, safe, nonsurgical treatment for uterine myomas. Although menstrual irregularities and transient amenorrhea have occurred after UAE, these reports did not provide proper hormonal documentation of ovarian failure. Our patient experienced elevated follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels and vasomotor symptoms (hot flushes) within 4 weeks after the procedure. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature of ovarian failure after UAE confirmed by comparing preprocedure FSH levels with postprocedure levels over 12 months.
