Worldwide, predictive testing for Huntington's disease has become an accepted clinical application that has allowed many individuals from HD-families to proceed with their life without the uncertainty of being at risk. International guidelines have extensively contributed to establishing counselling programmes of high quality, and have served as a model for other genetic disorders. Psychological follow-up studies have increased the insight into the far-reaching impact of test results for all individuals involved. Although the guidelines have served as a useful frame of reference, clinical expe

Huntington's disease is an inherited disorder of the CNS that results in progressive deterioration of mobility and cognition and also affects behaviour. There are no disease-modifying interventions available to date, although there has been considerable progress in research directed at understanding the pathological basis of the disease with a view to identifying potential treatments. It is however important not to overlook currently available treatment strategies, including rehabilitation approaches. There has been little work to date to explore the potential of such approaches and here we hi

Huntington's disease is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder with wide-ranging effects on affected individuals and their families. Until a cure is found for the disease, patients and their families will continue to need care over years, even generations. The ideal care for HD is provided by a team, led by a physician, with input from rehabilitation therapists, nurses, psychologists, genetic counselors, social workers, and other health care providers. The goals of care are to maximize the quality of life at all points through the course of the disease, in part by anticipating problem

Huntington's disease (HD) is a relentlessly progressive neurodegenerative disease, which is presently incurable. Despite the hope for future therapies that exists for the families, they meantime are aware that there is little that their clinicians can do to delay either onset or progression of the disease. There are unique issues to address in a disorder where patients are aware in advance that their ability to communicate, as well as their cognitive capacity, will become impaired. Most affected individuals have experience of the disease in its late stages because of their parent's and other f

Hypertriglyceridemia is a commonly encountered lipid abnormality frequently associated with other lipid and metabolic derangements. The National Cholesterol Education Program recommends obtaining a fasting lipid panel in adults over the age of 20. The discovery of hypertriglyceridemia should prompt an investigation for secondary causes such as high fat diet, excessive alcohol intake, certain medications, and medical conditions (eg, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism). In addition, patients should be evaluated for other components of the metabolic syndrome. These include abdominal obesity, insul

Parkinsonism or dystonia are associated with myoclonus in several extrapyramidal diseases. Although the latter symptom is not always prominent, stimulus-sensitive, distal, or focal reflex myoclonus is frequently observed. This review will consider the clinical and electrophysiological features of myoclonus in Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy, corticobasal degeneration, progressive supranuclear palsy, Huntington's disease, dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy, Lewy body dementia, and myoclonus with dystonia. The evidence of a long-latency reflex response, the presence of giant somat

Antidepressants that inhibit the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) are particularly effective in the treatment of panic disorder. Evidence suggests that increased 5-HT availability is important for the anti-panic effect of serotonergic drugs and in maintaining the response to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Tianeptine is an antidepressant with 5-HT reuptake enhancing properties (i.e. the opposite pharmacological profile to that of SSRIs). Therefore, no effect would be expected in panic disorder. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of tianeptine with that of parox

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a prevalent malignancy worldwide, with a growing number of survivors requiring post-treatment surveillance to improve outcomes. Radiologic surveillance, particularly mammography, is essential for early detection, however, there are disparities in the accuracy and effectiveness of various imaging modalities.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the effectiveness of radiology surveillance techniques for breast cancer survivors, focusing on diagnostic accuracy and mortality reduction.
METHODS: Studies assessing radiologic su

Cdk5 is an atypical cyclin-dependent kinase localized in the brain, and its activity is dependent upon binding to p35/p39. In addition, while cdk5 has important physiological functions related to brain development, the breakdown of cdk5/p35 into cdk5/p25 increases its kinase activity and neurotoxicity. Interestingly, in recent years increased cdk5/p25 expression has been demonstrated in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Experimental studies performed in neuronal cell cultures indicate that cdk5/p25 plays a prominent role in apoptosis. Moreover, an apoptotic path

Eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (eCRSwNP) and non-eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (neCRSwNP) are two distinct endotypes of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). The aim of the study was to find the prevalence of eCRSwNP and neCRSwNP, their clinical comparison and to establish predictive values for clinical and diagnostic factors to differentiate between eCRSwNP and neCRSwNP in Indian population with CRSwNP. This study was a prospective cohort, multi- institutional study. A total of 162 patients who were diagnosed with nasal polyps at dif

We wanted to describe the hematologic manifestations of celiac disease (CD) in childhood. This study included 22 children with CD in whom the disease remained undiagnosed until they had presented with hematological abnormalities, such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia or prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT). Anemia was present alone in 19 (86.3%) patients, and leukopenia coexisted with anemia in 2 (9%) patients. Thrombocytopenia was found alone in 1 (4.5%) patient. Twelve patients had an iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency coexisted with zi

BACKGROUND: Nocturnal airway narrowing is a common characteristic of asthma that remains poorly understood. Sleep itself or rapid eye movement (REM) sleep has been suspected to play a role in the etiology of nocturnal asthma; however, only inconsistent findings have so far been produced. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of sleep deprivation, particularly REM sleep, using the classical platform (flowerpot) method on asthmatic responses in a rat model of asthma, in a situation of immobilization stress.
METHODS: After the rats had been randomly divided into three groups of 9 i

BACKGROUND: Retinal vessel caliber is strongly associated with systemic blood pressure (BP); however, the causal relationship between retinal vascular caliber and BP remains unclear. Understanding this relationship is essential for advancing predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM) approaches to effectively manage hypertension and its related complications.
WORKING HYPOTHESIS: Microvessel morphology is causally related to blood pressure. By integrating genome-wide association studies, Mendelian randomization analysis, transcriptomic data, and multivariate genomic approaches, t

PURPOSE: The retinoblastoma gene (RB1) is a tumor suppressor gene that was first discovered in a rare ocular pediatric tumor called retinoblastoma (RB). The RB1 gene is essential for normal progression through the cell cycle and exerts part of its function through the family of transcription factors (E2F) and many other intermediaries. In the absence of normal RB1, genomic instability and chromosomal aberrations accumulate, leading to tumor initiation, progression, and ultimately metastasis. The purpose of this report was to identify the molecular pathways that are deregulated in retinoblastom

Recent work on Huntington disease (HD) suggests that somatic instability of CAG repeat tracts, which can expand into the hundreds in neurons, explains clinical outcomes better than the length of the inherited allele. Here, we measured somatic expansion in blood samples collected from the same 50 HD mutation carriers over a twenty-year period, along with post-mortem tissue from 15 adults and 7 fetal mutation carriers, to examine somatic expansions at different stages of life. Post-mortem brains, as previously reported, had the greatest expansions, but fetal cortex had virtually none. Somatic in

UNLABELLED: BACKGROU nd and objective: Behçet's disease (BD) is a polysymptomatic condition characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulceration and uveitis. Aphthous stomatitis, a common complication, is painful, recurrent and sometimes resistant to treatment. Topical or intralesional corticosteroids and local anaesthetics are used for palliative therapy. We investigated whether irsogladine, a drug for the treatment of gastritis and peptic ulcers, reduced aphthous stomatitis lesions in patients with BD.
METHODS: Irsogladine 2-4 mg/day was administered orally to ten BD patients (cases 1-10)
