Construction and reconstruction of memories.

1. Recent evidence suggests that treatments given after training may influence memory in two ways: by becoming themselves incorporated to the experience, or by altering post-training mechanisms involved in the storage of the experience. The two processes may be called consolidation. 2. Some endogenous substances that are normally released during or after training (brain beta-endorphin; the peripheral stress hormones, ACTH, epinephrine and vasopressin) appear to be of particular importance. Their effect may become incorporated to the experiences as a conditioned stimulus (CS), generating state

Amnesic syndrome: a lesion-specific disorder?

This paper reviews various lines of evidence which suggest that organic amnesia stemming from lesions of the temporal lobe region produce an amnesia that is qualitatively different from that produced by diencephalic lesions. Differences between these two classes of amnesia were found within five dimensions of performance; (a) insight, concern and confabulation, (b) retrograde amnesia, (c) forgetting rate, (d) frontal lobe symptoms, (e) sensitivity to interference in short term memory. The range of differences found suggest that temporal lobe and diencephalic amnesics should not be considered a

Residual learning capability in organic amnesia.

This article provides a review of residual learning capability in patients suffering from the organic amnesic syndrome. It is shown that organic amnesics are able to learn a considerable number of laboratory tasks, many to a level comparable with normals. It shown that the tasks on which they succeed invariably involve testing situations which do not refer to specific preceding events (e.g. pursuit rotor, maze learning, picture completion, conditioning). It is concluded that this pattern of preserved learning capability can be interpreted as an impairment of episodic storage with the relative

Memory in split-brain patients: a comparison with organic amnesic syndromes.

Acquisition of pictorial information and its retention over a one week retention interval were examined in 3 split-brain patients using the titration procedure developed by Huppert and Piercy (1978, 1979). Split-brain patients were found to have a normal ability to retain information once learnt. However, two of the patients required longer than normal presentation rates to reach the desired level of learning, suggesting the presence of an acquisition defect. In contrast, the youngest patient (L.B.) showed normal acquisition as well as normal retention. These findings are compared with those o

Infantile autism and the temporal lobe of the brain.

Studies are reviewed that support the hypothesis that infantile autism results from a neuropathology of the temporal lobes of the brain. First, there are parallels between symptoms noted in autism and those found in the Kluver-Bucy and amnesic syndromes. Second, there is a similarity between developmental dysphasia and autism. Third, the formation of cross-modal associations may be deficient in autistic children, a symptom resembling aspects of Geschwind's disconnection syndromes. Finally, a large number of organic factors have been associated with the development of autism, some of these havi

A study of confabulation.

Confabulation consequent to organic amnesia is a well-described clinical finding. A number of plausible theories of confabulation have been proposed, but the various claims and counterclaims have not been systematically tested. A standardized test battery that included four different kinds of questions plus measures of suggestibility and the tendency to utilize external cues was administered to ten amnesic patients who demonstrated varying degrees of confabulation. One additional patient, whose clinical condition changed dramatically during his hospital course, received the battery on a number

[Transient global amnesia - a paroxysmal amnestic syndrome (author's transl)].

The Syndrome of Transient Global Amnesia is clinically characterized by a disorder of the ability to form memory engrams, appearing suddenly and lasting for several hours. Since the first papers on this syndrome by Bender (1956) and Fisher and Adams (1964) approximately one hundred cases of transient global amnesia have been described. Symptomatology, course, somatic findings and differential diagnosis are discussed with consideration of the literatur and three own observations. Regarding the etiology most authors discuss a transitory localized ischemia in the circulatory area of the vertebral
