Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is often used in clinical practice as an adjunct to other treatments. However, it is still unclear how the combination of different methods affects the overall effectiveness of therapy and how effective tES is compared to other therapeutic approaches. A search and systematic review of studies according to the PRISMA criteria were conducted in the PubMed database up to April 4, 2025. At the primary search stage, the following articles were included: articles on the treatment of mental disorders using various types of tES as part of combination therapy o

BACKGROUND: As the global population continues to age, the prevalence of geriatric conditions, including dementia and frailty, is also increasing. Early identification of individuals at an elevated risk of these conditions, such as those presenting with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or prefrailty, can provide a critical window for prompt intervention aimed at preventing or reversing disease progression. To promote such early identification, there is a burgeoning interest in the use of digital sensor technology and predictive modeling.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to use a continuous, home-ba

Plasma proteomics and metabolomics snapshots reveal a molecular signature in circulation delineating pathophysiology of major and minor neurocognitive disorder. To identify new cues to disease aetiology and diagnostic approach, we applied plasma proteomics and metabolomics profiling platforms to samples collected in a population-based study of the Singapore Longitudinal Ageing Studies Wave 2 (SLAS-2). In this longitudinal study, blood samples were analysed with standard clinical chemistry, plasma proteomics (Sengenics) and metabolomics (Nightingale) panels. Participants were followed up for th

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether prefrontal cortex activation measured by functional near‑infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during the St. Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) exam differs by cognitive status and whether relative neural efficiency (RNE) can serve as a physiological marker of cognitive impairment.
METHODS: This exploratory study was conducted in 2024 at a senior center in a small Mid‑Atlantic U.S. city. Thirteen community‑dwelling adults aged 65-85 years completed the SLUMS while wearing an fNIRS sensor positioned over the prefrontal cortex. Participants were classified as having n

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to examine the patterns and predictors of health service use for people with dementia who self-harmed.
METHODS: Using a retrospective linked cohort of people who accessed health services in New South Wales, Australia between 2001 and 2015, we identified 154,811 people with dementia or mild cognitive disorder (the dementia cohort), 28,972 people who self-harmed (the self-harm cohort), and 1541 who had a record of both dementia or mild cognitive disorder and self-harm (the dementia and self-harm subgroup). We examined the rates of health service use (inpatient hos

The prevalence of dementia and mild cognitive disorder has markedly risen in recent years. Alzheimer's disease (AD) stands out as the most common form of neurodegenerative dementia among the elderly, featuring progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. Although the exact biological causes of AD are complex and multifactorial, genetics is considered a prominent contributor. To date, around 80 genetic loci have been identified, primarily in European ancestry groups, though a considerable portion of AD's genetic architecture remains elusive. Recognizing the impending rise in AD cases, both go

Background/Objectives: Mild neurocognitive disorder (mNCD) is a state of vulnerability, in which individuals exhibit cognitive deficits identified by cognitive testing, which do not interfere with their ability to independently perform in daily activities. New touchscreen tools had to be designed for cognitive assessment and had to be at an advanced stage of development but their clinical relevance is still unclear. We aimed to identify digital tools used in the diagnosis of mNCD and assess the diagnostic performance of these tools. Methods: In a systematic review, we searched 4 databases for

Autosomal dominant spastic paraplegia type 4 (SPG4, SPAST gene) is commonly described as a pure phenotype, with progressive spastic weakness of the lower limbs. Some cognitive disorders have been reported but remain difficult to characterize. Brain flurodesoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET is a sensitive biomarker of glycolytic metabolism and shows loss of neuronal activity. Our objective was to describe the cognitive impairment of SPG4 patients, supported by brain 18F-FDG PET, to characterize the cognitive pattern and its localization. Twenty subjects from the Grand Est region, with a pathogenic varia

INTRODUCTION: With the rapid increase in the population over 65 years old, research on healthy aging has become one of the priorities in the research community, looking for a cost-effective method to prevent or delay symptoms of mild cognitive disorder or dementia. Studies indicate that cognitive reserve theory could be beneficial in this regard. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential relationship between lifestyle socio-behavioral proxies of cognitive reserve and cortical regions in adults with no subjective cognitive decline.
METHODS: Overall, 58 participants, aged 65-85 yea

This study re-examined the Memory Assessment Scale (MAS), a brief memory test developed in Hawai'i in 1987, to assess whether it remains a valid and reliable cognitive impairment screening tool in Hawai'i. Patients suspected of having neurocognitive dysfunction were divided into 2 groups (those with and without mild cognitive impairment) based on their results on a battery of neuropsychological tests. No differences in MAS scores were found between patients with and without mild cognitive impairment. Further research with the MAS comparing patients with mild cognitive disorder to healthy contr

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity is known to positively influence cognitive performance. For adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the relationship between physical activity levels and cognitive performance is unknown. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine if cognitive performance [as measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)] of people living in the community with MCI is associated with their physical activity levels or sedentary behaviour.
METHODS: ActivPAL™ accelerometers were used to objectively measure physical activity and sedentary behaviour for seven full days

Infection by pathogenic microbes is widely hypothesized to be a risk factor for the development of neurocognitive disorders and dementia, but evidence remains limited. We analyzed the association of seropositivity to 11 common pathogens and cumulative infection burden with neurocognitive disorder (mild cognitive impairment and dementia) in a population-based cohort of 475 older individuals (mean age = 67.6 y) followed up over 3-5 years for the risk of MCI-dementia. Specific seropositivities showed a preponderance of positive trends of association with MCI-dementia, including for Plasmodium, H.

Successful development of novel therapies requires that clinical trials are conducted in patient cohorts with the highest benefit-to-risk ratio. Population-based biobanks with comprehensive health and genetic data from large numbers of individuals hold promise to facilitate identification of trial participants, particularly when interventions need to start while symptoms are still mild, such as for Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study describes a process for clinical recall studies from FinnGen. We demonstrate the feasibility to systematically ascertain customized clinical data from FinnGen pa
