BACKGROUND: Natriuretic peptides have been linked to cognitive disorder in previous studies. The aim of this study was to examine the association between the severity of cognitive disorder and the levels of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) in an older general population.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study is a part of the larger population-based, multidisciplinary Kuopio 75+ health study. A total of 601 subjects aged 75 or older participated in the study. A subgroup of 126 individuals was diagnosed with cognitive disorder, and the severity of the disease was assessed. The participants were test

With an increased general practitioner and public awareness, patients are being referred on to Memory Clinics earlier and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is often a conclusion of the assessment. The function of memory clinics is to facilitate early and accurate diagnosis of dementia and its management. Mild Cognitive Impairment is an organic condition which in significant proportion of cases, progresses to Dementia. In Bedfordshire and Luton, patients with MCI are followed up at nine months to yearly intervals and detailed neuropsychological assessments are carried out to monitor cognitive fun

Animal epidemiological and clinical studies suggest that cholesterol is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Nevertheless, the relation of cholesterol to mild cognitive impairment (MCI), influence of APOE genotype and its changes in lifespan is controversial. We investigated the potential impact of plasma total cholesterol (TC) on development of MCI and AD in the interdisciplinary longitudinal study on adult development and aging, a representative birth cohort (born 1930-1932), examined in 1993/1994 (VT1), 1997/1998 (VT2), and 2005/2007 (VT3). Of 500 participants at baseline, 381 surviv

The DSM-5 introduces major modifications in the category of mental disorders due to brain lesions compared to the previous DSM versions, which are reviewed in this paper. The description of the category Major neurocognitive disorder, as a substitute for dementia, seems to fit better for patients and families, and more adapted to many neurodegenerative cognitive disorders for which memory impairment is not predominant. Similarly, the introduction of the category of Mild neurocognitive disorder appears to be an improvement although some difficulty still remains for distinguishing mild cognitive

A case is presented of a 59-year-old male patient with a 5-year history of sarcoidosis. In the last half a year, deterioration of his intellectual abilities was noticed. Psychological testing detected a mild cognitive disorder. Laboratory diagnostics found a decreased level of testosterone and magnetic resonance imaging showed pituitary stalk neurosarcoidosis without any other pathomorphological substrate of cognitive impairment. This case indicates that neurosarcoidosis should be considered as a possible cause of mild cognitive disorder and, consequently, included in the International Classif

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Defining how brain structures differ in pre-clinical dementia is important to better understand the pathological processes involved and to inform clinical practice. The aim of this study was to identify significant brain correlates (volume and asymmetry in volume) of mild cognitive disorders when compared to normal controls in a large community-based sample of young-old individuals who were assessed for cognitive impairment.
METHODS: Cortical and sub-cortical volumes were measured using a semi-automated method in 398 participants aged 64-70 years who were selected from

INTRODUCTION: In Parkinson's disease there are patients with isolated and multiple cognitive impairment, and their cognitive performance ranges from normal to an advanced degree of dementia. Most patients present an executive deficit, either in isolation or combined with other cognitive disorders, which is considered to be the most characteristic aspect of the disease, and 30-40% of those affected will end up with a clinically-defined dementia.
DEVELOPMENT: The presence of a mild cognitive disorder in patients with Parkinson means that the risk of dementia appearing at some time during the de

The most frequent neuropsychiatric complication of the human immunodefienciency virus infection is cognitive impairment, wich may range in severity from a mild cognitive disorder to a severe dementing illness. HIV-associated dementia is known to be a poor indicator in patients with HIV. Caring for a person who develops cognitive impairment or even stable dementia is exhausting emotionally, psysically and financially. The most important difference between HIV-associated dementia and HIV associated minor cognitive disorder is the severity of impairment in activities of daily living. The purpose

BACKGROUND: While the evidence of an association between the apolipoprotein E (APOE) *E4 allele and Alzheimer's disease is very strong, the effect of the *E4 allele on cognitive decline in the general population is more equivocal. A cross-sectional study on the lifespan effects of the *E4 allele 1 failed to find any effect of the *E4 allele on cognitive performance at ages 20-24, 40-44 or 60-64 years.
METHODS: In this four year follow-up study, we reexamine the effect of *E4 in the sample of 2,021 individuals, now aged 65-69 years.
RESULTS: Performance on the Mini-Mental State Examination (M
