A 15-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was referred because of a chronic history of swelling over the right eye that had progressed to an open, exudative wound. The lesion had not responded to prolonged antimicrobial treatments that were chosen based on superficial culture results. Before this development, the cat had been diagnosed with International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) stage 2 chronic kidney disease with no other significant health issues. Computed tomography revealed fluid to soft-tissue attenuating material in the sinonasal cavities and concurrent bony lysis. Cytology

Drug-resistant Nocardia infections have become an increasingly intractable clinical challenge globally, with the incidence rising steadily among both immunocompromised and immunocompetent populations in recent decades. The clinical management of drug-resistant Nocardia infections is hindered by distinct regional variations in species distribution, complex molecular resistance mechanisms, and sophisticated species-specific immune escape strategies, all of which contribute to frequent treatment failure and poor patient outcomes. In this review, we synthesize the latest research progress on drug-

Nocardia species are infrequently associated with ocular conditions, such as keratitis, dacryocystitis, endophthalmitis, and orbital cellulitis, particularly related to ocular trauma involving vegetative matter. Their incidence in acute-onset post-operative endophthalmitis is rarely documented. We discuss a 65-year-old diabetic female patient who presented with acute-onset vision loss, with corneal perforation and panophthalmitis two weeks following cataract surgery. Evisceration had to be performed. The culture of ocular contents revealed the presence of Nocardia otitidiscaviarum, identified

A 77-year-old man was treated for Nocardia abscessus brain abscess with high-dose trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) and ceftriaxone (CTRX). During the treatment, he developed consciousness disturbance and negative myoclonus (NM) in all four limbs. Initially, we suspected CTRX-induced neurotoxicity because the clinical phenotype, characterized by NM, strongly resembled cephalosporin encephalopathy. However, we considered CTRX unlikely to be the cause because the patient's renal function was preserved, and NM appeared during the period when CTRX was withheld. Consequently, we suspected TMP

Nocardia species are obligate aerobic actinomycetes. Human nocardiosis typically occurs in immunocompromised hosts and most commonly manifests as primary suppurative pulmonary infection. Hematogenous dissemination can lead to extrapulmonary involvement, with the central nervous system being the most frequent secondary site, followed by skin and subcutaneous soft tissues; pericardium, lymph nodes, and joints are affected only rarely. A 50-year-old HIV-positive man was admitted with a 1-month history of oral blood blisters and ecchymoses of the extremities. A right forehead abscess that develope

BACKGROUND: Nocardia frequently disseminates to the central nervous system (CNS). Few studies have described brain imaging characteristics of these infections or compared findings of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adults diagnosed with CNS nocardiosis between November 2011 and April 2022 and underwent brain MRI. We aimed to describe common brain imaging characteristics, compare the diagnostic yield of brain CT and MRI, and describe clinical outcomes.
RESULTS: 52 patients were diagnosed with CNS nocardiosis,

We report a case of lymphocutaneous nocardiosis in a 73-year-old male lung transplant recipient after traumatic soil exposure abroad. The patient traveled from Portugal to Brazil to undergo lung transplantation and, 3 months later, while receiving immunosuppressive therapy (with prednisolone, mycophenolate mofetil, and tacrolimus), sustained a nasal laceration after a fall onto soil-contaminated ground in Brazil. A persistent ulcerated facial lesion subsequently developed and was initially misdiagnosed as sporotrichosis, leading to treatment with itraconazole. Despite partial improvement, the

Nocardia infection should be considered in immunocompromised patients presenting with concurrent pulmonary and neurological symptoms. Species identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing are crucial. Co-trimoxazole is the first-line treatment. It is important to educate renal transplant recipients that outdoor or agricultural activities require protective precautions to prevent opportunistic infections.

Implantation mycoses (IM) are a group of fungal diseases which occur after a transcutaneous trauma. The World Health Organization has listed some of the IM, namely sporotrichosis, chromoblastomycosis and eumycetoma as one of the Skin Neglected Tropical Diseases targeted for control by 2030. There are no robust data on IM from Nepal since these diseases are not a part of routine disease surveillance. In this study, an online and in-person survey was conducted using a standard set of questionnaires among the registered dermatologists of Nepal. For this survey sporotrichosis, chromoblastomycosis

BACKGROUND: Nocardia brevicatena (N. brevicatena) is an uncommon cause of brain infections, frequently mistaken for intracranial tuberculosis, especially in patients with a tuberculosis (TB) history, leading to improper treatment. This case report outlines the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of a patient with multiple brain abscesses from N. brevicatena after laryngeal TB, highlighting the importance of next-generation sequencing (NGS) for accurate diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report details a 55-year-old man with a history of TB. Symptoms included dizziness, headache, and unsteady g

This study examined the effects of sodium butyrate (SB) on growth, intestinal health and immunity of big-belly seahorses (Hippocampus abdominalis) suffering frozen diet-induced enteritis and stress. Total 750 seahorses were randomly assigned to five groups in triplicate, and were fed frozen mysids mixed with SB at 0, 1.25, 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/L (based on culture water volume) for 8 weeks, followed by an Edwardsiella tarda challenge. Results demonstrated that the SB1.25 group had a significantly higher specific growth rate, hepatic T-SOD and CAT activities, and lower MDA content than the SB0 group

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) relieves pain and restores function in severe hip arthritis and other painful hip disorders. THA is successful; however, it involves significant perioperative blood loss, which can lead to complications and economic burden. Tranexamic acid (TXA) reduces blood loss. However, its impact on hidden blood loss (HBL) is uncertain. The hemostatic effect of TXA may be enhanced by carbazochrome sodium sulphate (CSS). This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of combined CSS and TXA in reducing blood loss in THA.
METHODS: This systematic review and me

Background Mycetoma is a chronic, progressively destructive infection that can result in severe disability and limb loss. In Ethiopia, diagnostic capacity and access to effective treatment remain limited, and the burden of mycetoma is poorly characterized. Recent clinical observations from the Afar Region suggest a high frequency of advanced disease and amputation, yet systematic evidence on the burden is lacking. This study aimed to describe the clinical burden of mycetoma, diagnostic and treatment practices, care-seeking patterns, and the extent of limb amputation at Dubti General Hospital i

Nocardiosis is an uncommon infection that can cause severe damage or be life-threatening. However, the epidemiology and strain distribution of nocardiosis in China remain poorly characterized. In this study, a comprehensive literature search was conducted using the keyword "('Nocardia' OR 'Nocardiosis') AND ('China' OR 'Chinese')" in PubMed and Web of Science, and "(Nuokajun) OR (Nukajun)" in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database. All published cases of nocardiosis between April 1, 1990, and September 13, 2024, were included. Geographic analysis identified a concentration

Bacterial diseases have a significant impact on the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) industry in Mexico. Understanding the mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions enables the design of effective control and diagnostic strategies to reduce losses during cultivation. This work aimed to analyze the transcriptome of Nile tilapia infected with emerging bacterial pathogens. Three experimental groups were established: two infected with Nocardia asteroides or Providencia vermicola, and a healthy control (non-infected group). Results showed that both infections caused mortality and signs of diseas

BACKGROUND: Concurrent opportunistic infections are rare but can lead to life-threatening complications in patients with hematologic disorders. Immunosuppression, particularly severe neutropenia, significantly increases the risk of invasive fungal and bacterial infections. We report a 34-year-old female with chronic hepatitis B initially presented with pancytopenia. Subsequent bone marrow evaluation revealed aplastic anemia, and she subsequently received immunosuppressive therapy. During hospitalization, she developed multiple infectious episodes, including fever, pulmonary nodular lesions, an

Autoantibodies against granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) are the cause of autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (aPAP). They are also found in the serum/plasma of previously immunocompetent patients with disseminated Cryptococcus spp. infection (typically spp. gattii) and disseminated Nocardia spp. infection. Detection of this autoantibody is generally performed through an antibody binding assay, followed by a live-cell-based pSTAT5 neutralization to confirm functional significance of detected autoantibodies. The requirement for a live-cell-based assay increases the

The Neglected Tropical Disease mycetoma is a chronic, progressive infectious disease characterized by large tumor-like masses in subcutaneous tissues. It is endemic in rural areas of low- and middle-income countries, where it can lead to extensive health and socioeconomic burdens for the patient and their family. It is especially prevalent among male farmers. The disease can be caused by both bacteria and fungi, referred to as actinomycetoma and eumycetoma, respectively. Inoculation occurs when a skin breach allows the pathogen to enter the subcutaneous tissue. The pathogen can form grains, wh
