Cat scratch disease (CSD) is a worldwide preventable zoonotic disease caused by a Gram-negative bacteria, Bartonella henselae (B. henselae). A retrospective study was performed to determine the seroprevalence of B. henselae and to identify its associated factors among cat scratch disease suspected patients in Malaysia from 2015-2019. A total of 3525 serum samples from Malaysian government and private hospitals were tested using an indirect immunofluorescence antibody (IFA) test kit. The IgM seropositivity of B. henselae was 41.8% and this rate showed an increasing trend each year. Among the st

Bartonella henselae is a gram-negative pleomorphic fastidious bacillus that predominantly affects the pediatric population. Its best-known clinical manifestation is cat scratch disease (CSD), which is initiated by inoculation of the bacterium through feline saliva, its main reservoir. The clinical spectrum of Bartonella henselae infections is broad; fever with lymphadenopathy is the most frequent presentation, usually self-limited. Despite the availability of specific serological tests, a delay in diagnosis is common, especially in cases with unusual manifestations. This paper aims to describe

Currently, at least 22 species of Bartonella are known to cause diseases in humans, with Bartonella henselae being the main one. Among the clinical manifestations associated with bartonellosis, cutaneous vasculitis is rare, but it can be severe. We report the case of a 9-year-old child who presented with cervical lymphadenopathy, arthritis, epididymitis, and cutaneous vasculitis as clinical manifestations of systemic bartonellosis, with positive detection of B. henselae in blood and skin fragment using species-specific conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. Vasculitis caused

Cat scratch disease is a bacterial infection due to Bartonella henselae. The microbial agent is most frequently transmitted to humans through a scratch or bite of an infected cat. Ocular involvement occurs in approximately 6% of human infections. We report the case of a healthy 27-year old patient presenting with unilateral scotoma. Multimodal imaging revealed an isolated cotton wool spot (CWS) with no other inflammatory signs on ophthalmological examination. Medical history was unremarkable, although the patient reported living with a cat. Biological and cardiovascular evaluations were normal

Bartonella henselae is a significant zoonotic agent, with domestic cats serving as primary reservoirs. This study investigated the occurrence and genetic diversity of B. henselae in domestic cats from central-western Brazil, including both animals from veterinary clinics and cat blood donors. Serological, microbiological, and molecular techniques were employed. Serum samples were tested using the Indirect Fluorescence Antibody Test (IFAT) to detect anti-B. henselae IgG antibodies. Molecular detection of Bartonella spp. was performed using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) targeting the 16-23S

We describe the first documented case of acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia (AFOP) induced by cat-scratch disease (CSD). A 74-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital with progressive dyspnea and dry cough for more than 1 month that did not respond to conventional antibiotic therapy. Physical examination revealed cat bite scars on the left index finger. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed bilateral diffuse ground-glass opacities and consolidation. Percutaneous lung biopsy pathology confirmed the characteristic changes of AFOP, including fibrin 'ball 'formation in the alve

Zoonotic infections-bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic-can spread from domestic or wild animals to humans, either directly or via intermediate vectors. In vascular and endovascular surgery, infections are rare and usually caused by common bacteria with familiar presentations. In contrast, zoonotically transmitted, atypically behaving organisms pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to their elusive nature and resistance to conventional detection methods. We present two rare cases of aortic endograft infections caused by Coxiella burnetii and Bartonella henselae. This case series hi

Bartonella henselae, the causative agent of cat scratch disease (CSD), and Mycobacterium tuberculosis are two distinct pathogens that may affect the same patient, particularly in areas where both are common and risk factors overlap. We report the case of a 12-year-old Hispanic boy from South Texas, living near the USA-Mexico border, who presented with cervical swelling and mild periorbital edema for more than two weeks. Outpatient evaluation identified recent kitten exposure and positive Bartonella henselae IgM titers, leading to a diagnosis of CSD. Clindamycin was prescribed due to a document

Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome is an uncommon manifestation of Bartonella henselae infection presenting with granulomatous conjunctivitis, marked preauricular lymphadenopathy, and occasional necrotizing lesions. The most common cause of Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome is due to direct contact with contaminated cat saliva or scratches near the eye. While Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome has been linked to cat scratch disease, it has not been associated with necrotizing soft tissue infections due to a distinct bacterial process, such as necrotizing fasciitis due to Group A Streptococcus

Bartonella henselae is a fastidious, facultative intracellular, Gram-negative bacterium that causes Cat Scratch Disease (CSD), a zoonosis in which domestic cats are the primary reservoir and humans as incidental hosts. While CSD is often self-limiting, it can lead to severe systemic complications, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Diagnosing Ba. henselae infection remains challenging, as conventional methods - including culture, Enzyme -Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Indirect Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) - suffer from low sensitivity, cro

BACKGROUND Hepatosplenic cat scratch disease, a form of atypical cat scratch disease, is rare in immunocompetent adults, and presentations can mimic those of potentially lethal diseases. Nonetheless, diagnosis can be challenging due to underrecognition of the disease, as well as variability in the sensitivity of diagnostic testing. CASE REPORT A 39-year-old woman with no major medical history presented to the Emergency Department with right lower quadrant abdominal pain. Vital signs were stable, and laboratory findings were nonsignificant. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) with contrast was n

Bartonella species are known as candidates for zoonotic transmission, and cats serve as the main reservoir for Bartonella henselae, the primary causative agent of cat scratch disease (CSD). However, research on the transmission of bartonellosis to humans remains very limited. In East Asia, there is a lack of comprehensive studies regarding the prevalence of B. henselae infection and its associated risk factors among companion cats, their owners, and individuals working in veterinary professions. This study aimed to investigate both the molecular and seroprevalence of B. henselae in veterinary

Serology remains the first-line diagnostic method for Bartonella henselae infection. Indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) is considered the reference serological assay to detect anti-B. henselae antibodies. However, IFA has the drawbacks associated with manual techniques. Thus, the automated VirClia® Lotus analyser (VLA) was presented as an easy-to-use solution for B. henselae serology. The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical and analytical performance of the VLA in comparison with a commercial IFA on a population that was representative of the various forms of bartonellosis. This

Acute lymphadenopathy has a wide range of possible etiologies, ranging from self-limiting viral infections to life-threatening malignancy. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) can play a crucial role in identifying lymphadenopathy and ruling out other potential causes of soft tissue swelling, such as hernias, abscesses, and malignancies. Furthermore, POCUS enables the characterization of lymphadenopathy by evaluating the size, shape, echogenicity, and vascularity of the involved lymph nodes, thereby helping to identify the presence and extent of pathology. When performed at the time of initial pre

Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of cat scratch disease (CSD), a zoonotic illness primarily transmitted to humans through scratches or bites from cats and, less commonly, by cat fleas or lice. While the most common presentation is self-limited regional lymphadenopathy in immunocompetent individuals, in immunocompromised patients, such as organ transplant recipients, it can cause systemic infections. This report describes a case of disseminated B. henselae infection in a 66-year-old man with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma following conditioning chemotherapy and autologous stem c

BACKGROUND: Cat-scratch disease (CSD) and infectious mononucleosis (IM) are prevalent infections in children and adolescents. However, the concurrent occurence of these two diseases remains a rare clinical entity. We reported a 13-year-old male who presented with unilateral inguinal lymphadenopathy and fever, and had a history of cat scratch. Based on histopathological findings, special stains, and immunohistochemical analysis, the patient was diagnosed with both CSD and IM.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old male presented with a palpable mass on the left thigh and fever. Radiological findings

Cat scratch disease (CSD) is a common zoonotic infection caused by Bartonella henselae (B. henselae) and typically presents with fever and regional lymphadenopathy. However, skeletal involvement, including osteomyelitis and arthritis, is rare. We report a 28-year-old immunocompetent female who presented with a five‑month history of persistent right knee swelling without fever or lymphadenopathy. She had previously undergone distal femoral tumor resection with prosthetic joint replacement, and this episode of chronic knee swelling together with the imaging findings was highly suggestive of pros
