Discordant ANCA Positivity in Immune Complex Glomerulonephritis Secondary to Bartonella henselae Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis.

Bartonella henselae is an intracellular bacterium which classically causes cat scratch disease as well as culture-negative endocarditis. We report a man in his 60s, with a mechanical aortic valve replacement who presented with a 6-month fever of unknown origin (FUO), splenomegaly and acute kidney injury. Investigations showed discordant ANCA serologies, screening anti-MPO positivity followed by confirmatory anti-PR3 positivity, raising concern for ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). However, renal biopsy demonstrated immune complex deposition, inconsistent with the pauci-immune glomerulonephriti

Susceptibility or resistance to Bartonella spp. infection in cats: Does the phenotype-B blood matter?

Blood types can influence host susceptibility to infectious diseases by modifying erythrocyte surface antigens that act as pathogen receptors. In cats, AB blood group system polymorphisms determine the expression of distinct sialic acids, with the N-glycolylneuraminic acid (NeuGc) primarily expressed in type A, the N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc) in type B, and both in type AB erythrocytes. This study investigated whether feline blood type influences susceptibility to Bartonella henselae, the agent of cat-scratch disease. A total of 454 blood and serum samples from stray colony, shelter, and o

Cat-Scratch Disease Associated with Acute Hearing Loss, Israel.

We report 5 patients in Israel with cat-scratch disease (CSD) who had unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Several mechanisms are plausible, but further research is needed to clarify pathogenesis. The cases highlight a previously underrecognized association between CSD and sudden sensorineural hearing loss, expanding the spectrum of cranial nerve neuropathies in CSD.

Rickettsia typhi, Bartonella henselae, and related zoonotic agents in fleas from domestic cats (Felis catus) from the Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

BACKGROUND: Flea-borne rickettsiosis and bartonellosis are emerging diseases in humans and animals. There is increasing concern for the emergence of Rickettsia typhi (agent of murine typhus or flea-borne typhus) in humans of southern USA, for which cats are key reservoirs and cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) serve as the vector. Similarly, multiple species of Bartonella have cats as natural hosts and fleas as vectors, leading to varied disease outcomes in humans, including cat scratch disease and neurobartonellosis. METHODS: To investigate the ecology of Rickettsia and Bartonella pathogens,

Axillary cat-scratch disease: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Cat-scratch disease (CSD) typically presents as self-limited regional lymphadenopathy following a cat scratch or exposure. Its clinical features can mimic malignancy or tuberculosis, especially in elderly patients, leading to potential misdiagnosis. This report underscores the importance of considering CSD in elderly individuals with unexplained fever and atypical lymphadenopathy. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 67-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of left axillary swelling, accompanied by pain and fever for 3 days. DIAGNOSES: Axillary CSD was confirmed based on clinical present

From Kitten's Claw to Vision Flaw: A Case of Pediatric Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Associated With Bartonella henselae Infection.

Central retinal artery occlusion is rare in pediatrics and typically linked to embolic or hematologic disorders. The authors describe a 13-year-old boy with acute central retinal artery occlusion and elevated Bartonella henselae titers following kitten exposure. Extensive evaluation was unrevealing, suggesting a rare inflammatory association between cat scratch disease and pediatric retinal arterial ischemia. The main take-away from this case is to also look for infectious causes, which are rare and not the first to be investigated for during central retinal artery occlusion.

Prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in ixodid ticks collected from domestic animals in southeast Iran.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) pose a significant threat to livestock production in Kerman Province, Iran. Despite the high prevalence of TBPs, our understanding of specific pathogens circulating within local tick populations remains limited. Furthermore, the potential for co-infections with multiple microorganisms complicates the diagnosis and disease management. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of TBPs in ticks collected from domestic animals in Kerman province using real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). METHODS: Tick collection was conducted between April and June 2022

Establishment and application of a multiplex qPCR panel for multi-host surveillance of tick-Borne pathogens.

Tick-borne diseases pose significant public health threats. Non-specific symptoms and co-infections present diagnostic challenges for conventional methods. To address this, we developed the tick-borne pathogen (TBP) Panel, utilizing eight separate multiplex qPCR assays to simultaneously detect 25 TBPs (7 bacteria, 14 viruses, 4 parasites). Optimal Quantification Cycle (Cq) cut-offs were established using nested/semi-nested PCR amplicon sequencing, and digital PCR as reference standards. The Panel was then deployed for screening 2,333 ticks, 59 rodents, and 553 febrile patients. The Panel demon

Unmasking Bartonella henselae: A forgotten cause of hepatosplenic and marrow involvement.

Bartonella henselae is an uncommon but important cause of prolonged pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) and hepatosplenomegaly. Conventional diagnostic tools often fail in disseminated disease, leading to delayed or missed diagnoses. We report a 60-year-old man with PUO, progressive weight loss, and hepatosplenomegaly. Clinical suspicion, guided by significant cat exposure, led to molecular confirmation of B. henselae infection after conventional workup proved inconclusive. Liver biopsy revealed pleomorphic rod-shaped organisms on Warthin-Starry staining, while real-time PCR targeting the rpoB gen

Postmortem evidence of Babesia and Bartonella infections in chronically ill suicidal young people.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases represent an emerging global threat to public health, yet the potential role of flea and tick-borne pathogens as a cause or cofactor in neuropsychiatric illnesses and suicidal ideation remains relatively uninvestigated. Co-infections with vector-borne Babesia and Bartonella spp., as well as infection with more than one Babesia species, may represent a more important cause of neurological and neuropsychiatric illnesses than is currently appreciated. METHODS: Postmortem blood, tissue, and urine samples from six chronically ill youths who ended or wanted to end

Erbin deficiency exacerbates sepsis‑induced liver injury through mitochondrial ROS/NLRP3‑mediated inflammatory responses.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a rare interstitial lung disease with a poor prognosis that currently lacks effective treatment methods. Preventing the acute exacerbation of IPF, identifying the molecular subtypes of patients, providing personalized treatment, and developing individualized drugs are guidelines for predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM / 3PM) to promote the development of IPF. Oxidative stress (OS) is an important pathological process of IPF. However, the relationship between the expression levels of oxidative stress-related genes (OSRGs) an

Prevalence and Predictors of Problematic Feeding at 1, 3, and 6 Months Corrected Age in Preterm Infants Born Prior to 34 Weeks.

Bartonella spp. are small hemotropic bacteria infecting mammals. Four Bartonella species have been recently described in cattle and wild ruminants. To date, the biology and possible pathogenic role of Bartonella species isolated from ruminants are poorly understood. Therefore, a dairy herd of 448 cows and heifers was surveyed in order to establish the prevalence of Bartonella bovis and B. chomelii infections, the level of bacteremia, and the relationship between bacteremia and age or pregnancy status. The putative impact of Bartonella infection on production performance (individual milk cell c

Peliosis hepatis and hepatic fibrosis in a dog infected with multiple Bartonella species.

A 13-y-old, spayed female dog had regenerative anemia, lymphopenia, hypoalbuminemia, and elevated hepatic biochemical parameters. Liver biopsy revealed hepatic peliosis (hepatic sinusoidal angiectasis), frequently associated with perisinusoidal fibrosis. The dog was seroreactive to Bartonella antigens by indirect fluorescent antibody assays, and quantitative PCR from blood identified Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii genotype II. The dog was euthanized 9 mo later because of acute decompensation. Autopsy revealed icteric adipose tissues, end-stage liver, and abdominal effusion. Microscopica

Molecular detection and diversity of Bartonella spp. in non-hematophagous bats from the Peruvian Amazon.

The Bartonella genus comprises a variety of species capable of infecting a wide range of mammals through hematophagous arthropods, such as fleas, ticks, flies, and lice. Domestic (dogs and cats) and wild (rodents and bats) reservoirs harbor species with zoonotic potential. This molecular study identified the diversity of Bartonella spp. in bats from the Peruvian Amazon. Blood samples from 62 bats were molecularly analyzed for the detection of Bartonella spp. by amplification of the 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the citrate synthase (gltA) gene. The ITS region amplificati

Pyogenic Granuloma of the Larynx: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Pyogenic granulomas are benign, painless vascular tumors on the skin and mucosal surfaces. They are commonly found in the head and neck region, although their occurrence in the larynx is rare. The term "lobular capillary hemangioma" is now used to describe the histological appearance of these tumors more accurately. Predisposing factors for pyogenic granuloma of the larynx have been linked to prior traumatic injuries, such as intubation, previous surgeries, or laryngopharyngeal reflux. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old male visited our clinic with complaints of progressive dyspho
