Sand Fly Surveillance for Molecular Identification and Characterization of Leishmania and Bartonella Species in Peru.

Leishmaniasis and Carrion's disease are endemic neglected diseases in Peru. Both diseases are transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies competent for infection with Leishmania species and Bartonella bacilliformis. In Peru, 149 sand fly species have been identified. Knowledge regarding sand fly species diversity and distribution in leishmaniasis and Carrion's disease transmission areas has grown in the past 2 decades through multiple surveillance efforts in endemic regions, including unexplored low and high jungle areas. Furthermore, molecular testing approaches have been implemented to enhance su

A One Health Zoonotic Vector Borne Infectious Disease Family Outbreak Investigation.

This study reinforces the value of a One Health approach to infectious disease outbreak investigations. After the onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms in their son, our investigation focused on a family composed of a mother, father, two daughters, the son, two dogs, and a rabbit, all with exposures to vectors (fleas and ticks), rescued dogs, and other animals. Between 2020 and 2022, all family members experienced illnesses that included neurological symptoms. Prolonged menorrhagia (130d) in the youngest daughter ultimately resolved following antibiotic administration. One dog was diagnosed with

Tick Diversity and Distribution of Pathogen in Ticks Collected from Wild Animals and Vegetation in Africa.

Ticks are important vectors of a wide range of pathogens with significant medical and veterinary importance. Different tick species occupy different habitats with an overall widespread geographical distribution. In addition to their role as reservoirs or vectors, ticks are involved in maintaining pathogens in the environment and among wild and domestic animals. In this study, tick species infesting wild animals, as well as collected from the environment and their pathogens reported in 17 countries in Africa between 2003 and 2023, were collected according to the PRISMA guidelines. Data on ticks

Bartonella tracing in wild rodents in northwestern Mexico.

Bartonella is a widely distributed Gram-negative bacterium that includes species that are capable of causing illness in humans. Rodents represent one of the main reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, and monitoring their populations can provide valuable insights into human health. We conducted a surveillance study of rodents from two north-western states of Mexico (Baja California and Chihuahua) to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of Bartonella by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and sequencing of the citrate synthase (gltA) gene. A total of 586 rodents belonging to 28

Diagnosis of Carrion's disease: A systematic review in South American countries and meta-analysis.

Bartonella bacilliformis can cause a potentially fatal infection, Carrion's disease. This review synthesized data on the prevalence of this bacterial infection in South American countries. A comprehensive literature search relevant articles (published between 2010 and 2022) was conducted in four databases. Full texts were selected based on PECOTS eligibility and JBI methodological quality. The pooled bacterial infection rate was calculated using a random-effects meta-analysis model. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were used to investigate statistical heterogeneity. Five studies (covering

First molecular detection of Bartonella spp. in two chewing louse species (Amblycera: Menoponidae and Ischnocera: Philopteridae) parasitizing Calonectris borealis (Cory, 1881) (Procellariiformes: Procellariidae).

Procellariidae is the most diverse family of the order Procellariiformes, with 13 genera and about 90 species of seabirds. The genus Calonectris is represented by three species in the Atlantic Ocean. Bartonella spp. is a globally distributed bacterium primarily affecting mammals, with transmission through hematophagous arthropod vectors. Recent studies have found Bartonella in non-mammals like birds and turtles, prompting the present study to explore the potential role of chewing lice in its transmission. Here, we report two different Bartonella genotypes in each lice species identified: one s

Molecular detection of Bartonella in bats and their ectoparasites, Spinturnix myoti, from central and Western Yunnan Province, China.

Bartonella, a facultative intracellular pathogen, is known for causing zoonotic diseases and has been detected in a variety of mammals and arthropods. Previous research has highlighted bats as natural reservoirs for Bartonella, with bat ectoparasites acting as vectors for transmission. Moreover, studies have indicated a positive correlation between the prevalence of ectoparasites and Bartonella infection levels. However, research on Bartonella carried by bats and their ectoparasites in China is limited. In this study, we captured bats at three sites in Yunnan Province, China, and collected the

Bartonella henselae, Babesia odocoilei and Babesia divergens-like MO-1 infection in the brain of a child with seizures, mycotoxin exposure and suspected Rasmussen's encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: In conjunction with more sensitive culture and molecular diagnostic testing modalities, simultaneous or sequential infection with more than 1 vector borne zoonotic pathogen is being increasingly documented in human patients. On a frequent basis, many people are exposed to apparently healthy, but infected, domestic and wild animals, the arthropod vectors with which these animals have co-evolved, and the bacterial, protozoal and other pathogens for which various animals are reservoirs. Unsuspected zoonotic transmission by scratch, bite, or vector exposures can result in chronic, indo

Vector-borne pathogens in dogs from the Republic of Kosovo.

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne pathogens (CVBP) are transmitted by arthropod vectors such as ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, and phlebotomine sand flies and are of global veterinary and medical importance. Dogs are important reservoir hosts, which may develop potentially life-threatening clinical signs. The Balkan area harbors diverse vector fauna and associated CVBPs, and data, particularly from the Republic of Kosovo, are scarce. Considering the high number of stray and privately owned dogs primarily kept outside, living in close contact with dogs might promote spillover of zoonotic pathogens to

Triatoma rubrofasciata as a potential vector for bartonellosis.

Bartonella spp. are most often transmitted by arthropod vectors or animal bites and scratches. However, the vector species involved in the transmission of human bartonellosis remain poorly understood. This study investigated the presence of Bartonella in Triatoma rubrofasciata from Guangxi and Hainan provinces in China, evaluating its potential as a vector. Bartonella was identified in T. rubrofasciata samples through PCR amplification and sequencing of the ITS, gltA, and rpoB genes. The survival duration of Bartonella in triatomines, along with the potential for transovarial transmission was

New insights into the genomic information of an overlooked human pathogen: Bartonella rochalimae causative agent of Carrion's disease.

The Bartonella genus includes over twenty species, most transmitted by arthropods and possibly eleven related to human diseases, though some currently lack specific vectors or hosts. Bartonella rochalimae, a Gram-negative pleomorphic bacterium, was first isolated in 2007 from a woman who traveled to Peru and developed Carrion's disease-like symptoms. Hence, this study aims to report on bacterial isolates from patients diagnosed with Carrion's disease, which were found to be caused by B. rochalimae rather than B. bacilliformis, and to characterize the genomic aspects of B. rochalimae as a human

Molecular detection of Bartonella spp. DNA in dogs with hemangiosarcoma.

INTRODUCTION: The potential role of pathogens, particularly vector-transmitted infectious agents, as a cofactor or cause of neoplasia has not been intensively investigated. We previously reported a potential link between Bartonella spp. bacteremia and splenic hemangiosarcoma (HSA) in dogs living in the United States. The purpose of this study was to: 1/ further determine the prevalence of Bartonella spp. DNA in dogs with splenic HSA from throughout the United States; 2/ assess the impact of sample preservation methods on Bartonella spp. DNA amplification using characterized tissue samples from

Napoleon Bonaparte-A Possible Case of Trench Fever.

In 1789, Napoleon Bonaparte reported having a recurrent febrile illness that initially subsided for 4 days and then had multiple relapses of similar duration. A speculative diagnosis of trench fever would be supported by poor hygiene conditions, prolonged exposure to cold, and the presence of lice in Napoleon's barracks environment.
