The domestic cat is the primary reservoir host of three flea-borne Bartonella species, one of which (Bartonella henselae) causes reduced fertility and reproductive failure in experimentally infected cats. Vertical transmission of Bartonella has been documented only in B-cell deficient mice, but not immunocompetent animals. As many free-roaming cats are chronically infected with Bartonella and may be immunocompromised by environmental stress or coinfection, we attempted to isolate Bartonella from the fetal and placental tissues of pregnant queens spayed during trap-neuter-release. Four samples

In Thailand, domestic cats are frequently exposed to vectors that transmit a variety of pathogens. In this study, the prevalence of vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) and their association with feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) were investigated in 187 domestic cats from animal hospitals across five northeastern provinces. Twelve pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and protozoa, were screened using PCR assays. FIV was identified in 2.67% of the cats, while FeLV exhibited a notably higher prevalence of 29.95%. Among the bacterial pathogens, Bartonella henselae

In mammals, detection of Wolbachia bacteria can be used to diagnose filarial infection, while antibiotic treatment to eliminate Wolbachia can assist in eliminating filarial infections. Because Wolbachia are necessary for survival of several filarioids and closely related to Anaplasma and Ehrlichia, we analyzed Wolbachia DNA amplification by Anaplasma/Ehrlichia qPCR, from 39,526 domestic and wildlife animal blood samples submitted to a diagnostic laboratory between 2017 and 2023. Filarial infection was confirmed by 28S gene amplification, followed by phylogenetic analysis utilizing filarial cyt

Bacillary angiomatosis is a rare, opportunistic infection caused by Bartonella spp. In the skin, neovascular proliferation results in erythematous and violaceous papules and nodules. While there are many reports of bacillary angiomatosis in solid organ transplant recipients, only two cases are documented in cardiac transplant recipients. Herein, we report a case of bacillary angiomatosis in a 67-year-old male post-orthotopic cardiac transplant who presented with erythematous papules scattered on the chest, back, and extremities. Biopsies revealed lobular capillary proliferation in the superfic

BACKGROUND: Bartonella schoenbuchensis is suspected to cause deer ked dermatitis and febrile diseases in humans. Deer keds (Lipoptena cervi), which infest cervids (e.g., roe deer, fallow deer), are discussed as potential vectors for B. schoenbuchensis.
METHODS: We analyzed the seroprevalence of anti-B. schoenbuchensis immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies in sera of forest workers (FW; n = 82) compared to control sera of non-forest workers (NFW; n = 118) from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. For this purpose, an immunofluorescence assay (IFA) using Vero E6 cells infected with B. schoenbuchensis w

Habitat fragmentation can have negative impacts on wildlife including increased risk of infectious disease. To assess spatiotemporal changes in pathogen dynamics in vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in response to habitat fragmentation, we used general linear mixed models to investigate the influence of site, year, and tree cover on the prevalence of Bartonella and hemotropic Mycoplasma (hemoplasma) in bats in one large and one small forest fragment in northern Belize across seven years. Bartonella was marginally more prevalent in later years, while year and site differences in hemoplasma infec

INTRODUCTION: Bartonella species are an important emerging cause of blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE). The diagnosis requires serology by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and PCR testing on blood and/or tissue. Access to the guideline-referenced in-house IFA is limited in Africa and a commercially available IFA is used to identify patients with Bartonella spp. infection in our region. Prior study in South Africa has highlighted a high seroprevalence of Bartonella spp. in the general population. It is unclear how to incorporate these factors into the diagnostic thinking when int

BACKGROUND: Feline vector-borne diseases are caused by various pathogens transmitted by arthropods. Many of these infections have zoonotic importance, and cats can serve as sentinels for monitoring the health of both humans and pets. However, there is a limited research on the vector-borne and zoonotic diseases carried by feline populations.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to detect the prevalence of selected vector-borne and zoonotic infections among stray cats in Istanbul, Türkiye, by molecular and phylogenetic techniques.
METHODS: DNA extracted from blood samples of 316 stray cats was analys

The screening of vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) in shelter dog populations is crucial for early detection and informs proper management and control efforts. In this study, we used a targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) assay to detect VBPs in shelter dogs from Texas. Genomic DNA from whole blood (n = 153) was extracted and subjected to the tNGS assay to search for 15 pathogens. A total of 26.1 % (n = 40/153) of dogs were positive for at least one pathogen, with 80 % (32/40) and 20 % (8/40) samples positive for single and co-infections, respectively. Considering single infections, Mycoplas

The increase in the incidence of zoonoses underlines the need for monitoring pathogens in wild animals. Recent studies have revealed the circulation of several microorganisms in rodents, in various geographic and environmental contexts, including African urban habitats. However, Mali, a landlocked country of West Africa, was not extensively studied for the circulation of the microorganisms in rodents. And this paucity of information puts the fight against rodent-borne zoonoses at a disadvantage. This is why we aimed through this study to improve knowledge of potentially zoonotic infectious age

Bartonella spp. is a Gram-negative bacterium transmitted by arthropod vectors, implicated in a range of zoonotic infections affecting both humans and animals. Among zoonotic species, B. henselae is primarily associated with domestic cats and B. vinsonii with dogs. In Italy, Bartonella infections have been reported in both southern and northern regions. This study investigates the presence of Bartonella spp. in fleas and ticks collected from companion animals in Piedmont region, northwestern Italy. A total of 176 flea and 85 tick specimens were obtained from 92 animals (dogs and cats) between M

Bartonella are parasitic pathogens that infect many mammals, including humans, and cause significant diseases. This study investigates the presence, genetic diversity, and tissue tropism of Bartonella in bats and their ectoparasites along the China-Myanmar border. Bats and ectoparasites were collected from Yingjiang, Ruili, and Gengma Counties. Nested PCR (nPCR) and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) were used to detect and quantify Bartonella in bat tissues. Bartonella was isolated using brain-heart infusion broth and tryptone soy agar medium containing 5% sheep blood (TSA containing 5% sheep

Bartonella pose a significant health risk to military working dogs (MWDs), and these zoonotic organisms may also cause disease in humans. According to the U.S. Army zoonotic disease surveillance program, there was a 47.4% seroprevalence for Bartonella spp. among feral dogs in Iraq. This surveillance program identified infection with a novel species Candidatus Bartonella merieuxii (CBm) in 37% of the dogs by whole blood Bartonella DNA amplification and sequencing for the gltA and rpoB genes and intergenic spacer region. This bacterium has not been successfully cultured to date. The objectives o

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are vital pollinators in fruit-producing agroecosystems like highbush blueberry (HBB) and cranberry (CRA). However, their health is threatened by multiple interacting stressors, including pesticides, pathogens, and nutritional changes. We tested the hypothesis that distinct agricultural ecosystems-with different combinations of agrochemical exposure, pathogen loads, and floral resources-elicit ecosystem-specific, tissue-level molecular responses in honey bees. We conducted an integrated multi-omics analysis using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq), proteomics, and gut microbi

Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) are recognised vectors of bacteria that affect human and other animal health, whose reservoirs are in the majority mammals. Among these, some species of the genera Rickettsia (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) and Bartonella (Rhizobiales: Bartonellaceae) are emerging and re-emerging throughout the world; however, their circulation across vast regions of Argentina and numerous animal species, particularly wild species remains largely unknown. The study of wild animal roadkill provides valuable insights into parasitic associations and the presence of pathogenic microor

Feline blood-borne pathogens are important infectious agents of cats that can cause subclinical to severe disease. Awareness of the risks associated with transfusing contaminated blood can reduce morbidity in recipients. Understanding the prevalence and risk factors of these infections is crucial for identifying pathogens that should be screened in feline blood donors. A total of 410 blood samples from client-owned cats were collected between 2018 and 2021 across veterinary hospitals in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area. Conventional PCR was used to detect hemotropic mycoplasmas, Bartonella spp.,

A one-and-a-half-year-old spayed female domestic shorthaired cat, originally obtained as a stray, presented with a two-day history of lethargy, anorexia, and progressive dyspnea. Point-of-care ultrasound showed marked bilateral pleural effusion and a small volume of ascites. Thoracocentesis resulted in the removal of 220 mL of protein poor transudate. Subsequently, a gallop was auscultated and an echocardiogram was performed. Significant findings on echocardiography were a dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype characterized by biventricular eccentric hypertrophy with normal left ventricular diastol

Bartonella species, which are globally distributed gram-negative facultative intracellular bacteria, can infect a diverse range of hosts. Rodents are crucial for the maintenance and dissemination of Bartonella spp., several of which are pathogenic to humans. Although Bartonella infections have been studied in various animals, Bartonella genetic diversity in wild rodents and their fleas has not been investigated. This study examined Bartonella prevalence and genetic diversity in wild rodents and fleas from South Korea in 2023-2024. Bartonella was predominantly detected in the rodent species, Ap

Streblide flies are obligatory ectoparasites with a worldwide distribution, specialized in exclusively parasitizing bats, which serve as important reservoirs of Bartonella spp. These flies are considered potential vectors of emerging Bartonella species. Despite the high diversity of both bats and streblid flies in Brazil, little is known about the occurrence and genetic diversity of Bartonella spp. in these hosts, particularly in cave environments. This study investigated the occurrence and genetic diversity of Bartonella spp. in streblid flies associated with bats from humid forest remnants i

Bats are recognized as hosts of diverse Bartonella species, and Bartonella are known agents of human disease. Here, we reported the isolation of 26 Bartonella strains belonging to eight distinct species from two bat species (Myotis laniger and M. adversus) and their ectoparasites (bat flies and bat mites) collected from Chongming County, Hubei Province, China. We obtained whole genome sequences of the bat-borne Bartonella spp. with second and third generation sequencing. The genome size of the bat-borne Bartonella spp. ranged from 1.39 to 1.98 Mb, with the GC content from 35.30%-38.92%. Phylog
