King Kong Pox: A Case of Severe Mpox and Bartonella Co-infection in a Patient Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Mpox, formerly monkeypox (MPXV), is a zoonotic virus that has emerged globally in recent times, disproportionately affecting immunocompromised individuals, particularly people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PWH). PWH with advanced HIV and low CD4 counts are at higher risk for severe, prolonged courses and sometimes fatal Mpox infections, which may often be complicated by bacterial superinfections and opportunistic co-infections. We present a case of Mpox in a PWH with an initial CD4 count of 2 cells/μL and a high HIV viral load, who had worsening disease despite treatment with

Pan-genome classification of the virulence spectrum of Bartonella and the variation of heme-binding protein virulence factor in isolates from the Tibetan Plateau.

This study classifies Bartonella species based on virulence factors and explores the genomic characteristics of Bartonella isolates from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to understand their ecological adaptations. PCR detection and isolation culture of Bartonella were performed on 50 captured pikas in their habitats on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Qinghai-Tibet isolates were identified through gltA and rpoB phylogenetic analysis, ANI analysis, and single-copy homologous gene phylogeny. Reference genomes of Bartonella species were analyzed for virulence classification via pan-genome and virulence fa

Comparative analysis of diagnostic methods and genetic analysis for canine vector-borne diseases in Thailand.

Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs), transmitted by arthropods, are widespread globally and pose significant health risks to dogs. Diagnosing CVBDs, particularly co-infections, is challenging for laboratory technicians. This study in Thailand evaluated 270 canine blood samples for vector-borne pathogens using microscopy, conventional PCR (cPCR), and the Vcheck M Canine Vector 8 Panel (Vcheck). Microscopy was used for initial screening, while cPCR and Vcheck tested for exposure to eight CVBDs-causing genera (Ehrlichia, Hepatozoon, Mycoplasma, Anaplasma, Rickettsia, Babesia, Leishmania, and Bar

Culture-negative bacteria: a blind spot in bacterial pathogen prioritization.

Culture-negative bacteria (CNB), including Bartonella spp., Coxiella burnetii, Rickettsia spp., Orientia tsutsugamushi, and Leptospira spp., are frequent yet underrecognized causes of febrile illness in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although these pathogens cause significant morbidity and mortality, they often remain undetected because standard culture techniques fail to identify them, resulting in systematic underdiagnosis. This narrative review examines existing criteria used in infectious disease guidelines for pathogen recognition and prioritization, applying them to CNB to ass

Bartonella Infection and Streptococcus constellatus Infective Endocarditis Complicated with Cardiac Arrest: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a severe infectious disease affecting the endocardium and cardiac valves, caused by various pathogens. Among numerous pathogenic microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus is the most common, followed by other streptococci such as Streptococcus viridans and enterococci. Bartonella, a Gram-negative, fastidious parasitic bacillus, is a rare causative agent of IE Streptococcus constellatus, belonging to the Streptococcus milleri group, commonly colonizes oral cavity, upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract, which can cause infections when host imm

Development and validation of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for the serodiagnosis of canine bartonelloses.

Bartonella species, emerging vector-borne pathogens of dogs, are increasingly associated with severe, chronic sequelae, as well as potentially life-threatening diseases, such as endocarditis and myocarditis. Diagnosis of bartonelloses is mainly based on PCR, culture, and serological assays. Despite molecular and biotechnological advances, serological assays employing immunofluorescence antibody (IFA), Western blotting, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technologies have encountered diagnostic limitations, primarily due to poor sensitivity. Using sera from Bartonella-infected and na

Porin A and α/β-hydrolase are necessary and sufficient for hemolysis induced by Bartonella bacilliformis.

Carrion's disease is endemic to the South American Andes and is characterized by fatal hemolytic anemia. This neglected tropical disease is caused by Bartonella bacilliformis, a fastidious and slow-growing pathogen difficult in genetic manipulation. In this study, we determine that porin A and α/β-hydrolase are both necessary and sufficient for hemolysis induced by B. bacilliformis. These genes are identified through a screen of a Tn5 transposon mutant library. Using markerless deletion mutagenesis, porin A and α/β-hydrolase deletion mutants are generated and functionally analyzed by hemolysis

Molecular survey on vector-borne pathogens in urban and peri-urban rodents in Spain.

Rodents are key reservoirs and spillover hosts of major pathogens at the wildlife-domestic-human interface, playing a pivotal role in the eco-epidemiology of vector-borne diseases. Nevertheless, data on rodent infection by pathogens of animal and public health relevance remain limited, particularly in anthropized landscapes. This study aimed to evaluate the circulation of Leishmania infantum, Bartonella spp., and Hepatozoon spp. in rodent populations from anthropized areas in Spain, and to identify potential risk factors associated with infection by these pathogens. Spleen samples from 345 rod

Molecular detection and genetic analysis of Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, and Bartonella in ectoparasites from domestic dogs in Sinaloa, Mexico.

Tick- and flea-borne diseases, including rickettsiosis, bartonellosis, and ehrlichiosis, have increased in incidence globally in recent years, affecting both humans and animals. Although the circulation of these pathogens has been documented in Mexico, information from the state of Sinaloa remains limited. Despite environmental conditions that favor zoonotic transmission, the diversity of dog ectoparasites and the pathogens they harbor remains poorly studied. This study aimed to determine the frequency of the main ectoparasites infesting domestic dogs in Sinaloa, Mexico, and to molecularly and

Infectious uveitis: Epidemiology, etiology, diagnostic test performance and treatment.

Infectious uveitis is an inflammation of the uveal tract, corresponding to the middle layer of the eye, triggered by a response against an infectious agent. This condition is classified into anterior, intermediate, posterior and panuveitis. The most frequent infectious agents in anterior uveitis are viruses, mainly Herpes simplex virus, although it can also be caused by other pathogens such as Bartonella spp., Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Fusarium spp. In intermediate uveitis, syphilis plays a predominant role, while in posterior uveitis various microorganisms are involved, among them Toxopl

Host-Pathogen-Vector Continuum in a Changing Landscape: Potential Transmission Pathways for Bartonella in a Small Mammal Community.

Bacterial infections account for a large proportion of zoonoses. Our current understanding of zoonotic spillover, however, is largely based on studies from viral systems. Small mammals such as rodents and their ectoparasites present a unique system for studying several bacterial pathogens and mapping their spillover pathways. Using Bartonella spp. (a Gram-negative bacteria) as a model system within a rainforest human-use landscape, we investigated (1) ecological correlates of Bartonella prevalence in small mammal hosts and (2) evolutionary relationships between Bartonella spp. and various host

Molecular screening for blood pathogens in synanthropic Pipistrellus bats in Spain reveals novel and human-related hemoplasmas.

Urbanization profoundly alters natural habitats, creating environments where adaptable species such as bats thrive. In developed countries, cities may act as hotspots for pathogen transmission from bats to humans, yet urban bat pathogens remain understudied in Europe. This study examined vector-borne and zoonotic bacteria and protozoa in soprano (Pipistrellus pygmaeus, PPY) and Kuhl's pipistrelles (Pipistrellus kuhlii, PKU) inhabiting Zaragoza, Spain. A total of 213 bats (143 urban, 70 rural; including 7 recaptures) were live-trapped between 2022 and 2024, and blood samples were collected. Ini
