Development and implementation of "Mazboot Bunyad": a digital health intervention for the screening and management of undernutrition among children aged 6-59 months, at private provider clinics in urban slums of Karachi, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Although factor Xa inhibitors have become a popular choice for chronic oral anticoagulation, effective drug reversal remains difficult due to a lack of specific antidote. Currently, 4-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4F-PCC) is considered the treatment of choice for factor Xa inhibitor-related major bleeding. However, safety of 4F-PCC and its risk of thrombosis when used for this off-label purpose remain unclear. The purpose of this retrospective study is to determine the rate of thromboembolism when 4F-PCC is used for the emergent reversal of factor Xa inhibitors. METHODS:

Exploring the relationship between sleep patterns, alcohol and other substances consumption in young adults: Insights from wearables and Mobile surveys in the National Consortium on alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in adolescence (NCANDA) cohort.

INTRODUCTION: The use of psychotropic substances has negative short- and long-term health outcomes, including complex direct and indirect effects on sleep and sleep-cardiovascular function. Here, we investigate daily relationships between self-reported substance use and objective measures of sleep and sleep-related heart rate (HR) in community-dwelling young adults. METHODS: Fifty-five healthy young adults (Mage = 23.1 ± 2.29 y, 30 female) in the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) study completed a 28-day ecological momentary assessment protocol, inclu

Psychotic symptoms following consumption of energy drinks: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Energy drinks (EDs) is an umbrella term for a family of beverages which contain high dosages of caffeine. ED consumption is increasing worldwide, and it is possible that excess ED consumption can cause or worsen symptoms of severe mental disorders (SMD) such as schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. METHODS: We searched three electronic databases for studies on patients with SMD who had experienced psychotic symptoms following the consumption of energy drinks, as well as patients who developed psychotic symptoms after ED consumption without any prior severe psychiatric di

Patterns and prevalence of depression, tobacco, and caffeine use among university students from different majors in Lebanon: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health plays a fundamental role in overall wellbeing, with depression being one of the most common mental health disorders worldwide. University students face significant academic, financial, and social pressures, making them particularly vulnerable to depression. Research showed difference in consumption of psychoactive substances such as caffeine and tobacco among genders and academic fields. It suggests also a link between the use of these substances and an increase in depressive symptoms. The consumption of these substances among all university students in Lebanon from m

Prescription and Nonprescription Drug Use Among People With Eating Disorders.

IMPORTANCE: There are few effective pharmacotherapies for treating eating disorders (EDs). High rates of substance use among individuals with EDs suggest potential self-medication of symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences of individuals with EDs regarding use of prescribed and nonprescribed drugs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This survey study assessed responses to the Medications and Other Drugs for Eating Disorders (MED-FED) survey, which was advertised internationally using social media, online forums, and clinical services and recruited adults who self-reported an ED or di

Trajectories of psychotic-like experiences in youth and associations with lifestyle factors.

BACKGROUND: Persistent and/or distressing psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) during adolescence are associated with poorer subsequent psychiatric outcomes. Modifiable lifestyle factors (such as sleep quality or regular exercise) may improve mental health outcomes; however, it is unknown how lifestyle factors are linked to trajectories of PLEs. METHODS: Using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (N = 10,075, age 9-10 years at baseline), we characterized trajectories of PLEs using latent growth mixture models assessed using the Prodromal Questionnaire-Brief Child Version. Exploring the Impact and Mechanisms of Coffee and Its Active Ingredients on Depression, Anxiety, and Sleep Disorders.

Depression, anxiety, and accompanying sleep disorders are common mood disorders worldwide, significantly affecting individuals' physical and mental well-being as well as their quality of life. Coffee is a widely consumed beverage rich in bioactive compounds, including caffeine, polyphenols, tannins, proteins, and minerals, and studies suggest that coffee and its bioactive constituents demonstrate potential benefits for mental health. However, the specific mechanism by which coffee regulates depression, anxiety and sleep disorders is still unclear, and there is a lack of systematic research in

Self-reported neurostimulant use among university students in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

University students frequently resort to psychostimulants to enhance their physical and mental performance and manage academic pressures. However, these substances can lead to dependence and other undesired symptoms, and little empirical data are available for relevant stakeholders, raising significant concerns in health care. Therefore, this study aims to characterize neurostimulant use among university students in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We collected from 880 students' data using anonymous self-administration. The questionnaire included consumption patterns of caffeine, nicotine, ecstasy,

Caffeine, Alcohol, and Drug Use as Work Adjuncts Among Neurosurgeons. Prevalence, Contributing Factors, and Proposed Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgeons may resort to caffeine, alcohol, and various drugs to maintain peak performance as they grapple with work demands and escalated stress. The prevalence of this controversial strategy remains largely unexplored. METHODS: An anonymous survey of 23 questions formulated by our research group was distributed through personal contacts and neurosurgical societies. Inquiries revolved around the use of medications and other substances for job-related reasons. Data were analyzed via regression and descriptive statistics in python. RESULTS: In total, 215 neurosurgeons (43 resid

Causal relationship between genetically predicted mental disorders and frailty: a bidirectional and multivariable mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: In observational studies, frailty has been strongly associated with mental disorders. However, the mechanisms underlying the association between frailty and mental disorders remain unclear. METHODS: We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to assess the causal relationship between frailty, as measured by the frailty index (FI), and ten common mental disorders. The datasets involved European ancestry individuals and included measurements of the FI (N = 175,226), schizophrenia (SCZ; N = 320,404), major depressive disorder (MDD; N = 143,265), bipolar disorder (N =

Associations between health behaviours, fertility and reproductive outcomes: triangulation of evidence in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa).

BACKGROUND: Guidance to improve fertility includes reducing alcohol and caffeine consumption, achieving healthy weight-range and stopping smoking. Advice is informed by observational evidence, which is often biased by confounding. METHODS: This study primarily used data from a pregnancy cohort, the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study. First, we conducted multivariable regression of health behaviours (alcohol and caffeine consumption, body-mass index (BMI), and smoking) on fertility outcomes (e.g. time to conception) and reproductive outcomes (e.g. age at first birth) (n = 84,075 f

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between young adults' sleep habits and substance use, with a focus on self-medication behaviours.

Young adults (18-30 years) are vulnerable to sleep-wake disturbances and substance use, which are bi-directionally associated. The present work aims to organise the literature that deals with the association between sleep and substance use in young adults, also considering self-medication behaviours. We adopted a framework that accounts for the multidimensionality of sleep and the effect of different substances. We considered sleep disturbances (insomnia symptoms, sleep quality), sleep health dimensions (duration, satisfaction, efficiency, timing, daytime alertness), circadian characteristics

Sleep Deprivation Training to Reduce the Negative Effects of Sleep Loss on Endurance Performance: A Single Case Study.

PURPOSE: Sleep deprivation (SD) is very common during ultraendurance competitions. At present, stimulants such as caffeine and naps are the main strategies used to reduce the negative effects of SD on ultraendurance performance. In this case study, the authors describe the application of a novel strategy consisting of the intermittent repetition of SD (SD training [SDT]) during the weeks preceding an ultraendurance competition. METHODS: A male ultraendurance runner underwent a 6-week SDT program (consisting of 1 night SD every Sunday) in addition to his regular physical training program befor

Diet and Alzheimer's dementia - Nutritional approach to modulate inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease causing dementia in the elderly population. Due to the fact that there is still no cure for Alzheimer's dementia and available treatment strategies bring only symptomatic benefits, there is a pressing demand for other effective strategies such as diet. Since the inflammation hypothesis gained considerable significance in the AD pathogenesis, elucidating the modulatory role of dietary factors on inflammation may help to prevent, delay the onset and slow the progression of AD. Current evidence clearly shows that sy

The Effects of Carbohydrates, in Isolation and Combined with Caffeine, on Cognitive Performance and Mood-Current Evidence and Future Directions.

This review examines the effects of carbohydrates, delivered individually and in combination with caffeine, on a range of cognitive domains and subjective mood. There is evidence for beneficial effects of glucose at a dose of 25 g on episodic memory, but exploration of dose effects has not been systematic and the effects on other cognitive domains is not known. Factors contributing to the differential sensitivity to glucose facilitation include age, task difficulty/demand, task domain, and glucoregulatory control. There is modest evidence to suggest modulating glycemic response may impact cogn

Craving espresso: the dialetics in classifying caffeine as an abuse drug.

Caffeine is the most consumed psychoactive substance in the world; in general, it is not associated to potentially harmful effects. Nevertheless, few studies were performed attempting to investigate the caffeine addiction. The present review was mainly aimed to answer the following question: is caffeine an abuse drug? To adress this point, the effects of caffeine in preclinical and clinical studies were summarized and critically analyzed taking account the abuse disorders described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). We concluded that the diagnostic criteria e
