Ultra-processed food consumption during pregnancy and emotional and behavioral problems in offspring.

Evidence on prenatal ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption and offspring psychopathological problems remains limited. Therefore, this study assessed the associations between UPF consumption during pregnancy and offspring emotional and behavioral problems. The potential impact of theoretically replacing UPFs with unprocessed or minimally processed foods was also examined using simulation models. The analyses included 201 mother-child pairs from the ECLIPSES study. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire at 12, 24, and 36 weeks of gestation. UPF consumption (%

A narrative review of school-based preventive interventions on mental disorders and addictions.

In recent years, there has been considerable concern about the deterioration of mental health in children and adolescents, and there is a coincidence between mental disorders and addictive disorders. In view of this situation, it is important to review preventive interventions from the educational field, since it is considered an area of socialization par excellence of the subjects that can avoid or reduce exposure to adversities at an early age. For this purpose, a narrative review was carried out. The databases PubMed, PsycINFO and ERIC were searched. A total of 2096 records were retrieved f

Brief internet intervention for grieving children and adolescents: co-design and trial protocol.

Background: Internet interventions may improve access to help for grieving young people. In feedback from recent trials of internet interventions for grief, youth emphasised treatments should be shorter to address lack of time, which was the main barrier to uptake. Objective: The aim was to co-design a new brief internet intervention for grieving children and adolescents, and to outline a protocol for a pilot feasibility randomised controlled trial.Method: Nine children and adolescents (mean age =   15.22, 77.7% female, 33.3% male) co-designed the brief internet intervention. Results: A randomis

Psychological and psychosocial interventions for people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and smoking addiction: A systematic review and pairwise meta-analysis.

This systematic review and pairwise meta-analysis examined the efficacy of psychological and psychosocial smoking cessation interventions in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Tobacco use is highly prevalent in this population and negatively affects both physical and mental health, potentially interfering with treatment outcomes. A comprehensive search of electronic databases up to January 13, 2025 identified 14 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), of which nine were included in the meta-analysis. Primary outcomes included smoking reduction measured with a) abstinence (nu

Tobacco and Cannabis Use Disorders: Similarities, Differences and Therapeutic Approaches.

Cannabis and tobacco are two of the most commonly used drugs worldwide. Both drugs can lead to a use disorder, characterized by compulsive use despite harm and mediated by neurobiological changes in reward and motivational circuitry. Co-use of cannabis and tobacco is common and influences disorder severity and outcomes. Both cannabis use disorder (CUD) and tobacco use disorder (TUD) share key features, such as dopaminergic reward system involvement, severity of withdrawal symptoms, and mental health comorbidities, yet they differ in neurobiological pathways, diagnostic profiles, and available

A feasibility trial of a psychological intervention for addressing alcohol problems during pregnancy: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: South Africa has the highest global prevalence of foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Despite guidelines for FASD prevention, there are no community-based psychological interventions to reduce alcohol use during pregnancy. Through formative research, a culturally adapted intervention, the Mommy and Baby Wellness Programme, was developed to address the needs of pregnant women in the setting. The aim of the feasibility trial is to refine the trial methods before conducting a full-scale trial, and explore the feasibility of programme delivery, the acceptability of session conten

White matter signatures of addiction diverge across opioids, cannabis and nicotine and predict impulsive choice in cannabis dependence.

White matter (WM) microstructure is implicated in the neurobiology of substance use disorders (SUDs), yet direct comparisons across substance-dependence syndromes remain scarce. It is also unclear whether WM abnormalities relate to impulsive decision-making and substance use severity. We performed a cross-sectional, dual-centre diffusion MRI study and quantified WM microstructure using diffusion tensor imaging and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging in 87 individuals with SUDs (48 with cannabis dependence (CUD), 16 with opioid dependence (OUD), and 23 with nicotine dependence (N

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Prevalence of Mental Disorders and Suicidality Among Children and Adolescents Living with HIV in South Africa.

Despite progress in HIV prevention and treatment, global data suggests that youth living with HIV remain at risk of mental disorders and suicidality. However, reliable epidemiological data from South Africa (SA) are limited. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesize evidence on the prevalence of mental disorders and suicidality among SA children and adolescents (≤ 19 years) living with HIV. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scielo (SA), and Google Scholar published before 19th February 2025. Twelve studies published between 2010 a

Socioeconomic disparities in substance use disorder prevalence and severity across the life course.

Gradients across socioeconomic status (SES) exist across most health conditions. While there has been significant attention devoted to the relationship between SES and physical and mental health, less research has examined how these relate to substance use disorders (SUD). In the current study, we use data from the prospective study within the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) to explore the relationship between SES (in early life and adulthood) with multiple substance use disorders (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, opioid, cocaine, and other substances). We find that early l

Mental health and support for rigorous tobacco control strategies in South Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco endgame strategy includes policies to end the tobacco epidemic. As tobacco smoking prevalence is higher among people with mental health conditions (MHC), understanding the impact of rigorous tobacco control strategies for this group is critical. This study examined support for five tobacco control strategies among people with MHCs: increasing tobacco product tax, reducing tobacco retail locations, ending tobacco sales in alcohol-licensed venues, limiting retailers to one tobacco point of sale and reduced nicotine in smoked tobacco. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveying of a

Skills Training in Affective Recovery Video and Text Programs for Recent Sexual Assault Survivors: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Three-quarters of sexual assault (SA) survivors meet criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 1 month after SA, and PTSD is highly comorbid with substance use disorders. Intervening early is critical to preventing the onset or escalation of these conditions. OBJECTIVE: To assess the preliminary effectiveness of Skills Training in Affective Recovery (STAR), a brief video, and TextSTAR, a 3-week daily text message program on reducing posttraumatic stress and substance misuse symptoms among SA survivors during an SA medical forensic examination. Neuromelanin-MRI and tobacco smoking in first episode psychosis patients and controls.

Tobacco smoking is highly prevalent among patients with psychosis and is associated with worse clinical outcomes. Dopamine functioning is implicated in both psychosis and tobacco use. Neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (NM-MRI) of the substantia nigra is an emerging imaging technique that provides an indirect marker of dopamine function. Previous studies have shown higher NM-MRI signal in patients with psychosis. However, to date, no NM-MRI studies have examined the effects of tobacco smoking. This pre-registered study investigates the association between tobacco smoking and NM-

Varenicline for the management of cannabis use disorder: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is one of the highest prevalence mental health conditions globally. Psychosocial treatments for CUD have modest efficacy. There are currently no approved adjunctive pharmacological approaches for CUD. Varenicline, a nicotinic receptor partial agonist approved for use in smoking cessation, has shown promise as a treatment for CUD. This study aims to synthesise the literature on the efficacy of varenicline in treating CUD. A secondary aim is to examine the tolerability of varenicline and its effect on concurrent tobacco use within CUD treatment. METHODS

Tobacco Use Disorder and Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions: Considerations for Future DSM.

There is a significantly higher prevalence of tobacco use disorder (TUD) among individuals with mental health conditions, and they account for nearly 40% of cigarettes smoked in the United States. Although the DSM-5 notes the high prevalence of co-occurring mental health conditions with TUD and that nicotine withdrawal symptoms mimic the symptoms of other mental health conditions such as anxiety, depressive, and bipolar disorders, the discussion of co-occurring mental health conditions in relation to TUD is limited. DSM-6 presents an important opportunity to expand diagnostic guidance, recogni

And what about tobacco? Considerations for managing tobacco use in residential treatment facilities for substance use disorders.

Tobacco use remains a major public health concern worldwide. In residential treatment facilities for substance use disorders, little effort is made to help individuals quit smoking, even though the primary goal of treatment is to promote the overall health through abstinence from all drugs. The aim of this study was to analyze the perceptions of professionals and individuals in treatment regarding the management of tobacco use within residential therapeutic settings. We conducted a qualitative study in treatment centers in Spain, using thematic content analysis of focus groups with 29 professi

Environmental Context and Reporting Completeness of Event-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment in Cigarette and Cannabis Use.

INTRODUCTION: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) allows researchers to capture substance use as it occurs in daily life, but participants may not report every use event. Little is known about whether the environments where people spend time affect the completeness of these reports. METHODS: We examined how consistently young adults reported cigarette and cannabis use through event-based EMA and whether reporting differed by the social vulnerability of places they visited. We analysed 30 days of GPS-enabled EMA and daily diary data from 34 young adults in California (730 participant days).

Mental health predictors of treatment engagement and completion in substance use disorder treatment: Within- and between-person evidence from a 15-year Western Australian cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment retention remains a major barrier in substance-use disorder (SUD) treatment. Most prior studies focus on single episodes and between-person differences, leaving uncertain how within-person fluctuations in symptom severity and risk indicators affect engagement and completion across repeated episodes. We examined whether baseline and within-episode changes in substance-use severity, psychological distress, and clinical risk profiles predict treatment attendance, duration, and completion across multiple treatment episodes. METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort design, we

Polysubstance use after remission in first-episode psychosis: Associations with positive symptoms and self-care.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use is common among patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP). While long-term studies link substance use to poorer outcomes, short-term associations, particularly involving polysubstance use, remain understudied. This study examined substance use patterns 3 to 6 months after remission and their associations with symptoms, cognition, and functioning. METHODS: Data were derived from the HAMLETT randomized controlled trial, which compared continuation versus early discontinuation of antipsychotic medication following remission, using assessments at baseline, 3, an

Latent Classes of Substance Use in Young Adult Survivors of Child Maltreatment and Adversity: A 20-Year Prospective Investigation.

Persistent substance use during the transition into adulthood increases risk for long-term mental and physical health problems. Participants (N = 483) and their caregivers were recruited at age 4 years due to exposure to (or high risk for) child abuse and/or neglect. Data on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) were collected prospectively during participant ages 0-18 years between the 1990s and early 2000s. In 2012, participants reported past 12-month substance use at a follow-up online survey in young adulthood (Mage = 23.8). A latent class analysis using nine dichotomous substance use indic

American Indian Cultural Adaptation to the Intervention for Nicotine Dependence: Education, Prevention, Tobacco, and Health (INDEPTH) Curriculum: A Collaborative Approach.

BACKGROUND: American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) youth experience disproportionately high rates of commercial tobacco use, including vaping electronic cigarettes, compared to non-AIAN youth. Despite this disparity, culturally relevant prevention interventions remain limited and often inaccessible. OBJECTIVES: This study describes the community-based participatory process used to culturally adapt a vaping prevention intervention for AIAN youth, in collaboration with a community organization and local schools. This paper focuses on the formative, qualitative phase of the intervention adapta
