Fetal and neonatal growth retardation may result in long term neurological and mental morbidity. There are multiple causes for intrauterine growth retardation but one etiology proposed is maternal drugs. In many instances it is difficult to determine if the growth retardation is due to the drugs or it is due to the disease process for which the mother receives the drugs. Weight and FOC appear to be more adversely effected than length. One of the first concern in medicine today is focused on illnesses resulting from interacting risk factors. Such an analysis requires a multidisciplinary approach. Smoking behaviour is a well known risk factor and is related to real, symbolic and imaginative life. Starting to smoke is monitored by psychosociological factors as well as smoking habits seems to be combined with biological factors. A smoker's consultation project is presented: individual preliminary talks and group therapy are seen from a psychosomatic point of view including positive connotation and mental imagery training.

A three year experiment with group hypnosis therapy for the teaching of medical self-hypnosis is reported. The teaching was divided into 7 courses followed by a total of 142 pupil-patients. The self-hypnotic techniques employed maximised motivational and gratification factors. A special type of deep-breathing is also described. This at least partially solves the problem of inducing a sufficiently deep trance for the achievement of appreciable results. Its efficacity was confirmed in almost all the patients despite the number and diversity of their problems and varied motivation.

Post-IHD episode memory problems and their correlates were investigated among 157 male ischemic heart disease patients under the age of 65. Twenty-five per cent of these patients reported memory difficulties originating during the year following admission to hospital. Recent work on principles of pleasure and on endogenous opioïd system enlightens some regulations of mental comfort and of homeostasis of the nervous system. From this point of view, the choice of specific drugs, during the first months of their use, would give an indirect picture of the troubles which caused initially the use of these substances. The present study discloses, behind the apparent anarchy of mono- and polytoxicopathies, some constant relations between age and sex of drug-users and specific choice of drugs.

A survey of mental health in relation to patterns of alcohol, tobacco, pharmaceutical drug use and reducing diets was carried out in six Hobart high schools and matriculation colleges. A response rate of 89% was achieved, yielding a sample of 2,419 teenagers. Psychiatric disorder was assessed by the 60-item General Health Questionnaire. A statistically significant association was found between the probability of psychiatric disturbance and the use of alcohol, cigarettes, analgesics, vitamin supplements and weight-reducing diets.

This project was initiated in the rural areas of the Punjab to assess the prevailing trends in the abuse of intoxicating drugs by rural folk, with a view to contributing to future primary mental health care planning as an integral part of comprehensive health care planning. On the basis of epidemiological surveys on adolescents within the overall population (university or high-school students and young workers) or on samples of young people singled out for their pathological behavior (committing suicide, for example), the authors tried to find those factors which have a predicting value as to favor a possible evolution towards deviancy. They showed that, taking into account the sociopsychological and relational environment in which it occurs, the regular use of both alcohol and tobacco may be considered as an alert-sign.

This paper presents the results of two studies on drug abuse carried out among young people. One study included a sample of 2,846 pupils from 17 secondary schools in Lagos, the other 300 patients admitted to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for treatment of drug abuse. Among the secondary school students the major substances used were alcohol, barbiturates, central nervous system stimulants, tobacco, Mandrax and cannabis. The majority of hospital patients treated for drug abuse were cannabis users.

Four decades ago 204 men were selected as adolescents for an interdisciplinary study of health; since then they have been followed biennially. Of the 185 men who remained in the study and in good health until 1964 (age, 42 +/- 1 years), 100 men remained in excellent physical health over the next 11 years, 54 acquired minor problems, and 31 acquired serious chronic illness or died. Chronic cannabis intoxication of a significant fraction of the male population still prevails in Morocco. The preparation used (kif) is a powder made from the dried flower of the female plant. It contains 2 to 3% THC and is smoked mixed with tobacco (1/3 of the mixture). Cultivation of kif is tolerated in an area of 60 square miles in the high Rif mountain of Northern Morocco, where it constitutes the main cash crop of the local farmers.
