Development of Substance Use Problems: The Role of Adolescent Cannabis Age of Onset, Frequency of Use and Childhood Risk Factors.

Substance use (SU) problems are critical public health concerns. This study investigated how childhood risk factors and cannabis age of onset (CAO) in adolescence predict later SU problems, using data from the two cohorts of the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (N = 306; 57% female; N = 1489; 54% female), followed from birth to age 23. A direct association between early CAO and increased cannabis use problems was found in males (cohort 1: β = -0.47; cohort 2: β = -0.22), but not in females. In both sexes, CAO was indirectly associated with later cannabis use problems via increase

Co-designed unguided internet cognitive behaviour therapy for grief in adolescence: a pilot randomised controlled trial.

This pilot trial aimed to evaluate feasibility and acceptability of co-designed unguided internet CBT for grief. Efficacy was assessed for anxiety (primary outcome), well-being, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and prolonged grief (secondary outcomes), relative to four-week wait-list control. There were 88 participants, M age = 16.95 years, SD = 1.45, who had experienced the death of a person (n = 72; 81.82%) or other loss (e.g. parental divorce; n = 16; 18.81%). Participants were randomised to intervention (n = 49; 55.68%), or waitlist control (n = 39; 44.31%). Outcome measur

Digital health interventions for women in frontline public service roles: A systematic review of effectiveness in reducing substance use.

Frontline occupations, including military, healthcare, and first responders, often include frequent exposure to traumatic events, increasing the risk of substance use disorders (SUDs). Research has shown that those in high-intensity occupations are at higher risk of developing SUDs compared to the general population. Women face unique experiences related to substance use, including greater functional impairment and barriers to treatment access. Yet, understanding of the effectiveness of digital health technologies in addressing substance use among women in frontline occupations is limited. Thi

Mortality and morbidity burden associated with smoking: evidence from a 1.6 million cohort in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence on the disease burden of smoking is often outdated and incomprehensive, particularly in Asia, which plays a pivotal role in the global tobacco control community. This study aimed to provide an updated and comprehensive estimate of the mortality and morbidity burden associated with smoking in Hong Kong. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adults with smoking status information recorded in the Hong Kong Hospital Authority database between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2012. Subjects were classified into never-smokers, ex-smokers, and current smokers.

Prenatal Adversities and Risk of Persistent Youth Psychopathology and Altered Cortical Thinning.

IMPORTANCE: Adverse prenatal exposures (APEs) often co-occur and independently associate with risk for childhood psychopathology. Whether exposure to multiple APEs is associated with persistent clinical effects through adolescence or underlying changes in brain maturation remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate longitudinal associations among cumulative APE burden, risk for psychopathology, and age-related cortical thinning in adolescents. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study analyzed 4-year follow-up data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, which

Developmental windows of vulnerability: Substance-specific effects of prenatal exposure timing on child psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis exposure are known risks for childhood psychopathology symptoms, but gaps persist in identifying substance-specific developmental vulnerability windows. Exposure timing relative to maternal pregnancy awareness may alter outcomes, yet this temporal specificity remains unclarified, limiting targeted risk assessment and prevention. METHODS: Data from 7777 children in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (enrolled 2016-2018) were analyzed. Prenatal substance exposure timing was categorized as pre-awareness (exposure before maternal a

Research on Eating and Adolescent Lifestyle (REAL) 2.0: 15-year follow-up study of eating disorders and weight-related trajectories, mental health and substance use health from early adolescence to early adulthood-a Canadian cohort profile.

PURPOSE: Few studies have examined how psychosocial risk and protective factors in adolescence shape mental health outcomes and other multimorbid conditions in adulthood, particularly among Canadian youth. The Research on Eating and Adolescent Lifestyle (REAL) 2.0 study was a 15-year follow-up cohort study designed to investigate how early etiological factors, including body image and disordered eating symptoms in adolescence, contribute to the development of eating, weight-related concerns, mental health and substance use health problems in early adulthood. In this paper, we describe the REAL

Prospective study of long COVID-related psychological and biological outcomes in individuals with tobacco use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with tobacco use disorder (TUD) may be particularly vulnerable to the challenges following long COVID. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed whether individuals with TUD and no prior neuropsychiatric conditions developed new symptoms following long COVID-19 infection. METHODS: A cohort of 104 adults with TUD completed psychological and biological assessments before the COVID-19 pandemic and were reevaluated four months post-long COVID diagnosis. Evaluations covered mood symptoms, sleep, perceived stress, quality of life, and serum cortisol. RESULTS: The participants exhibit

Adolescent cyberbullying and polysubstance use: unpacking sex differences.

The rise of social media platforms has heightened cyberbullying among adolescents, closely tied to negative mental health outcomes. Substance use, including alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco, also remains a significant concern for this population. This study examines the relationship between cyberbullying and substance use, exploring potential sex differences in these associations. We analyzed data from the 2021 Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (ABES) (n = 6,740 students in grades 9-12). We used multinomial logistic regression models to assess the relationship between past-year cyberbu

Global burden of amphetamine, cannabis, cocaine and opioid use in 204 countries, 1990-2023: a Global Burden of Disease Study.

Drug use disorders (DUDs) are emerging global public health challenges. Here we investigated the global and regional estimates of the prevalence and burden of DUDs, including amphetamine, cannabis, cocaine and opioid use disorders, from 1990 to 2023 for 204 countries and territories by using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023. Overall, trends in global age-standardized disability-adjusted life-years of DUDs increased from 169.3 (95% uncertainty interval (95% UI), 134.4-203.9) per 100,000 people in 1990 to 212.0 (95% UI, 179.2-245.6) in 2023. In 2023, both prevalence and burden of DUDs wer

Lifetime Adversity Among Individuals With Early Phase Psychosis and Comorbid Substance Misuse.

BACKGROUND: Adverse events and substance misuse are rarely examined together among people in early phase psychosis, although both are frequently examined in isolation given their high prevalence in this population. As a result, the frequency of the three-way overlap is unclear. Moreover, adverse events are often limited to childhood abuse and rarely include illness-related events (e.g., threatening hallucinations). This study aims to explore the overlap between these variables and provide a more detailed understanding of adversity in this population and their desire to disclose experiences. M

Smoking, plasma concentration, antipsychotic polypharmacy and adverse drug reaction burden in clozapine outpatients.

BACKGROUND: Clozapine is the most effective therapy for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, yet adverse drug reactions (ADRs) limit its use. The concurrent ADR burden in outpatients and its relation to psychotropic polypharmacy, tobacco smoking and measured clozapine exposure has not been well characterised. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional review of medical records for 360 adults receiving maintenance clozapine at a dedicated outpatient clinic. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were ascertained using a standardised patient checklist alongside clinical measures. We used multiv

Effectiveness and clinical predictors of a virtual based combined cognitive behavioral and motivational enhancement group therapy for adults with cannabis use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use has increased in recent years, while perceptions of harm have declined. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and their combinations (CBT-MET) are evidence-based interventions for CUD, though their effectiveness when delivered virtually is underexplored. This study evaluated the clinical efficacy of a virtual 12-week group-based CBT-MET program in individuals with CUD and examined baseline predictors of treatment response. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 116 adults enrolled in a virtual group-based CBT-MET prog

Nicotine use and patient-directed discharge rate in psychiatric inpatients: A retrospective cohort.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Disproportionate use of tobacco among psychiatric patients exacerbates psychiatric symptoms, increases suicide risk, alters therapeutic drug levels, and negatively affects adherence. Patient-directed discharge (PDD) rates are higher among patients who smoke, and smoking cessation treatments have been reported to reduce this risk. This study investigates the association of tobacco use and cessation treatments with PDD rates. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on a random sample of 25,829 adult patients admitted voluntarily to inpatient psychiatric facili

Cannabis use among Canadian veterans: associations with the use of other substances, chronic pain conditions, mental disorders, suicide behaviours, and help-seeking.

BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of Veterans experience mental and physical health difficulties, including post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain, for which cannabis is sometimes medically authorized. However, relatively little is known about cannabis use among Canadian Veterans. Information on the prevalence of use, as well as the mental health profiles and help-seeking behaviours of Veterans who use cannabis, is important for developing more targeted prevention and intervention services and supports. METHODS: The current study used data from Veteran respondents (n = 1992) of the
