BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that moral judgments are affected by social cognitive abilities, such as theory of mind (ToM). This study examines how information about an actor's beliefs and the consequences of their actions affect the moral evaluation of the character's behavior in social events. Our research builds upon previous studies, which have shown that these factors contribute differently to moral judgments made by both adults and young children.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore how participants with schizophrenia and healthy controls read stories about social situati

Assessing patient decision-making capacity while adhering to the requests of patients with mental illness remains a great ethical challenge. In patients with severe mental illness, the assessment of decision-making capacity can be difficult, particularly when a care team is also trying to navigate cultural, educational, and linguistic barriers. It becomes especially complex in situations where the patient is not only diagnosed with a severe mental illness but also suffers from a comorbid medical illness that the patient refuses to have treated appropriately. Balancing patient wishes while resp

INTRODUCTION: Impaired function of brain morphogenic genes is considered one of the predisposing factors for the manifestation of psychiatric and cognitive disorders, such as paranoid schizophrenia (SCZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Identification of such genes (genes of neurotrophic factors and guidance molecules among them) and their deleterious genetic variants serves as a key to diagnosis, prevention, and possibly treatment of such disorders. In this study, we have examined the prevalence of genomic variants in brain morphogenic genes in individuals with SCZ and MDD within a Russia

BACKGROUND: Theory of Mind (ToM) impairment has repeatedly been found in paranoid schizophrenia. The current study aims at investigating whether this is related to a deficit in ToM (undermentalizing) or an increased ToM ability to hyperattribute others' mental states (overmentalizing).
METHODS: Mental state attribution was examined in 24 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (12 acute paranoid (APS) and 12 post-acute paranoid (PPS)) with regard to positive symptoms as well as matched healthy persons using a moving shapes paradigm. We used 3-T-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to pr

OBJECTIVE: To identify differences in electroencephalographic parameters in schizophrenia patients with and without a history of suicide attempts.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty-seven inpatients (50 men and 37 women) with paranoid schizophrenia were examined. Suicidal attempts in the anamnesis of patients were verified by a psychiatrist on the basis of clinical interviewing. The severity of psychopathological symptoms was assessed using The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) based on a five-factor model. Electroencephalogram (EEG) parameters were recorded and evaluated using a 16-chan

OBJECTIVE: The clinical manifestations of methamphetamine (METH)-associated psychosis (MAP) and acute paranoid schizophrenia (SCZ) are similar. This study aims to assess regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in individuals who use METH and in those with SCZ using the MRI arterial spin labeling (ASL) technique.
METHODS: We prospectively recruited 68 participants and divided them into four groups: MAP (N = 15), SCZ (N = 13), METH users with no psychosis (MNP; N = 22), and normal healthy controls (CRL; N = 18). We measured rCBF using an MRI three-dimensional pseudo-continuous ASL sequence. Clinica

Introduction: Reelin is a neuropeptide responsible for the migration and positioning of pyramidal neurons, interneurons, and Purkinje cells. In adulthood, it still supports neuroplasticity, especially dendritic spines formation and glutamatergic neurotransmission. Genetic studies have confirmed the involvement of reelin system failure in the etiopathogenesis of mental diseases, including schizophrenia. Given the role of reelin in brain cytoarchitectonics and the regularly observed reduction in its activity in prefrontal areas in cases of schizophrenia, dysfunction of the reelin pathway fits th

Hypothermia, a potentially fatal condition, can result from various internal causes, including certain medications. Antipsychotics, in particular, are associated with hypothermia, typically emerging 7-10 days after dosage adjustments. Here, we report the case of a 68-year-old male with a history of cerebral palsy, bipolar disorder, and paranoid schizophrenia who was admitted due to poor oral intake and was found to have persistent hypothermia despite active external rewarming. After substituting risperidone with aripiprazole, his temperature normalized, and he experienced no further hypothermi

Understanding local worldviews is a challenge during clinical encounters, especially when they involve cultural references without acceptance from the medical community. Gangstalking is a Western cultural notion which refers to systematic harassment, surveillance, and torture from unseen or covert assailants or networks. It is not a 'real phenomenon' compared with genuine stalking, but experients report worse depression, post-traumatic symptoms, suicidal ideation, and longer lasting encounters. Post-schizophrenic depression (PSD) increases the morbidity, mortality, and health burden in patients with schizophrenia. However, treatment of PSD is challenging due to the lack of substantial evidence of standard clinical practice. This study was aimed at comparing the efficacy and safety of low-dose amisulpride versus olanzapine-fluoxetine combination (OFC) in PSD. This was a randomized controlled trial conducted in sixty patients with PSD fulfilling the eligibility criteria. Recruited patients were randomized to receive either amisulpride at low dose (i.e., 100-300 mg/day) or OFC (5/10 mg

Schizophrenia is a complex disorder with symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and impaired social interactions, and deficits in facial emotion recognition are a key area of impairment. Studies indicate that recognizing facial emotions is essential for social interaction, and individuals with schizophrenia show significant difficulties, especially in recognizing negative emotions. Previous research has primarily focused on patients, with less attention on their first-degree relatives. This study investigates the ability to recognize negative facial expressions in paranoid and non-paranoi

Schizophrenia is a multifaceted psychiatric disorder characterized by hallucinations, delusions, cognitive impairments, and behavioral disturbances. Genetic factors significantly contribute to its pathogenesis, accounting for approximately 80% of the heritability. Globally, about 1% of the population is affected by schizophrenia, with 45,054 individuals in Kazakhstan receiving medical treatment for the condition, indicating a prevalence rate of 238,6 per 100,000 people. The rise in mental health disorders in Kazakhstan underscores the need for personalized treatment approaches to address these

In 1939, Hans Luxenburger published a detailed overview of the current status of schizophrenia genetics research, reaching six major conclusions. First, schizophrenia is clearly a hereditary disease. Second, however, schizophrenia is not the hereditary trait itself but rather the consequences of a slowly developing biological progress, the nature of which remains entirely unknown. Third, the full manifestation of the disorder requires certain environmental influences that must come into play. In around 30% of cases, the environment can inhibit hereditary factors so that the predisposition does

INTRODUCTION: Clinical assessment of mood and anxiety change often relies on clinical assessment or self-reported scales. Using smartphone digital phenotyping data and resulting markers of behavior (e.g., sleep) to augment clinical symptom scores offers a scalable and potentially more valid method to understand changes in patients' state. This paper explores the potential of using a combination of active and passive sensors in the context of smartphone-based digital phenotyping to assess mood and anxiety changes in two distinct cohorts of patients to assess the preliminary reliability and vali
