Association of the genetic polymorphisms of metabolizing enzymes, transporters, target receptors and their interactions with treatment response to olanzapine in chinese han schizophrenia patients.

Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic drug that has been increasingly used for treatment in schizophrenia. It has been observed that olanzapine responses in schizophrenia patients vary individually, but the reason has not been elucidated. In the study, we aimed to comprehensively explore the relationships between olanzapine responses and genetic polymorphisms of drug metabolizing enzymes, transporters and target receptors, and so as to interpret the reason of good and poor responses of olanzapine. A total of 241 Chinese Han paranoid schizophrenia who treated with olanzapine alone for 4 weeks

A genome-wide association study identifies a gene network associated with paranoid schizophrenia and antipsychotics-induced tardive dyskinesia.

In the present study we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in a cohort of 505 patients with paranoid schizophrenia (SCZ), of which 95 had tardive dyskinesia (TD), and 503 healthy controls. Using data generated by the PsychENCODE Consortium (PEC) and other bioinformatic databases, we revealed a gene network, implicated in neurodevelopment and brain function, associated with both these disorders. Almost all these genes are in gene or isoform co-expression PEC network modules important for the functioning of the brain; the activity of these networks is also altered in SCZ, bipolar d

The Effect of Smartphone-Based Cognitive Training on the Functional/Cognitive Markers of Schizophrenia: A One-Year Randomized Study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is associated with long-term disability that results in the deterioration of both the social and professional status of individuals with schizophrenia. The impact of antipsychotic therapy on cognitive function is insufficient. Cognitive training is therefore proposed as a tool for cognitive rehabilitation in schizophrenia. In this study we investigated the effect of self-administered cognitive training using a smartphone-based application on the cognitive function of paranoid schizophrenia patients focusing on response time, correct answer rate, incorrect answe

Validation of the lithuanian version of the self-evaluation of negative symptoms scale (SNS).

PURPOSE: To validate the Lithuanian version of the Self-Evaluation Negative Symptoms Scale (Lith-SNS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A double translation from French to Lithuanian and back was performed. We included patients from in-patient and out-patient settings that had a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia according to ICD-10 criteria and were screened as free from acute psychotic symptoms using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Participants were evaluated using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BRPS) and completed the Lith-SNS scale. We measured internal consistency,

Psychiatric Alterations after Previous Temporal Lobectomy: Report of Cases and Review.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior temporal lobectomy (LTA) is a surgical procedure commonly used for the treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy refractory to medical management, with high success rates in the control of seizures. However, an important association with psychiatric illnesses has been described that can alter the postoperative outcome in these patients. METHODS: A series of 2 cases of patients who, despite successful crisis control, developed psychiatric complications in the postoperative period of anterior temporal lobectomy. RESULTS: The cases included a male patient with no history of pre

EVALUATION OF THE EFFICACY OF ATYPICAL ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS AND PSYCHOTHERAPY IN PATIENTS WITH PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA BASED ON THE DURATION OF REMISSION.

Duration of remission (DR) is the equivalent of the risk of re-hospitalization, which is considered as evidence of unsuccessful completion of the prescribed treatment. The evidence of DR informativeness as a criterion for effectiveness of prescriptions is distribution of DR values among patients with re-hospitalization during the observation period. The aim of the study is to analyse the duration of remission as a criterion for the effectiveness of prescribing atypical antipsychotic drugs and psychotherapy for patients with paranoid schizophrenia. 4 groups of patients were formed: the study gr

The Genealogy of Dementia Praecox I: Signs and Symptoms of Delusional Psychoses From 1880 to 1900.

We can trace, with high congruence, the clinical syndromes of depression and mania as described over the 20th century in psychiatric textbooks back to 1880 and to the earliest writing of Kraepelin published in 1883. However, this is not the case for Kraepelin's 2 delusional syndromes central to his overall nosology: Dementia Paranoides (later paranoid schizophrenia) and Paranoia. A detailed examination of 28 textbook descriptions of delusional psychoses from 1880 to 1900 reveals a diverse and partially overlapping set of syndromes with an admixture of symptoms and signs that would later be con

Leukocytoclastic vasculitis secondary to clozapine.

Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) may be secondary to drugs, underlying infection, collagen vascular disorders, or malignancy. Drug-induced vasculitis contributes to 10% of vasculitic skin lesions cases usually developing within 7-21 days of treatment initiation. The present case highlights a report of LCV in a 59-year-old male with a history of paranoid schizophrenia on clozapine therapy. The report upsurges the need to promote awareness and expedite diagnosis and treatment of drug-induced LCVs.

Postinjection Delirium/Sedation Syndrome After 31st Long-Acting Olanzapine Depot Injection.

OBJECTIVE: Long-acting depot preparations of antipsychotics are the mainstay of treatment for patients with schizophrenia who show nonadherence to their medications. Olanzapine pamoate is one of the recently approved long-acting depot psychotropic preparations that have shown its efficacy both in clinical trials and in clinical uses against the illness. However, emerging literature indicates toward a cluster of adverse effects known as postinjection delirium/sedation syndrome (PDSS). METHODS: We here present a case of PDSS in a woman with paranoid schizophrenia. After maintaining well for alm

Paranoid schizophrenia and methamphetamine-induced paranoia are both characterized by a similar LINE-1 partial methylation profile, which is more pronounced in paranoid schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that schizophrenia is a neuro-immune disorder. Genes linked to intragenic LINE-1 methylation show a strong association with immune-associated disorders including psychosis. The aim of this study was to examine LINE-1 methylation patterns in paranoid schizophrenia and methamphetamine-induced paranoia, a model for schizophrenia. METHODS: This study recruited 31 patients with paranoid schizophrenia, 94 with methamphetamine-induced paranoia (MIP) and 163 normal controls. LINE-1 methylation patterns were assayed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and a combined bis

Antisocial Personality Traits as a Risk Factor of Violence between Individuals with Mental Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorder can increase the likelihood of taking violent acts of some individuals, but only a small percentage of violence in societies could be attributed to patients with mental health problems. For the past several years numerous studies related to forensic psychiatry has confirmed a close causal relationship between violent offenders and psychiatric comorbidity. Several studies have provided strong evidence that antisocial personality disorders (APD) represent a significant clinical risk for violence. AIM: This study aims to show the relationship between antisocial person

[The « syndrome de glissement »].

The "syndrome de glissement" The "syndrome de glissement » is a controversial notion that is still used by some French geriatricians, although it does not belong to any international disease classification and has very few evidence-based data. Some authors found clinical relevance to this notion, whereas others believe its use is potentially associated with certain risks. The clinical practice and the few available evidence related to syndrome de glissement" tend to suggest that this syndrome usually belong to other disorders including apathy, depression and delusional disorder. "Risks associa

Facial Emotion Recognition and Persecutory Ideation in Paranoid Schizophrenia.

The recognition of facial signals has a crucial role in social interaction. It is well known that people suffering from paranoid schizophrenia have problems in the social domain, predominantly related to misinterpreting the intentions, emotions, and actions of others. The aim of this study was to examine whether there are differences in facial emotion recognition between people with paranoid schizophrenia and healthy controls. In addition, we examined the correlation between facial emotion recognition and the expression of persecutory ideation in people suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. T
