BACKGROUND: Drug-induced liver enzyme abnormalities may indicate hepatic injury. Antipsychotic drugs also may cause increase in the liver enzymes and serum bilirubin levels. The present report evaluates the case of a patient with risperidone-associated hepatocellular damage.
CASE SUMMARY: A 19-year-old Caucasian man was admitted to the Department of Psychiatry with paranoid schizophrenia and risperidone was administered in a gradually increasing dose up to 8 mg/day. After 3 weeks of treatment, he experienced asthenia and weight loss. The level of aspartate aminotransferase was 283 IU/L (norma

In the last years, serotonin (5-HT) has been related with the pathophysiology of several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Thus, genes related to the serotonergic (5-HTergic) system are good candidate genes for schizophrenia. The rate-limiting enzyme of 5-HT synthesis is tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the regulatory regions of TPH2 gene may affect gene expression and biosynthesis of 5-HT triggering to various neuropsychiatric disorders related to 5-HT dysfunction. The present study explored the association of SNPs within the TPH2 gene w

Paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors. Occasionally they secrete catecholamines in sufficient quantities to cause symptoms. These may include psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety and depression. We describe a patient with multiple mediastinal paragangliomas and persistently elevated dopamine levels who presented with anxiety and depression. She later went on to develop paranoid schizophrenia, which we feel was coincidental. This case illustrates anxiety and depressive symptoms associated with elevated dopamine and the importance of awareness of psychiatric manifestations of neuroendocr

Anders Behring Breivik carried out a massacre in Norway on July 22, 2011, killing a total 77 persons and leaving 42 others severely wounded. He detonated a bomb in Oslo and then drove to the island of Utøya, where he shot and killed youngsters gathered at a youth camp. The authors performed an analysis of Breivik's writing style in his extensive manifesto which he published hours before the attacks, and also referred to the two psychiatrists' reports. The first report concluded that he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. The authors concurred with the second report. Breivik seemed to be a pe

OBJECTIVE: Dysregulation of dopaminergic neurotransmission at the D1 receptor in the prefrontal cortex has been implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Genetic polymorphisms of the dopamine D1-receptor gene have a plausible role in modulating the risk of schizophrenia. To determine the role of DRD1 genetic polymorphisms as a risk factor for schizophrenia, we undertook a case-control study to look for an association between the DRD1 gene and schizophrenia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We genotyped eleven single-nucleotide polymorphisms within the DRD1 gene by deoxyribonucleic acid sequencin

We report a case of a 41-year-old man suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. The patient has been consulting in our psychiatric hospital since he was 29 years old. Eight years later, he developed kidney failure and required peritoneal dialysis. After more than two years, the nephrology team indicated a renal transplantation and his brother suggested giving his kidney. There were no obstacles for transplantation in the immune and histological compatibilities; the psychiatric staff decided to check the patient's compliance with medication. The patient was compliant to all his medications and to

This article reports the case of a 29-year-old schizophrenic woman without somatic illness in whom switching from olanzapine to aripiprazole induced hiccups. Antipsychotics are thought to be effective in the treatment of hiccups; however, they have rarely been reported to induce hiccups. Within 24 hours of taking aripiprazole, the patient began having hiccups continuously. One week after the hiccups ceased, the patient resumed taking aripiprazole, and the hiccups began again. Although rare, this case study suggests that aripiprazole induces hiccups.

Mrs A, a 68-year-old woman with paranoid schizophrenia, was on long-term psychiatric treatment with long-acting intramuscular zuclopenthixol, quetiapine and alprazolam when, in April 2012, she was diagnosed with right breast infiltrating ductal carcinoma. After starting treatment with letrozole on 4 July, Mrs A progressively developed extrapyramidal symptoms and these were particularly evident after each zuclopenthixol administration. On 9 January, both quetiapine and alprazolam were stopped due to excessive lethargy. After the administration of the last dose of zuclopenthixol on 26 January, s

We describe the development of tubulointerstitial nephritis after starting clozapine therapy in a patient with treatment-resistant schizophrenia. A 54-year-old mixed-race patient with a longstanding history of paranoid schizophrenia was started on the antipsychotic clozapine. Two months after starting clozapine he developed fevers, cough and acute renal failure which initially responded to 7 days of prednisolone but recurred after completing the steroid course. Renal biopsy confirmed acute tubulointerstitial nephritis and he was started on a course of steroids with renal recovery in 72 h. Cloz

The ubiquitin ligase F-box protein 45 (FBXO45) is critical for synaptogenesis, neuronal migration, and synaptic transmission. FBXO45 is included in the 3q29 microdeletion region that confers a significant risk for schizophrenia, as shown by rare structural variant studies. Thus, FBXO45 is considered a prominent candidate for mediating schizophrenia pathogenesis. Here, we investigated rare, deleterious single nucleotide variants (SNVs) as well as small insertions and deletions (INDELs) in FBXO45 that may contribute to schizophrenia susceptibility. Using Sanger sequencing, we performed mutation

BACKGROUND: The relationship between neurocognition and symptomatology in people with schizophrenia has been established. The present study examined whether social cognition could mediate this relationship.
METHODS: There were 119 participants (58 people with paranoid schizophrenia and 61 healthy controls) participated in this study. Neurocognition was assessed by Raven's Progressive Matrices Test, the Judgment of Line Orientation Test, and the Tower of London Test. Psychiatric symptoms in people with schizophrenia were assessed by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. Social cognition wa

The primary aim of the present study was to assess the possible associations between dopaminergic, serotonergic, and glutamatergic system-related genes and adverse events after antipsychotic treatment in paranoid schizophrenia patients. The second aim of the study was to compare the intensity of these symptoms between atypical (ziprasidone and olanzapine) and typical (perazine) antipsychotic drugs. One-hundred and ninety-one Polish patients suffering from paranoid schizophrenia were genotyped for polymorphisms of DRD2, DAT1, COMT, MAOA, SERT, 5HT2A, and GRIK3. The patients were randomized to t

INTRODUCTION: The present study was undertaken to determine if patients with schizophrenia on clozapine monotherapy have lower serum levels of peptide YY [PYY(1-36)], which is an endogenous inhibitor of food intake, comparing to healthy controls.
METHODS: Data for 24 patients (mean age 38.8 years) with paranoid schizophrenia on clozapine monotherapy and 24 healthy subjects (gender- and age-matched; mean age 39.9 years) were analyzed.
RESULTS: Fasting serum levels of PYY(1-36) were lower in the clozapine group (178.4±138.4 vs. 277.4±218.1 pg/mL, p=0.034). In the whole study sample PYY(1-36) l

The study included 47 patients (23 men, 24 women) with ICD-10 diagnosis of attack-like paranoid schizophrenia. Patients were divided into two groups: with- (25 patients) or without (22 patients) a concomitant organic disease. Memory, attention and thinking were assessed with psychometric tests. Inter- and intra-group differences were identified that indicated a considerable impact of a concomitant CNS organic pathology on the development of cognitive impairment in the schizophrenic process and active antipsychotic therapy. The data obtained can be used in the development of a differentiated ap

INTRODUCTION: Niemann-Pick type C disease (NPC) is a rare, neurovisceral, autosomal recessive disease, with an extremely heterogeneous clinical presentation. The adult form of the disease is usually expressed as a neurological form. Non-specific psychiatric symptoms are often associated with NPC. For some cases, it can also be expressed as an isolated psychiatric disorder form. Since 2009, the launching of a medicine called miglustat has helped to improve the disease evolution.
CASE HISTORIES: We report two siblings followed-up in the same department of psychiatry and with an atypical psychot

Wernicke's Encephalopathy (WE) is a preventable neurologic condition characterized by altered mental status, ophthalmoplegia, and ataxia. Although historically associated with alcoholism, a few authors have described WE in patients with non-alcohol related psychiatric disorders. We report herein the case of a 36-year-old young man with paranoid schizophrenia who was brought to hospital for confusion and difficulties with his vision. His roommate said he had gone about thirty days without eating '…because he was on a slimming cure'. History and physical examination suggested WE as a result of i

Schizophrenia (SZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) share deficits in emotion processing. In order to identify convergent and divergent mechanisms, we investigated facial emotion recognition in SZ, high-functioning ASD (HFASD), and typically developed controls (TD). Different degrees of task difficulty and emotion complexity (face, eyes; basic emotions, complex emotions) were used. Two Benton tests were implemented in order to elicit potentially confounding visuo-perceptual functioning and facial processing. Nineteen participants with paranoid SZ, 22 with HFASD and 20 TD were included, aged
