Specificity of jumping to conclusions and attributional biases: a comparison between patients with schizophrenia, depression, and anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: The knowledge of the specificity of cognitive biases in psychiatric disorders is important in order to develop disorder-specific cognitive models and therapies. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the specificity of jumping to conclusions (JTC) and attributional biases (AB) for patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: Twenty patients with paranoid schizophrenia were compared with patients with depression (n=20) and with anorexia nervosa (n=15) and nonclinical controls (n=55). All participants were administered a modified version of the beads task (JTC), a revised German

Paroxysmal Perceptual Alteration: Drug-Induced Phenomenon or Schizophrenic Psychopathology?

Brief and repetitive episodes of perceptual changes, termed paroxysmal perceptual alteration (PPA), have been described in association with antipsychotic treatment. We report a case of paranoid schizophrenia who had such perceptual changes akin to PPA for 15 years, that was not related to antipsychotic treatment. There was a rapid resolution of PPA following treatment with low dose clonazepam.

Common variants in the TPH2 promoter confer susceptibility to paranoid schizophrenia.

Serotonergic system-related genes may be good candidates in investigating the genetic basis of schizophrenia. Our previous study suggested that promoter region of tryptophan hydroxylase 2 gene (TPH2) may confer the susceptibility to paranoid schizophrenia. In this study, we investigated whether common variants within TPH2 promoter may predispose to paranoid schizophrenia in Han Chinese. A total of 509 patients who met DSM-IV criteria for paranoid schizophrenia and 510 matched healthy controls were recruited for this study. Five polymorphisms within TPH2 promoter region were tested. No statisti

[Paranoid schizophrenic patient with unstable spinal fracture].

The misdiagnosis of somatic illness in the psychiatric population can have grave consequences. Somatic symptoms are easily overseen or misinterpreted and a careful history and examination is essential when approaching this group of patients. We report a case of a patient with a history of paranoid schizophrenia, who had her somatic symptoms misinterpreted as being of psychiatric origin. This misinterpretation gave rise to an admission to a psychiatric ward of a patient who actually presented with an unstable spinal fracture.

Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in schizophrenia: -2518A/G genetic variant and protein levels in Armenian population.

Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) has been proposed as a contributory factor in pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The aim of the current study was to explore the possible association of the MCP-1-2518A/G genetic polymorphism and plasma levels of MCP-1 in patients with paranoid schizophrenia. The MCP-1-2518A/G (rs1024611) polymorphism and blood levels of MCP-1 in patients with paranoid schizophrenia and healthy subjects were evaluated and compared. One hundred and three chronic patients with paranoid schizophrenia treated with neuroleptics and 105 healthy subjects were genotyped using

Acute anterior compartment syndrome associated with psychogenic polydipsia.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to describe the association of psychogenic polydipsia with anterior compartment syndrome. METHOD: Case report. RESULTS: A 31-year-old man with glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency had a history of paranoid schizophrenia from age 16 complicated by the use of drugs. Four years after the initial diagnosis of schizophrenia, he developed psychogenic polydipsia. This was complicated by episodic severe acute hyponatraemia with seizures and, on one occasion, by generalized rhabdomyolysis. One episode of severe acute hyponatraemia with delirium led t

Risperidone-induced acromegaly: a case report.

Today, considering their adverse side effects, the first-generation antipsychotics have been replaced by the new-generation antipsychotics (also known as second-generation antipsychotic agents). The superiority of new-generation antipsychotics compared with first-generation antipsychotic agents in terms of side effects, especially movement disorders, are acknowledged by clinicians. But in recent years during the use of second-generation antipsychotic agents, endocrine side effects have been noteworthy. In our study with a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia treated with risperidone for 14 year

Schizophrenia-like psychosis associated with right lacunar thalamic infarct.

Thalamic dysfunction has been associated with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. We describe an adult patient with a lacunar infarct in the posterior region of the right thalamus exhibiting a paranoid schizophrenia-like psychosis as the only clinical manifestation. Neuropsychological assessment showed alterations in visuospatial memory and executive functions at follow up. This case highlights the role of information processing by the thalamus in the development of delusions. We suggest that dysfunction of the right mediodorsal and pulvinar thalamic nuclei disrupts both thalamic sens

Schizophrenia with preserved insight is associated with increased perfusion of the precuneus.

BACKGROUND: Preserved insight into illness has been suggested to be predictive of outcome in patients with schizophrenia. We aimed to investigate the functional substrate underlying preserved insight in these patients. METHODS: We recruited patients with paranoid schizophrenia and healthy controls matched for age and sex. Patients were grouped according to preserved or impaired insight into illness using the Scale to assess Unawareness of Mental Disorder (SUMD). Whole-brain technetium-99m ethyl cysteinate dimer single photon emission computed tomography regional cerebral blood flow was compar

Neuropsychological functioning and social anhedonia: three-year follow-up data from a longitudinal community high risk study.

Social anhedonia is a promising vulnerability marker for schizophrenia-spectrum pathology. Prior research has demonstrated that individuals with psychometrically-defined social anhedonia show a range of "schizophrenia-like" neurocognitive abnormalities. However, this research is limited in that it is based largely on the study of college students. The present article reports findings from a longitudinal study of social anhedonia recruited from a community sample. As part of this study, a neurocognitive battery was administered at baseline and at three-year follow-up sessions to participants wi

Association study of interleukin-4 polymorphisms with paranoid schizophrenia in the Polish population: a critical approach.

Changes in immunological system are one of dysfunctions reported in schizophrenia. Some changes based on an imbalance between Th1 and Th2 cytokines results from cytokine gene polymorphisms. Interleukin-4 gene (IL4) is considered as a potential candidate gene in schizophrenia association studies. The aim of the current case-control study was to examine whether the -590C/T (rs2243250) and -33C/T (rs2070874) IL4 gene polymorphisms are implicated in paranoid schizophrenia development in the Polish population. Genotyping of polymorphisms was performed by using PCR-RFLP technique. The genotypes and

Detection of visual events along the apparent motion trace in patients with paranoid schizophrenia.

Dysfunctional prediction in sensory processing has been suggested as a possible causal mechanism in the development of delusions in patients with schizophrenia. Previous studies in healthy subjects have shown that while the perception of apparent motion can mask visual events along the illusory motion trace, such motion masking is reduced when events are spatio-temporally compatible with the illusion, and, therefore, predictable. Here we tested the hypothesis that this specific detection advantage for predictable target stimuli on the apparent motion trace is reduced in patients with paranoid

Antipsychotic treatment of acute paranoid schizophrenia patients with olanzapine results in altered glycosylation of serum glycoproteins.

Atypical antipsychotic drugs, such as olanzapine, have been shown to alleviate the positive, negative and, to a lesser degree, the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia in many patients. However, the detailed mechanisms of action of these drugs have yet to be elucidated. We have carried out the first investigation aimed at evaluating the effects of olanzapine treatment on the glycosylation of serum proteins in schizophrenia patients. Olanzapine treatment resulted in increased levels of a disialylated biantennary glycan and reduced levels of a number of disialylated bi- and triantennary glycans o

Functional hallucinations in schizophrenia responding to adjunctive sodium valproate.

Functional hallucinations are a rare phenomenon, wherein hallucinations are triggered by a stimulus in the same modality, and co-occur with it. Although hallucinations in schizophrenia are normally treated using antipsychotics, not all patients respond to them. The following is the report of a patient with paranoid schizophrenia who experienced persistent functional hallucinations, triggered by the sound of machines in his factory, in the absence of other psychotic symptoms. These occurred despite adequate doses of risperidone, which had controlled his other symptoms. The addition of sodium va

[Interferon status in the treatment of neuroleptic-resistant patients with paranoid schizophrenia].

We studied 73 patients with paranoid schizophrenia with resistance to neuroleptics. All patients were divided into two groups - basic (37 patients) and comparison (36 patients). Both groups received traditional treatment. Patients of the basic group were treated with the combination of reamberin and cycloferon. Before treatment, significant alterations in the interferon status (IFS), which were characterized by the decrease of serum interferon (SIFN) activity and blood α- and γ-interferons (IFN) levels, were identified in both group. The positive effect of the drug combination on clinical symp

Qualitatively distinct factors contribute to elevated rates of paranoia in autism and schizophrenia.

A converging body of clinical and empirical reports indicates that autism features elevated rates of paranoia comparable to those of individuals with paranoid schizophrenia. However, the distinct developmental courses and symptom manifestations of these two disorders suggest that the nature of paranoid ideation may differ between them in important and meaningful ways. To evaluate this hypothesis, we compared patterns of responses on the Paranoia Scale between actively paranoid individuals with schizophrenia (SCZP), individuals with schizophrenia who were not actively paranoid (SCZNP), adults w

Double-blind placebo-controlled randomized efficacy and safety trial of add-on treatment of dimebon plus risperidone in schizophrenic patients during transition from acute psychotic episode to remission.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that blockade of 5-HT 6 receptors can improve cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenic patients. A number of antagonists of 5-HT6 receptors are in development as cognitive enhancers. One of the agents with relatively strong 5-HT6 activity is dimebon. We tested the hypothesis that this 5-HT6 antagonist administered in the early stage of stabilization after an acute episode can improve both neurocognitive and clinical symptoms in schizophrenia. A phase II study of dimebon as add-on to risperidone therapy was conducted. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 56 male subjects with para
