The aim of this study was to investigate selected measures of creativity in schizophrenic patients and their relationship with neurocognitive executive functions Forty-three inpatients with paranoid schizophrenia who were in symptomatic remission (a total of 60) and 45 healthy control participants were included. Creativity was assessed using the Barron-Welsh Art Scale (BWAS) and the inventiveness part of the Berlin Intelligence Structure Test (BIS). Executive functions were measured by means of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Schizophrenic patients gave responses on the BWAS, had lower

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic effects of all clinically used antipsychotics are related to the reduction of dopaminergic transmission in the limbic system. The aim of present study was two-fold. First, efficacy of atypical drugs (ziprasidone and olanzapine) against schizophrenia symptoms was compared to that offered by a typical antipsychotic medication, perazine. Second, associations between some dopaminergic genes polymorphisms and therapeutic response to antipsychotics were assessed in the same group of schizophrenia patients.
METHODS: One hundred ninety one Caucasian patients admitted with exac

The cholecystokinin type A receptor (CCKAR) gene has been found to be associated with positive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia but the results reported to date are inconsistent. Considering the involvement of allelic heterogeneity in poor replication of the CCKAR finding, we genotyped five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in the 5' putative regulatory region of the CCKAR gene in a Chinese case-control sample and then applied the 5-SNP haplotype analysis to extract allelic heterogeneity information. The results showed that three individual haplotypes were strongly associat

BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH), a prominent symptom of schizophrenia, are often highly distressing for patients. Better understanding of the pathogenesis of hallucinations could increase therapeutic options. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides direct measures of neuronal activity and has an excellent temporal resolution, offering a unique opportunity to study AVH pathophysiology.
METHODS: Twelve patients (10 paranoid schizophrenia, 2 psychosis not otherwise specified) indicated the presence of AVH by button-press while lying in a MEG scanner. As a control condition, patien

Self-mutilation, self-injuring or self-harming behaviour has been defined as deliberate destruction or alteration of body tissue in the absence of conscious suicidal intention. Persons suffering from mental disorder may inflict hundred of small wounds upon themselves which may be added to the actual cause of death. Another recognized syndrome is self mutilation of genitals almost invariably in males suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and often with strong religious flavour to their delusion. Here we present a case of a 35-year-old male who self mutilated his penis due to dependence on canna

INTRODUCTION: Young and late onset patients with paranoid schizophrenia were compared, regarding the initial prodromal and active phases of the disorder, in order to examine the influence of age of onset on the prodromal and active phase symptomatology of the disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 88 consecutively hospitalized patients with paranoid schizophrenia. Age cutoff points were set at <30 years of age for the young, and ≥35 years of age for the late onset group. Diagnoses were made prospectively, using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-Patient Edition for Axis I disor

Impaired perceptual inference has been suggested to be at the core of positive symptoms in schizophrenia. Apparent motion (AM) is a visual illusion in which perceptual inference gives rise to the experience of a single object moving back and forth when two spatially separated objects are flashed in alternation. Here, we investigated the strength of AM perception in patients with paranoid schizophrenia. Patients were less susceptible to the illusion as indicated by a lower probability of motion perception at the individual's optimal presentation frequency for AM. In addition, the probability of

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia show decreased sensitivity towards clinical and experimental painful conditions. To date, the exact underlying mechanisms are not completely understood. One method to examine central integrative processes of pain perception is the thermal grill illusion (TGI), in which interlacing cold and warm bars create the illusion of a painful sensation.
METHODS: In 18 unmedicated patients with acute paranoid schizophrenia, cold and heat pain thresholds (CPT/HPT) as well as the perception of the TGI were examined and compared to 18 matched controls. In addition, sy

In this paper, we reviewed the concept of "elementary phenomena", which was used by K. Jaspers and the French Lacanian school of thought for the differential diagnosis of psychosis. This concept can provide a useful index of schizophrenia (especially paranoid schizophrenia). We psychiatrists can use elementary phenomena as a qualitative index of schizophrenia, not as a quantitative index (as is used by an operational diagnosis system). For Jaspers, elementary phenomena have 5 features: (1) elementary phenomena arise primarily (not deducted by preceding psychical experience), (2) elementary phe

A salience network (SN), mainly composed of the anterior insula (AI) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), has been suggested to play an important role in salience attribution which has been proposed as central to the pathology of paranoid schizophrenia. The role of this SN in the pathophysiology of paranoid schizophrenia, however, still remains unclear. In the present study, voxel-based morphometry and resting-state functional connectivity analyses were combined to identify morphological and functional abnormalities in the proposed SN in the early-stage of paranoid schizophrenia (ESPS). The treatment of choice for acute schizophrenia is antipsychotic drug treatment and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and should only be considered as an option for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, where treatment with clozapine has already proven ineffective or intolerable. The use of ECT as a maintenance treatment for patients with schizophrenia and comorbid epilepsy is uncommon as scant evidence exists to support this. We describe a patient with a serious case of paranoid schizophrenia and comorbid epilepsy who had not responded to typical and atypical antipsychotic medication, but responde

Numerous studies in first-episode schizophrenia suggest the involvement of white matter (WM) abnormalities in multiple regions underlying the pathogenesis of this condition. However, there has never been a neuroimaging study in patients with first-episode, drug-naive paranoid schizophrenia by using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) method. Here, we used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) with TBSS method to investigate the brain WM integrity in patients with first-episode, drug-naive paranoid schizophrenia. Twenty patients with first-episode, drug-naive paranoid schizophrenia and 26 healthy su

Schizophrenia is considered a brain disease with a quite heterogeneous clinical presentation. Studies in schizophrenia have yielded a wide array of correlations between structural and functional brain changes and clinical and cognitive symptoms. Reductions of grey matter volume (GMV) in the prefrontal and temporal cortex have been described which are crucial for the development of positive and negative symptoms and impaired working memory (WM). Associations between GMV reduction and positive and negative symptoms as well as WM impairment were assessed in schizophrenia patients (symptomatology

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, little is known about public recognition and beliefs about treatment of severe mental disorders, both emergent key elements in reducing stigma and the gap of treatment of such patients. It has been proposed that they may be related to gender and perception of patient's aggressiveness and/or dangerousness.
AIMS: To assess mental illness recognition and beliefs about treatment of schizophrenia, and to determine their relationship with perception of patient's aggressiveness/dangerousness and gender of the perceiver in a community sample of Mexico City.

CASE-REPORT: H. had perceived his father as an evil persecutor ever since his adolescence. He developed paranoid schizophrenia of persecution in which his father occupied the main role. Little by little, in his desperate resistance against his father, perceived as his enemy, he acquired such a feeling of prejudice, of violation of his personality, and of impotence that the only way out was to escape in order to survive. At the age of 18, he decides to run away from home and from France to stop suffering. He goes to Canada and later to the USA where he would stay 9 years, during which his madne

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS) is a rare genetic disorder with characteristic physical anomalies. It is characterized by mental retardation, postnatal growth deficiency, microcephaly, specific facial characteristics, broad thumbs, and big toes. Behavioral problems are common with RTS; they include mental retardation, impulsivity, distractibility, instability of mood, stereotypes, poor coordination, atypical depression, and mania. To date, there is lack of literature on the presence of schizophrenia or non-affective psychosis with RTS. Here, we describe two cases where there is co-morbid psych
