Social cognitive psychologists (Frith, 1992; Hardy-Baylé et al., 2003) sought to explain the social problems and clarify the clinical picture of schizophrenia by proposing a model that relates many of the symptoms to a problem of metarepresentation, i.e., theory of mind (ToM). Given the differences in clinical samples and results between studies, and considering the wide range of what is considered to constitute ToM, one must ask if there a core function, or is ToM multifaceted with dissociable facets? If, there are dissociable dimensions or facets, which are affected in patients with paranoid

American journal of medical genetics. Part B, Neuropsychiatric genetics : the official publication of the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics2012eng
Compelling evidence suggests that there is a considerable overlap in structural and functional alternation in the brain between different neuropsychiatric disorders. However, whether these overlaps are specific for schizophrenia has yet to be investigated. A total of 36 patients with paranoid schizophrenia, 43 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 44 healthy controls were recruited to undergo resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) for analysis of regional homogeneity (ReHo). Twelve regions of interest (ROIs) in the frontal and temporal lobes were generated a

BACKGROUND: Different environmental factors are thought to be responsible for 15-20% of schizophrenia pathogenesis. Religion has long been considered a major force in human life, regardless of economic, social or political affiliation. How the perception of religion has changed over time, especially in the context of mental illness, was the focal point of this long-term comparative study.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A random selection of 100 case histories from the years 1932, 1952, 1972 and 1992 was selected. By reviewing the subject history and medical notes, information on the presence of religi

The hypothesis for the etiology of schizophrenia involves various neurotransmitters, including 5-HT. Metabolic disorder of 5-HT is an important underlying neurobiochemical cause leading to the development of mental illness. Abnormality in the receptors involved in 5-HT synthesis and metabolism may affect the functioning of 5-HT in the central nervous system. There are seven types of 5-HT receptor families, with a total of 15 corresponding subtypes. HTR1A is the most abundantly expressed 5-HT receptor subtype in the mammalian brain. SNPs in HTR1A enhance or weaken the functioning of 5-HT by aff

The prevalent sociocultural belief about the psychoses and schizophrenia is that intensive psychoanalytic therapy is ineffective if not destructive and contraindicated, and that the treatment of choice is a combination of psychopharmacology and educational techniques designed to provide symptom relief and rehabilitation. The literature contains few detailed reports of successful intensive psychotherapy that might contradict these beliefs. The psychoanalytic psychotherapy of a woman I shall call Sara, who met DSM criteria for chronic paranoid schizophrenia, is presented in detail. Its success i

We have developed a biochip for the analysis of candidate genes for schizophrenia. Using this biochip, allele and genotype frequencies for the polymorphisms of HTR2A, BDNF and SLC6A4 genes in 198 patients with schizophrenia and 192 healthy individuals have been obtained. The allele T of the HTR2A polymorphism rs6314 was identified as protective against the development of paranoid schizophrenia (p=0,014). An analysis of gene-gene interactions using the Multifactor-Dimensionality Reduction (MDR) algorithm has shown a statistically significant association of combined genotypes rs6311 G/-, rs6313

In the early 19th century, Lombroso introduced the concept of hereditary taint to describe the coexistence of 'madness' and creativity. In a recent investigation, Rust et al reported a study designed to test the traditionally assumed relationship between creativity and schizophrenia. They uncovered an association between creative originality and the positive cognitive aspects of schizotypal thinking. Poetry is not only the 'product' of psychopathology but it can also be utilised as a form of therapy: "My name is David Holloway, I am a 33 year old poet/blogger with paranoid schizophrenia. A poe

Schizophrenia is a chronic debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder with complex etiopathology. Growing evidence suggests a significant role of chronic low grade inflammation in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Multiple immunological, genetic polymorphism and gene expression studies have established crucial roles of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines in the immune-mediated risk of schizophrenia. Although genetic studies suggest some variants within the pro-inflammatory IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α genes conferring risk to schizophrenia, the results however have been contradictory in various popul

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the population genetic data of 3 SNP loci (rs25533, rs34388196 and rs1042173) of 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter (5-HTT) gene and the association with paranoid schizophrenia.
METHODS: Three SNP loci of 5-HTT gene were examined in 132 paranoid schizophrenia patients and 150 unrelated healthy individuals of Northern Chinese Han population by PCR-RFLP technique. The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium test was performed using the chi-square test and the data of haplotype frequency and population genetics parameters were statistically analyzed.
RESULTS: Among these three SNP loc

Iloperidone, a piperidinyl-benzisoxazole derivative, is structurally related to risperidone and approved for treatment in acute stage of schizophrenia. Iloperidone is usually considered as a prolactin sparing atypical antipsychotic thereby offering treatment advantage. We aim to present the first reported case of iloperidone-induced hyperprolactinemic galactorrhea in a middle-aged female. A middle-aged female with the diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia was treated with iloperidone up to a dosage of 8 mg/day. Three months after starting the medicine, patient developed galactorrhea for which no

Certain cytokines have been identified in the peripheral blood as trait markers of schizophrenia, while others are considered relapse-related state markers. Furthermore, data from peripheral blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and nuclear imaging studies suggest that (1) blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction (e.g., immigration of lymphocytes into brain tissue and intrathecal antibody production) correlates with the development of negative symptoms, while (2) the brain's mononuclear phagocyte system (microglial cells) is activated during acute psychosis. Based on these neuroinflammatory hypotheses

PURPOSE: MicroRNA-122 (miR-122) has recently been shown to represent a novel biomarker of liver disease. However, the presence of serum miR-122 after liver injury was mostly studied at singular time points. The course of serum miR-122 was determined at consecutive time points during the onset of disease.
METHODS: Fulminant hepatitis was induced by a high-copper diet in Long-Evans Cinnamon (LEC) rats that were used as models for Wilson's disease (WD). Levels of serum miR-122, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), bilirubin, and liver histology were determined.

This article focuses on John Nash, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994, and subject of the Award winning 2001 film A Beautiful Mind, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1958 at the age of 29. After presenting an account of the emergence, course, and eventual remission of his illness, the article argues for the relevance of his contribution to game theory, known as the Nash equilibrium, for which he received the Nobel Prize, to research studies of the schizophrenic brain and how it deviates from the normal brain. The case is made that the Nash equilibrium is descripti

Historically, many cases of demonic possession have masked major psychiatric disorder. Our aim is to increase awareness that symptoms of schizophrenia are still being classified as demonic possession by priests today. We report the case of a 28-year-old patient who had been diagnosed 5 years previously with paranoid schizophrenia (treated with clozapine, risperidone, ziprasidone and onlanzapine without a complete response) and was also receiving treatment in a first episode psychosis unit in Spain. The patient was led to believe by priests that her psychotic symptoms were due to the presence o
