The group of 60 paranoid schizophrenics and pair-matched group of 60 healthy controls were studied. The level of activation was measured by LPT technique by R. E. Thayer, and J. An historical crisis movement from the highlands of Papua New Guinea re-examined from a psychiatric point of view raises the possibility that the two leaders suffered from mental disorder. The principal prophet apparently had paranoid schizophrenia. As a middle-aged man he established the cult which spread rapidly in the Enga area in the 1940s at the time of first contact with outsiders. A surviving brother, who had also been an important figure in the movement, suffered a similar illness--an example of shared psychotic disorder or folie à deux.

Previous studies have suggested that arylsulphatase A (ASA - the biochemical marker of metachromatic leucodystrophy) deficiency may be present in a sizeable proportion of patients with chronic psychosis. Using the Ego-Strength Scale by F. Barron, the Scale for Self-acceptance by A. J. Brzezinski, and Delta Questionnaire by R. Drwal, 206 paranoid schizophrenic in-patients and 126 healthy controls were studied. The study showed the weakness of feelings of identity among paranoid schizophrenics while the level of self-acceptance and the sense of control did not differ among groups studied.

Following a review of the research literature on the psychophysiological effects of cocaine, a study is described of a group of 120 cocaine addicts. Of the 120 patients, 10 (8.33%) exhibited fleeting, unformed, organic delusions and hallucinations. Case reports of the 10 cases are presented. The quality of the adverse subjective effects of cocaine is emphasized, and the differential diagnosis between Cocaine Delusional Disorder and Paranoid Schizophrenia is discussed. Guidelines for a more accurate differential diagnosis are provided.

The computed tomographic scans of 12 patients with Capgras syndrome and 12 matched controls were blindly assessed. A variety of statistical comparisons between the two groups consistently showed that patients with Capgras syndrome had significantly more bilateral frontal and temporal lobe atrophy. Capgras syndrome may be associated with dysfunction of these areas. Two groups of male patients were investigated: 19 subjects with diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and 13 with schizoaffective psychosis (8 with both depressive and paranoid symptoms, 5 with manic and paranoid). All patients were treated with perazine in this same manner. During the consecutive stages of therapy the following parameters were examined and compared: clinical symptoms, DBH activity, plasma prolactin concentration and the simple reaction time task to auditory and visual stimuli. The noticeable changes, similarities and differences were described.

The subjects were 21 paranoid schizophrenic patients (10 women, 11 men). The average duration of illness was 4.5 years. The severity of psychopathological symptoms was evaluated using BPRS-LA before and on 7 and 21 day of trifluoperazine therapy (60 mg per os). A total of 105 patients admitted to a psychiatric admissions service for adults were screened for pathological gambling using the South Oaks Gambling Screen, a valid, reliable instrument for identification of this disorder. Analyzed were 1999 courses of treatment in 212 patients with paroxysmal and paranoid schizophrenia. Twelve groups of side-effects were defined according to syndromal and structural principles. Compared to the uncomplicated schizophrenic patients, the ones with organic cerebral insufficiency had higher sensitivity to psychopharmacologic drug therapy. Free amino acid content was measured in the blood serum in patients with permanently progressive paranoid schizophrenia under conventional insulin shock therapy. The influence of several amino acids (methionine, glutamic acid) preinjection on their base levels was also assessed. Metabolic response to the insulin coma was different in preinjected vs. control groups. Glutamine acid-preinjected patients displayed less pronounced shifts in amino acid reserves in the blood serum that smoothed the shock-related metabolic stress in these patients as related to conventional shock.

Golgi technique was applied to the study of autopsied brain stems of mentally sane subjects and patients with paranoid schizophrenia. The geometry of neurons in magnocellular reticular nucleus was morphometrically assessed. Spiral-like primary dendrites were found and the orientation of secondary dendrites changed. In schizophrenic patients the cross-sectional area of neuronal soma, maximal radius of dendritic field, total dendrites length, the dendritic area span were decreased, and the dendrites' waviness increased.
