Substrate-typic changes of platelet monoamine oxidase activity in sub-types of schizophrenia.

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity has been measured in the platelets of controls (n = 42) and schizophrenic patients (n = 49) of three subtypes, using beta-phenylethylamine, p-tyramine, and tryptamine as substrates. Characteristic differences of MAO activity were observed between platelets of patients and controls; the differences were substrate-typic: decreased enzyme activity was found with all three substrates in platelets of the parnaoid subtype. With tryptamine, MAO activity was decreased in the platelets of all three sub-types of schizophrenia. With p-tyramine, MAO was low in patients wit

Homicidal aggression in schizophrenic men.

In a sample of 205 hospitalized schizophrenics, 59 men were found who made verbal threats to kill or physical attacks some time during their illness. All homicidal aggression occurred during active phases of psychosis, typically in a setting of acute excitement and in recurrent illnesses. Paranoid diagnoses were overrepresented. Closely related females were the prime targets, suggesting a resentment of dependence on a woman. An impersonal, compulsive urge appears to be the motivating force leading to physical attacks.

Changes in visual evoked potentials of schizophrenics after addition test.

Visual evoked potentials were obtained for schizophrenics, neurotics and patients with affective disorders, and comparison between those before and after an addition test for 15 min was made. Reduction in amplitude and prolongation of latency of the potential were observed in schizophrenics after the test, while there was no change after that in neurotics and patients with affective psychosis. In schizophrenics, 4 types of changes in amplitude of the potential could be seen after the test. Namely, marked reduction occurred in A1 (A1 type), in A3 with fast recovery (A3f type), in A3 with slow r

A description of Walter Reed Army Medical Center's in-patient psychiatric service population 1973 to 1975.

A three-year evaluation of demographic and diagnostic patterns in a large Army psychiatric in-patient facility is described. Active duty personnel accounted for 83.6 percent of patient episodes. No simple catchment area could be defined for this facility. Active duty patient episodes tended to be with younger, junior enlisted men whose sicknesses were most frequently diagnosed as schizophrenia. The diseases of blacks were diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenia more frequently than in whites. Latent schizophrenia or undifferentiated schizophrenia were diagnosed more frequently in whites than in bl

[Delusions of self-justification, innocence, forgiveness and justification in schizophrenia].

Delusions of selfjustification directed towards a denial of imaginary guiltiness are characterized by an activity of delusional speech and behaviour. In delusions of innocence the patients partially acknowledge imaginary guiltiness, their opinions and behaviour are passive. These forms of delusions are encountered in the structure of depressions with delusions, paranoid-depressive, hallucinatory-paranoid, acute delusional and paraphrenic syndromes. Delusions of appeal and justification are frequently seen in the structure of paraphrenic syndromes. These forms of delusions occupy a subordinate

Does phenylethylamine cause schizophrenia?

The model psychosis associated with amphetamine overdosage is known to bear a close resemblance to acute paranoid schizophrenia. Amphetamine is chemically similar to the endogenous sympathomimetic amine, phenylethylamine, which possess many of its pharmacological properties. It is suggested that some cases of schizophrenia may be associated with an abnormal phenylethylamine response, either from increased concentrations of the amine or from abnormal receptor sensitivity to it.

Psychiatric aspects of murder and attempted murder.

The clinical data and forensic aspects of 28 individuals charged with murder and 10 charged with attempted murder examined over the last 35 years are recorded. The majority of those aged 40 years or over were criminally insane. A positive family history of psychiatric illness was present in the majority of the criminally insane group. Murder and attempted murder in the setting of a stable marriage was almost invariably the result of serious psychiatric illness. After the clearcut cases of schizophrenia and depressive illness were separated there were left a mixed paranoid group and a large gro

Electroconvulsive therapy in Ibadan.

An analysis of the result of administering electroconvulsive therapy (E.C.T.) to 292 patients suffering predominantly from psychosis and depression is presented. The results show that the courses of E.C.T. administered range from three to twenty-five. The most frequently administered course was six to eight. Favourable response to treatment was reported in all diagnostic groups immediately after completing the course but less so in cases of depression and paranoid schizophrenia. The reasons thought to account for this were discussed. It is concluded that there is need for careful selection of

Cannabis psychosis and paranoid schizophrenia.

The initial clinical symptoms of 25 consecutive cases of cannabis psychosis of the paranoid type and 25 consecutive cases of paranoid schizophrenia were studied and compared, in order to delineate features that would enable a differentiation of the two conditions. It was observed that the patients with cannabis psychosis substantially differed in terms of behavioral manifestations. Most of these patients were violent and panicky and demonstrated bizzare behavior, but they possessed some insight into the nature of their illness. Schizophrenic patients manifested these disturbances and character

Appropriate and background affect in facial displays of emotion. Comparison of normal and schizophrenic males.

The hypothesis that normal subjects can express emotions more accurately than schizophrenics was tested by having judges match photographs of five posed affects with five emotion words for each of 16 normal and 16 schizophrenic male expressors. Discrimination accuracy was high, but the hypothesis was not confirmed. The results of a second study, in which separate measures of appropriate (intended) and "background" affect (eg, the rated intensity of anger displayed in a subject's nonangry poses) were provided, supported our expectation that discrimination accuracy is a function of both appropri

The Capgras phenomenon.

The underlying diagnosis of Capgras delusion is not found to be exclusively paranoid schizophrenia, nor is the sex exclusively female, as once was believed. Organic factors play a predominant role in many patients, and 41% of the cases are males. The age at diagnosis in those considered to be schizophrenic is older than is usually expected.

The relationships of the process/reactive, paranoid/nonparanoid, length of illness, and length of hospitalization dimensions to schizophrenic abstract thinking deficits.

Attempts to determine whether the quality of schizophrenic thought disorder varies from one type of schizophrenic to another in earlier studies have been hindered by the contamination of the major individual difference dimensions with each other. In the project described here, partial correlations were run between each of two abstraction deficit measures (Proverbs Test Abstract Level and Autism scores) and four independent variables which represent dimensions commonly used as criteria in individual differences research in schizophrenia--Ullmann-Giovannoni Process-Reactive scores, the MMPI Para

Effects of chronic d-amphetamine on social behavior of the rat: implications for an animal model of paranoid schizophrenia.

Hooded rats in a social colony were given increasing daily doses of d-amphetamine up to 8 mg/kg. Time-lapse 16 mm cinematographically recorded behavior was analyzed for the following: grooming, feeding, sex, sleeping, resting, sterotypy, agonistic behavior, muricidal activity, and the location and movement of each rat. Subordiant rats receiving d-amphetamine actively withdrew from social interactions by retreating to strategically defensible locations in the environment. They remained hypervigilant of other rats and overreacted to their approaches by either fleeing or by defensively rearing an

Schizophrenic patterns of dichotic shadowing performance.

This study sought to utilize dichotic shadowing tasks in the investigation of differences between schizophrenics and controls and, secondarily, between paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenics. Sixteen subjects from each of four diagnostic groups--paranoid schizophrenics, nonparanoid schizophrenics, psychiatric controls, and normal controls--were tested in dichotic shadowing under one of two instructional conditions ("ignore the left ear" or "listen to both ears"). Schizophrenics made more errors with distraction, showed poorer ?recall of target material than did controls, and were abnormally i

Dopamine and schizophrenia.

The antipsychotic actions and extra-pyramidal side-effects of neuroleptic drugs are strongly correlated with their ability to block central dopaminergic transmission. It is argued that the former are more closely related to actions on dopaminergic mechanisms in the "mesolimbic dopamine" system, and the latter to similar actions in the striatum. Although the amphetamine psychosis closely resembles paranoid schizophrenia and may be due to excess dopamine release, clinical, biochemical, and endocrine studies suggest that dopaminergic overactivity is not a necessary concomitant of schizophrenic il

[Comparative study of 2 groups of paranoid syndromes appearing at different ages].

Clinical study of two groups of females beyond age of 65, institutionalized for delusional manifestations of schizophrenic nature and presenting also, at the time of examination, a pronounced paranoid state. In the first group: the manifestations had arisen before the age of 45. In the second group, after the age of 65. This study has demonstrated certain psychopathological characteristics suggesting the presence of personality problems definitely more profound in patients of the first group: autistic state, asthenia, thought disorder, incoherence and vagueness of delusional subjects, ordinari
