[Disintegration of condition episodes of paranoid behavior. "Nonsensical actions" according to Conrad].

Proceeding from an interactional basis - psychopathology practized as interactional psychophology - the insenate acts as defined by Conrad are interpreted as an expression of decay of situation. As the stage the paranoid undergo teaches a stabilisation and a preleminary end by the decay of situation, it is - in difference to Conrads interpretation - a matter of a comparatively remote period of progress. The thematically open, e.g. not defined situation of the paranoid, experiences a consolidation through the decay of situation by making it possible for the patient to come to a renewed settleme

Nonpsychotic personality disturbances: a re-evaluation and reclassification.

The classical notion of neurosis as the prototypical form of nonpsychotic personality disturbance must be rejected in favor of the categories of (a) personality pattern disturbance and disorder of life style, and most especially, (b) character disorder. Category (a) would include schizoid, paranoid, and cyclothymic personality pattern disturbances and compulsive and hysteroid personality as disorders of life style. Each of these would occupy one end of a 'psychotoid' continuum, at the other end of which would be a familiar type of psychosis such as paranoid schizophrenia or pseudoneurotic schi

Suicide attempted by self-immolation.

The authors found that 14 individuals who had attempted suicide by self-immolation all had psychiatric illness (most were psychotic), and many had religious preoccupations. There was a reversal of the usual male to female ratios for burn injury and for successful suicide--all 5 completed suicides were women. Although self-immolation as social protest was widely publicized during the years surveyed, the authors note that these individuals all attempted suicide for personal and irrational rather than morally idealistic reasons.

Dopaminergic mediation of the interoceptive cue produced by d-amphetamine in rats.

After rats were trained to differentiate between the effects of d-amphetamine and saline in a state-dependent task, pretreatment with the tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor, alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine, significantly decreased amphetamine discrimination. Pretreatment with the dopamine-beta-hydroxylase inhibitor, disulfiram, or with the tryptophan hydroxylase inhibitor, p-chloro-phenylalanine, was observed to have no effect on the rats' ability to discriminate d-amphetamine. Administration of haloperidol, a selective dopamine receptor blocker, completely abolished the amphetamine discrimination, wherea

[Experiments on perception in schizophrenia (author's transl)].

Acute and chronic schizophrenic subjects were tested with 6 simple experimental tasks of visual stimulus selection. The 2 control groups were a group of non-psychiatric subjects and one of patients with other psychiatric diagnoses. The 6 experimental tasks represented three different types of attention: 1) differentiation between "figure" and "background", 2) concentration; 3) visual integration (Gestalt completion). The main result was that the acute group with paranoidal psychosis and hallucinations made significantly more mistakes in figure-background differentiation (grouping of patterns).

The mental health of Jehovah's Witnesses.

The function of religion in human society is complex. The part played by religion in psychiatric disorders is even more obscure. Previous literature and theories are divided into two groups: one school believes that intense religiosity is a symptom-complex indicative of psychiatric disorder, while the opposing view is that religious belief in some way acts as a defence mechanism protecting the individual and his psyche. The present study of 50 Jehovah's Witnesses admitted to the Mental Health Service facilities of Western Australia suggests that members of this section of the community are mor

Persecutory delusions: a cybernetic model.

The authors propose a cybernetic model for the formation and maintenance of persecutory delusions. During the formation of persecutory ideation, the threat of loss of control over the self or others interacts with predictions of control from others. This interaction may result in feelings of alien control followed by persecutory explanations. Since the persecutory explanations provide the individual with a new goal of resisting others' influence in order to prevent being controlled, they reduce the threat of loss of self-control. This is how persecutory delusions are maintained.

Erotomania or de Clérambault syndrome.

De Clérambault focused attention on a syndrome in which a woman has the delusional belief that a man, usually of higher social status and considerably older, is much in love with her. If the patient's romantic ideas shaped private fantasies instead of determined public behavior, there would be little cause for concern. The situation becomes critical when the fantasies are dramatized in real life with an unsuspecting and usually unwilling man cast in the role of the lover. The woman dwells on the feelings she ascribes to her "suitor." Such delusional thinking, resulting from an ego defect and p

High dosage piperacetazine (Quide) in ambulatory schizophrenic patients--therapeutic efficacy and toxicity.

Indications for high dosage neuroleptics have become increasingly more debatable with recent emphasis on outpatient community management of the severely ill schizophrenic patient. Early studies suggest that high dose neuroleptics have greater effectiveness with some schizophrenic patients while remaining low in toxicity. As part of a rater blind study, 16 patients with the diagnosis of either chronic undifferentiated or chronic paranoid schizophrenia were placed on standard dose piperacetazine following a washout period. The dosage was then gradually increased until the patient achieved maxima
