Deep vein thrombosis on the fourth day of risperidone therapy.

Deep vein thrombosis has been recognised as a complication of antipsychotic treatment and is reported to be more common with atypical antipsychotics. Risperidone is a second-generation atypical antipsychotic and there have been case reports of risperidone-associated deep vein thrombosis, most of them reporting the complication from 2 weeks to a few months of initiation of therapy. Here, we are reporting a case of deep vein thrombosis in a male patient in his early forties with paranoid schizophrenia, which presented on the fourth day of starting risperidone therapy. This case is being reported

Clinical validation of ratings on the six-item Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale obtained via the Simplified Negative and Positive Symptoms Interview.

BACKGROUND: The six-item version of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS-6) has shown promise as a brief measure of the severity of core symptoms of schizophrenia. However, since all prior analyses of the PANSS-6 were based on data extracted from studies using the full 30-item PANSS (PANSS-30), it remains unknown whether it is possible to obtain valid information for the PANSS-6 ratings via a brief interview, such as the Simplified Negative and Positive Symptoms Interview (SNAPSI). AIMS: We aimed to validate the PANSS-6 ratings obtained via the SNAPSI using the PANSS-6 scores extra

NGS-based mtDNA Profiling Could Reveal Genetic Alterations in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a complex disease with a putative genetic background. It was hypothesized that impaired mitochondrial function due to genetic alterations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) could contribute to neurological conditions, including mental disorders. The aim of the study was to find out possible pathogenic mutations and/or variants in mtDNA potentially related to schizophrenia development. OBJECTIVE: The study involved 37 patients with paranoid schizophrenia, whose mtDNA profiles were compared to those of 23 healthy controls. METHODS: Patients and controls were assessed usi

Tailored intervention to prevent relapses and hospitalization in a migrant suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.

Adherence issues combined with inequitable access to healthcare may increase the risk of discontinuation of care for undocumented migrants with severe mental health illness. An Ethiopian man with paranoid schizophrenia who relapsed several times after hospitalization was identified by a humanitarian outreach team in Brussels. The team built a relationship with him by offering him access to services including accommodation and mental health care. A treatment buddy was identified to support him adhering to his treatment and accompany him while hospitalized. Effective collaboration between Medeci

Loxapine in patient with clozapine-resistant psychosis.

Clozapine is recognized as the drug of choice for treatment-refractory schizophrenia, but use may be limited because of strict monitoring requirements and adverse effects including severe neutropenia, seizures, and myocarditis. Loxapine is a first-generation antipsychotic with similarities to clozapine in both structure and receptor binding. This case describes a 57-year-old male with a history of severe paranoid schizophrenia despite treatment with clozapine and other psychotropic agents, who experienced clinical improvement after a cross titration from clozapine to loxapine. Loxapine may be

Executive Functions Influence on Memory Process in Patients with Paranoid Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorders with and without Psychotic Symptoms. A Pilot Study.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether declarative memory deficits are related to executive function deficits (EF), since they could be a consequence of a poor organization of the material to memorize. This interaction between both cognitive processes can be studied simultaneously in a single task such as the Test of Memory Strategies (TSM). 23 patients with paranoid schizophrenic disorder, 11 with bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms, 13 with bipolar disorder without psychotic symptoms and 15 healthy subjects were evaluated with the TSM; with the memory test Texts A an

Caffeine-Induced Severe Erosive Esophagitis.

Caffeine is one of the most frequently used stimulants worldwide. It is, therefore, subject to frequent intentional and unintentional misuse. However, severe erosive esophagitis due to acute caffeine overdose is extremely rare. We report the case of a 43-year-old male with a past medical history of paranoid schizophrenia admitted to our hospital with esophageal symptoms (throat pain, retrosternal chest pain, dysphagia/odynophagia, nausea, and vomiting) two days after ingesting a bottle of caffeine pills containing about 30 g of caffeine in a suicide attempt. He was found to have rhabdomyolysis

In recent years, research has increasingly focused on inflammatory processes as a trigger for psychiatric illnesses. Contrary to previous suggestions, clinical pictures with psychiatric features only also can occur, leading to erroneous diagnoses and treatments. We describe the case of a patient who was initially diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia on the basis of the clinical presentation. Antipsychotic treatment was frequently discontinued by the patient also due to inadequate response. After intensifying the diagnostic procedures autoimmune thyroiditis oft he Hashimoto type was detected in the
