Catatonia is a psychiatric emergency in schizophrenia that often leads to excessive activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Urinary retention in catatonia is often underestimated but has potentially detrimental consequences. Herein, we present the case of a woman in her 40s with schizophrenia treated for catatonia during a relapse. When treated as an inpatient, the patient suddenly complained of severe abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed a spontaneous rupture of the posterior wall of the bladder, requiring emergency repair surgery in the urology department. The patient was readm

Tachy-brady syndrome is the result of sinus node dysfunction (SND), an electrocardiographic phenomenon caused by defective pacemaker functioning that leads to alternating arrhythmias. We present a case of a 73-year-old male with multiple mental health and medical comorbidities who was admitted to the inpatient floor for catatonia, paranoid delusions, refusal to eat, inability to cooperate with activities of daily life, and generalized weakness. Upon admission, a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) showed an episode of atrial fibrillation with a ventricular rate of 64 beats per minute (bpm). During

Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterised by altered movement, speech, and behaviour. Clozapine is an established therapy for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, but its role in catatonia has not been systematically examined. In this systematic review, we aimed to assess the evidence for clozapine as a treatment for catatonia. Full text original research articles in English where at least one patient with catatonia was treated with clozapine were included, provided catatonia did not occur solely in the context of neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Results were tabulated with calculati

Catatonia has been defined by ICD-11 as a nosologically unspecific syndrome. Previous neuropsychiatric conceptions of catatonia such as Wernicke-Kleist-Leonhard's (WKL) one, have isolated chronic catatonic entities, such as progressive periodic catatonia (PPC) and chronic system catatonias (CSC). This study aimed at comparing the clinical and neuropsychological features of PPC, CSC and non-catatonic patients, all diagnosed with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD). The clinical and cognitive measures were compared among 53 SSD patients, first by separating catatonic (C-SSD, n = 27) and non-

Monoamine oxidases are mitochondrial enzymes that catalyze the oxidative deamination of biogenic amines (adrenaline, noradrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine), causing their inactivation and subsequently playing a fundamental role in the homeostasis of various neurotransmitters. As the regulation of these effects was deemed important in clinical practice, numerous modulators of these enzymes were tested for various clinical effects. The purpose of this paper is to present a few historical landmarks regarding monoaminoxidase inhibitors and their usefulness as psychopharmacological agents. We will

Older people exhibit dysregulated innate immunity to respiratory viral infections, including influenza and SARS-CoV-2, and show an increase in morbidity and mortality. Nanoparticles are a potential practical therapeutic that could reduce exaggerated innate immune responses within the lungs during viral infection. However, such therapeutics have not been examined for effectiveness during respiratory viral infection, particular in aged hosts. Here, we employed a lethal model of influenza viral infection in vulnerable aged mice to examine the ability of biodegradable, cargo-free nanoparticles, de

BACKGROUND: GAD65 autoimmunity is reported to be associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, there has been no evidence that glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) autoantibodies in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are associated with akinetic catatonia in schizophrenia patients.
METHODS: We report the case of a 28-year-old man who underwent diagnostics including brain MRI, neuropsychological testing, and electroencephalography (EEG) as well as a tumor search via CT of the abdomen and thorax, as well as colonoscopy and gastroscopy. For clinical characterization, his patient files we

OBJECTIVE: There is conflicting evidence in recent literature about whether the incidence of schizophrenia is increasing or decreasing. A role for prenatal and early childhood viral infections in the aetiology of schizophrenia has also been debated. We examined the incidence of schizophrenia and the catatonic subtype of schizophrenia over a 30-year period in Finland. We also investigated whether the incidence rate of the catatonic subtype of schizophrenia was linked to changes in exposure to viral infection (polio and measles) during the prenatal or infant period.
METHODS: Persons with schizo

BACKGROUND: Only a small proportion of schizophrenia patients present with catatonic symptoms. Imaging studies suggest that brain motor circuits are involved in the underlying pathology of catatonia. However, data about diffusivity dysregulation of these circuits in catatonic schizophrenia are scarce.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the involvement of brain motor circuits in schizophrenia patients with catatonia.
METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was used to measure white matter signals in selected brain regions linked to motor circuits. Relevant DTI data of seven catatonic schizophrenia patient

Dermatoglypic patterns are extensively investigated to apply in disease-related risk assessment due to an obvious association between morphological and genetic characteristics. In the current study, we aimed to determine whether the fingerprint and palmar patterns vary between case population with schizophrenia and general population. A cross sectional study was conducted in people diagnosed with schizophrenia (cases) and a control population between 2016 and 2019. In this study, 252 people were participated. Ink and paper method was used to evaluate the difference of fingerprints palm prints

This is a case report of a 42-year-old patient, who was admitted to hospital with clinical pneumonia. The only positive test result was for SARS-CoV-2. After a few days of treatment, the patient was discharged in stable condition for isolation at home. The patient had previously had contact with the mental health services and was diagnosed with catatonic schizophrenia but had been without outpatient contact or treatment for the last four years. After seven days he was admitted in a state of severe psychosis. This begs the question if the psychotic relapse was triggered by a neuroinflammatory r

Catatonia is a severe psychomotor syndrome that frequently occurs in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Accumulating neuroimaging evidence suggests orbitofrontal, frontoparietal and cerebellar network dysfunction in catatonia. Very little is known about contributions of brainstem regions (as part of the dopaminergic-based subcortical-cortical motor circuit) to catatonia in SSD patients. Here, we used structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 3 T to examine volumes of brainstem regions in catatonic SSD patients compared to non-catatonic SSD patients. Catatonia severity w

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was first experienced in 1938 and had been conducting without anesthesia for 30 years. In this study, the most common indication for ECT was mood disorder (major depressive disorder and bipolar I disorder). We introduce a patient with a history of COVID-19 and suicide who required emergency ECT. Electroconvulsive therapy can be life-saving in patients with suicide history or catatonic schizophrenia. Health workers are at the front line of the COVID-19 outbreak control and must follow health instructions. Aerosol-producing procedures such as suction in anesthesia

OBJECTIVE: An analysis of inflammatory and autoimmune markers in schizophrenic patients with- and without catatonic symptoms in comparison to healthy controls.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sample of 170 patients with paranoid schizophrenia was stratified by the presence of catatonic symptoms in the structure of psychosis (66 patients with catatonia and 104 patients without catatonia), inclusion threshold was >10 points on the Bush-Francis catatonia scale. The examination was carried out in the early days of inpatient treatment using psychopathological, psychometric and immunological methods.

Background: Catatonic phenomena such as stupor, mutism, stereotypy, echolalia, echopraxia, affective flattening, psychomotor deficits, and social withdrawal are characteristic symptoms of both schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), suggesting overlapping pathophysiological similarities such as altered glutamatergic and dopaminergic synaptic transmission and common genetic mutations. In daily clinical practice, ASD can be masked by manifest catatonic or psychotic symptoms and represent a diagnostic challenge, especially in patients with unknown or empty medical history. BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a complex and debilitating mental disorder with strong heritability. Its pathogenesis involves immune dysregulation. Interleukin 15 and interleukin 15 receptor alpha(IL-15Rα) are classical immune molecules. They also help maintain normal brain function, leading to our hypothesis that IL-15Rα gene(IL- 15RA) variants contribute to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.
OBJECTIVE: We determine whether the genetic variants of IL-15RA are associated with the development and progression of schizophrenia and whether IL-15RA single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) plays a key rol
