Delusion of pregnancy: Case series.

Delusion of pregnancy is a relatively uncommon manifestation in psychotic patients. Differentiating it from closely related clinical entities like pseudocyesis/pseudopregnancy can be a challenge in clinical setting. Diagnosis of a psychotic illness with delusional pregnancy as the presenting feature in the absence of other florid symptoms of psychosis is a different challenge altogether. Currently, there is no consensus on the pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy of delusional pregnancy. We present a case series on delusional pregnancy with the intent to answer some of these gaps in the literatur

[EMDR in delusional disorder and substance use disorder: integrated treatment].

Recently, a patient was admitted to our department, who reported personality disorder symptoms and a cannabis use disorder. Additionally, a delusional disorder, aggression regulation issues and PTSD were classified. After employing CBT for substance use, the Hero Without Violence module and EMDR, the treatment was completed. Integrated treatment in this patient proved successful regarding the PTSD, aggression regulation problems and SUD. With the described case, the authors hope to provide a clear description of the possibilities of integrated treatment for a patient with complex problems.

A combined tropical medicine and psychiatry approach to patients with possible delusional infestation.

BACKGROUND: Delusional infestation (DI) is a well-recognized delusional disorder presenting as the persisting belief of being infested. Combined clinics have been run by dermatology and psychiatry in a small number of centres. In this article we focus on our Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust clinic hosted at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK, where we run a specialist clinic for DI. METHODS: We describe the specific set-up and approach of our clinic as a guide for clinicians working in specialties likely to see patients with DI (including tropical medicine, infec

Dangerous Intersection of Alcoholism and Othello Syndrome: A Comprehensive Review of Delusional Jealousy and Treatment Strategies.

The modern pace of life, increased susceptibility to stressors, and easy access to psychoactive substances have contributed to the increase in the number of people addicted to alcohol. Alcoholism has serious and life-threatening consequences, one of which is brain damage causing morbid jealousy, otherwise known as Othello syndrome. The disease, currently classified as a subtype of delusional disorder, manifests itself in groundless and dangerous judgments about a partner's sexual infidelity. People with Othello syndrome constantly believe in their partner's infidelity despite inadequate eviden

Genetic overlap between schizophrenia spectrum disorders and Alzheimer's disease: Current evidence and future directions - An integrative review.

Schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are distinct neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive cognitive deficits and structural alterations in the brain. Schizophrenia typically emerges in adolescence or early adulthood with symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and cognitive impairments, whereas AD primarily affects elderly individuals, causing progressive memory loss, cognitive decline, and behavioral changes. Delusional disorder, which often emerges later in life, shares some features with schizophrenia and is considered a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Patients w

Assessing the Readability and Comprehensibility of Online Patient Educational Materials for Common Psychotic Disorders.

Background In our age of technology, millions of people use the Internet daily for health-related searches and guidance, both patients and caregivers alike. However, health literacy remains notably low among U.S. adults, and this issue is particularly critical for individuals with severe mental illnesses. Poor health literacy is often linked to low socioeconomic status and correlates with adverse patient outcomes and limited healthcare access. With the average reading level of the U.S. adult at the eighth-grade level, guidelines recommend health information be written to match. This study focu

Delusional Parasitosis in Comorbidity With Shared Paranoid Disorder in a Marriage.

Delusional parasitosis is a psychotic disorder where the patient has the delusion of being infested with some insect or parasite. In contrast, shared paranoid disorder or folie à deux is described when the same delusions affect two or more closely related people. It is common for these two situations to cause comorbidity in the family unit. This case report concerns a couple married for 37 years. The husband described that 2 years ago, he began with a tingling sensation throughout his body, related to the presence of parasites coming out from all his body orifices, with no evidence of self-har

From Psychiatric Care to Dermatologic Dilemmas: A Case Report of Risperidone-Induced Bullous Pemphigoid.

The patient, a 64-year-old male with a history of delusional disorder, first experienced symptoms of suspicion toward his spouse at age 34. He was treated with psychotropic drugs for two years, leading to complete symptom remission and discontinuation of medication. After years of stability, delusions resurfaced two years ago. Amisulpride was ineffective, and risperidone was started but led to itching and plaques on his thighs, which evolved into fluid-filled and hemorrhagic lesions. Diagnosed with bullous pemphigoid (BP) via skin biopsy, he received corticosteroids, dapsone, and antibiotics.

[An individual approach to the diagnosis and treatment of an acute psychotic condition in a patient with a multiple sclerosis].

Acute psychotic states develop in 2-3% of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). At the stage of differential diagnosis, between the organically caused and endogenous nature of psychotic disorders, it is necessary to take into account their connection with the period of exacerbation of the disease, the presence of mental disorders during the period of remission and before the development of MS, the possibility of a reaction to pulse therapy with corticosteroids and antipsychotics. The article presents a case with an emphasis on the features of diagnosis and drug treatment of an acute psychotic

Towards the DSM-6: The intersection of OCD and psychosis. Expert perspectives on insight in the diagnosis of OCD.

In 1994, the DSM-IV added the specifier "with poor insight" to the diagnostic criteria of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The DSM-5 went one step further and now allows clinicians to diagnose OCD "with absent insight/delusional beliefs," thereby blurring the long-standing distinction between OCD and psychosis. The present study surveyed OCD experts as to their opinions on the insight specifier and the future classification of OCD. The final sample comprised 60 OCD experts, with a subgroup of 35 experts with verified identity and at least 6 years of clinical and/or research experience ("ve

Induced erotomania by online romance fraud - a novel form of de Clérambault's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Although the impact of internet usage on mental health is extensively documented, there is a notable scarcity of reports in the literature concerning internet-induced erotomania. Erotomania is a rare and likely underdiagnosed delusional disorder. It is characterized by an irrational belief held by the affected persons that someone of higher socioeconomic status harbor romantic feelings toward them. Here, we describe the psychopathology of erotomanic delusion induced by online romantic fraud in a female patient. Employing this case as a focal point, we illuminate novel aspects of er

Clinical Reasoning and Challenges Faced With Onset Psychotic Symptoms in a Case of Combined Huntington's Disease and Gayet-Wernicke Encephalopathy.

Physicians are occasionally confronted with patients presenting psychotic symptoms of organic origin. Therefore, precision in diagnosing the organic basis is pivotal for targeted treatment, addressing the underlying etiology. This case study delineates the nuanced phases of clinical reasoning employed to ascertain a diagnosis of Huntington's disease (HD), notably amidst concurrent alcohol dependence. A comprehensive clinical examination and meticulous review of the patient's medical history served as linchpins in guiding subsequent investigations toward identifying the etiological underpinning

Postpartum Depression and Inflammatory Biomarkers of Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio, Platelet-Lymphocyte Ratio, and Monocyte-Lymphocyte Ratio: A Prospective Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a severe mental health disorder affecting a significant proportion of mothers, often undiagnosed and untreated, with potential long-term effects. While numerous studies have identified risk factors for PPD, the relationship between inflammatory markers and PPD remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the potential correlation between indirect inflammatory markers, specifically neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and the risk of developing PPD, assessed by the Edinburgh Pos
