Global Adversities, the Media, and Mental Health.

Global communities are currently confronted with a number of complex problems and threats, the reality of which is amplified by the media. These environmental and socio-political stressors have been accompanied by the spread of problematic psychological and behavioural tendencies, such as the growing polarisation of opinions and values, online radicalisation and extremism, deepening xenophobia and nationalism, the proliferation of irrational beliefs and conspiracy theories, and resistance to rational public policy measures. Here we argue that although they fall outside the scope of psychopatho

A Case of Delusional Parasitosis With Folie à Deux Treated With Low-Dose Quetiapine.

A patient with a three-month history of persistent delusions of infestation presented to the emergency department with suicidal ideation secondary to complaints of worsening pruritus. Routine investigations failed to disclose any underlying organic cause for her pruritic sensations. The patient ascribed these to a parasitic infestation acquired following a brief stay at her maternal aunt's residence. Following a thorough psychiatric assessment and collateral history obtained from her aunt, it became clear that both the patient and her aunt held similar delusions of infestation. Her aunt was fo

Induced delusional disorder: A case series.

Phenomenon of induced delusional disorder has a relatively long, controversial history of conceptualization. It is a rare entity and goes undiagnosed mostly as only the primary partner is brought to clinical attention. We present a case series of induced delusional disorder with different presentations. For effective management, understanding the dynamics of relationship shared by the partners and addressing the biopsychosocial factors are crucial. Failure to adhere to treatment poses additional challenge in these cases.

Folie a deux in monozygotic twins with childhood trauma: A case report.

Folie a deux is a rare syndrome characterized by induction of a delusion in a susceptible person in close proximity with an individual with known delusional disorder. We report a rare case of monozygotic twins with induced delusional disorder in one of the twins. The twins had experienced childhood trauma in the form of emotional neglect and physical abuse by the father. The primary case (Twin A) was diagnosed with delusional disorder and was treated with oral antipsychotic. The secondary case (Twin B) showed resolution of symptoms after separation from twin A. The case highlights the unique p

Isotretinoin-Induced Delusional Disorder, Somatic Subtype.

Isotretinoin, an active form of vitamin A, is the drug of last resort for the treatment of severe acne. Depression, suicidal ideation, and psychosis are among the most well-documented psychiatric side effects. Here, we report a case of isotretinoin-induced psychosis, which was diagnosed as delusional disorder somatic subtype, in a young male in the absence of any prodromal symptoms, previous psychiatric history, or family history of mental illness. The onset of psychosis was in the context of a dosage increase from 40 mg/day to 80 mg/day. Isotretinoin was discontinued, and the patient showed i

[Psychotic disorders in ICD-11: the revisions].

Psychotic disorders in ICD-11: the revisions Abstract. This article provides an overview of the main changes to the chapter "Schizophrenia or Other Primary Psychotic Disorders" (6A2) from ICD-10 to ICD-11 and compares them with the psychosis chapter of DSM-5. These changes include abandoning the classical subtypes of Schizophrenia as well as of the special significance of Schneider's first-rank symptoms, resulting in the general requirement of two key features (one must be a positive symptom) in the definition of "Schizophrenia" (6A20) and the allowance for bizarre contents in "Delusional Diso

Post-Finasteride Syndrome: An Induced Delusional Disorder with the Potential of a Mass Psychogenic Illness?

Post-finasteride syndrome (PFS) has been claimed to occur in men who have taken oral finasteride to treat either hair loss or benign prostatic hyperplasia, independent of age, dosage, or indication. By definition, the condition is characterized by sexual dysfunction, somatic symptoms, and psychological disorders that persist after cessation of finasteride treatment. As yet, the condition is not recognized by the medical community, although individuals who suffer from PFS present with relatively homogenous symptoms. The concept of PFS has emerged from reports of non-dermatologists, neuroendocri

Shared Psychotic Disorder (Folie À Deux): A Rare Case with Dissociative Trance Disorder That Can Be Induced.

BACKGROUND: Shared psychotic disorder was first introduced in the 19th century in France with the name Folie à deux. Since then, the concept of Folie à deux has been developed and produces several subtypes in France. In DSM, this disorder is called Shared Psychotic Disorder, and in ICD-10, it is called Induced Delusional Disorder. However, some of the classic subtypes of Folie à deux are not included in the above categories. CASE REPORT: We found a case of shared psychotic disorder between a 38-year-old male inducer, a Batak tribe with two female recipients, 34 and 36 years from the Batak tri

Folie à Deux and its interaction with early life stress: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Folie à deux is a very rare psychiatric syndrome in which a psychotic symptom is transmitted from one individual to another. We present a case of folie à deux occurring during childhood, which is not an usual presentation of this syndrome. In this case, the disorder is correlated with child abuse and neglect, which possibly had a role in the development of the symptoms in our case. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of folie à deux between an "induced" 9-year-old black Brazilian boy and the "inducer", his grandmother. They were found to be sharing similar auditory and visual hal

Shared psychotic disorder with sexual delusions.

Shared psychotic disorder (SPD) is perceived as a relatively rare and poorly understood psychiatric phenomenon. Patients sharing sexual delusions may refer to sex therapists looking for treatment of an alleged sexual pathology. This might cause significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The aim of this article was to discuss diagnostic and management difficulties of SPD with special interest in patients sharing sexual delusions. PubMed selective search was provided for publications with keywords including SPD, induced delusional disorder, folie à deux, and induced psychosis. One case i

Folie à deux and shared psychotic disorder.

Folie à deux (FAD) was first described in 19th century France. Since then, the concept has been elaborated, and several subtypes of FAD have been successively reported in France. In contrast, studies in German-speaking psychiatry mainly focused on the conceptual boundary between reactive/endogenous psychosis and etiological hypothesis (ie, psychogenesis vs genetic predisposition). In North America, Gralnick wrote a seminal review and redefined four subtypes of FAD by adopting the European classical concepts. More recently, "shared psychotic disorder" in DSM or "induced delusional disorder" in

[Folie à deux: update of an old concept regarding two cases].

INTRODUCTION: Folie à deux or induced delusional disorder is a rare mental disorder. It was initially described by the French Lasègue and Falret in 1877. Two subjects, who live in a close relationship, in isolation, share delusional ideas based on the same themes. Various classifications exist. Its epidemiology remains unclear, because most of the data have been extrapolated from case reports. CASE REPORTS: In this paper, we describe and comment two cases of shared paranoid disorder: in the first case report, a husband shares the paranoiac delusion of his wife; the second case report describe

Folie à deux.

Folie à deux is defined as an identical or similar mental disorder affecting two or more individuals, usually the members of a close family. Two case reports of this condition are presented with a brief review of the literature. Prompt recognition of this condition is an essential step in the management. The majority of patients with folie à deux require multiple treatments including separation, antipsychotics, individual and group psychotherapy, and family therapy.

Folie a trois in a multilevel security forensic treatment center: forensic and ethics-related implications.

Shared (Induced) Delusional Disorder commonly occurs in close relationships and involves a varying number of participants who may be nonconsanguineous. The disorder has been associated with forensic and fatal consequences. Its occurrence in three nonrelated, incarcerated individuals is described in this article. This case of folie à trois has forensic implications and raises several questions of ethics that relate to autonomy, confidentiality, safety, and risk estimation. The presentation, management, and outcome of the patients suggest that a high index of suspicion is needed to detect cases

Protective effect of melatonin on random pattern skin flap necrosis in pinealectomized rat.

One of the most widely used self-assessment inventories of coping is the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The aims of the study were to describe coping with illness-related problems in persons with muscular diseases and to investigate the influence of demographic variables. Also, the reliability of the Swedish version of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire was to be evaluated. Forty-four persons with muscular dystrophy and 32 persons with postpolio syndrome, along with a comparison group of 214 students, completed the questionnaire. The findings of this study show that there are some different copin

Induced delusional disorder. a review of the concept and an unusual case of folie à famille.

Induced delusional disorder (or shared paranoid disorder), also known as folie à deux, is a fairly uncommon disturbance characterized by the presence of similar psychotic symptoms in two or more individuals. Most often the symptoms are delusional. Usually the 'primary' case, i.e. the individual who first develops psychotic symptoms, can be distinguished from one or more 'secondary' cases, in whom the symptoms are induced. We discuss the concept of shared paranoid disorder and consider various aetiological, clinical and diagnostic issues related to the disturbance. We also describe a case of fo
