Diversity of bartonellae associated with small mammals inhabiting Free State province, South Africa.

The prevalence and diversity of bartonellae infecting the blood of 10 small mammal species inhabiting nine Nature Reserves of the Free State province, South Africa, was assessed using phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic methods. Of 86 small mammals sampled, 38 animals belonging to five different species yielded putative bartonellae. Thirty-two isolates were confirmed as bartonellae and were characterized by comparison of partial citrate synthase gene (gltA) sequences. Phylogenetic reconstructions derived from alignment of these sequences with those available for other bartonellae indicated

Cat-scratch disease: historic, clinical, and pathologic perspectives.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) initially was described in 1931, but the etiologic agent (Bartonella henselae) was not elucidated until decades later. This disease is the most common cause of chronic lymphadenopathy among children and adolescents, characteristically manifesting as subacute regional lymphadenitis with an associated inoculation site due to a cat scratch or bite, often accompanied by fever. The hallmark histologic lesion is granulomatous inflammation with a central stellate microabscess. Numerous atypical manifestations of CSD have been described, and these often lack the characteristi

Acute hemiplegia associated with cat-scratch disease.

Cat scratch disease (CSD) is an infectious illness caused by a Gram-negative rod named Bartonella henselae. Typical CSD is characterized by a small skin lesion at the site of a scratch or a bite, followed by regional lymphadenopathy, one to two weeks later. Atypical forms may present as ocular manifestations, neurological manifestations, hepatosplenic involvement and vertebral osteomyelitis. Among neurological complications, encephalopathy is by far the most common. Other neurological manifestations are very rare. We report a case of an 11-year-old boy, with a posterior cervical lymphadenopath

Infectious exanthems and unusual infections.

Invasive disease due to group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) can be divided into 3 categories of disease: streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (strepTSS), necrotizing fasciitis, and other invasive GABHS disease. Patients with strepTSS may have multiorgan failure within hours of presentation. Clindamycin and penicillin G should be used in combination for treatment of invasive GABHS disease. The mortality rate for menstrual staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome has decreased with early recognition and treatment, and removal of hyperabsorbent tampons from the market. Kawasaki syndrome (KS) is

Homologous protection but lack of heterologous-protection by various species and types of Bartonella in specific pathogen-free cats.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is caused by Bartonella henselae, and possibly by B. clarridgeiae. In immuno-compromised persons, B. henselae is one of the agents causing bacillary angiomatosis. Domestic cats are the main reservoir of these bacteria, which are transmitted primarily from cat to cat by fleas. Possible strategies to prevent the spread of infection among cats are to eliminate flea infestation or to prophylactically immunize cats. In order to develop an appropriate vaccine, it is important to determine if cats become resistant to re-infection by the same strain or various types or specie

Bartonellosis and human immunodeficiency disease (AIDS): L-forms as persisters, activating factors, and mechanism of disease.

Bartonella, genus Proteus, can cause immunodepressive disease. The organisms, in parasitized red blood cells, may invade the brain and every other system and space in the human body. Bartonella henselae is proposed to have a role in the pathogenesis of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) encephalopathy. Bartonella bacilliformis produces two known toxins that can induce spasm and angiomatosis, respectively, and manifest as diseases associated with symptomatic AIDS. The skin lesions of bartonellosis may be mistaken clinically and histologically for Kaposi's sarcoma. Bacteria of the genus P

[Rickettsioses: the epidemiological assessment].

Microbe of taxonomical families Rickettsiaceae aceal and Bartonellaceae of Rickettsiales order have caused not less than 14 nosological forms of disease among people in different parts of the world. About 8 of them--in Russia and in the former Soviet Republics. These diseases are not unequivocal from epidemiological point of view. Trench, Marseilles and other forms of fever, murine typhus, vesicules rickettsia, etc. have been liquidated and never recurred for 30-40 years. Prowazek's [correction of Provachek's] rickettsia in its two forms has lost its epidemiological meaning in Russia and is ne

The expanding spectrum of Bartonella infections: II. Cat-scratch disease.

Recent advancements and developments in molecular biotechnology have allowed more precise reclassification of many microorganisms. With the use of these new taxonomy tools, several organisms previously thought to belong to other genera have been recently described as bartonellae. Of the 11 organisms now described as Bartonella spp., only four have been shown to be pathogenic for humans. Table 1 lists the four Bartonella human pathogens along with the their known epidemiology and the scope and range of disease associated with each. All are now considered to be bacteria and can be grown on blood

Use of Bartonella antigens for serologic diagnosis of cat-scratch disease at a national referral center.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella henselae (formerly the genus Rochalimaea) has recently been isolated from patients with cat-scratch disease and their cats, and since September 1992 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has offered an indirect fluorescent antibody assay for Bartonella-specific antibody. METHODS: Physicians submitted serum samples from patients suspected of having cat-scratch disease or other Bartonella-associated illness and completed a questionnaire that recorded clinical information. Indirect fluorescent antibody assay was performed with the use of antigen derived from three

Angiogenic process in bacillary angiomatosis.

Eight cases of cutaneous bacillary angiomatosis related to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome were studied by light and electron microscopy and by immunohistochemistry with a panel of antibodies specific for endothelial and histiocytic markers. Light microscopy showed an inflammatory reaction with florid neovascularization and clusters of Warthin-Starry-positive bacilli. In addition, solid areas of spindle cells were also present that in some cases mimicked Kaposi's sarcoma or other sarcomas. The investigation focused primarily on the spindle cell areas and the angiogenic process present in ba

On the discriminatory value of anti-HPCA-1 (CD-34) in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant cutaneous vascular proliferations.

The staining pattern of monoclonal antibody anti-HPCA-1 (CD-34) was studied in 95 cases of benign and malignant cutaneous vascular proliferations and compared with other vascular endothelium-associated antigenic markers in paraffin-embedded tissues. The proliferating vessels in 22 cutaneous capillary hemangiomas, 8 lobular capillary hemangiomas, and 1 case of papillary intravascular endothelial hyperplasia stained strongly positively for anti-HPCA-1, and the intensity of the reaction was paralleled by that of factor VIII-related antigen (FVIII), Ulex europaeus lectin-1 (UEA), and vimentin (VIM

Abscess-forming granulomatous lymphadenitis: histological typing of suppurative granulomas and clinicopathological findings with special reference to cat scratch disease.

In order to clarify the histological and immunohistochemical characteristics of suppurative granuloma in abscess-forming granulomatous lymphadenitis (AGL), and the relation between AGL and cat scratch disease (CSD), 36 cases of AGL were studied. The combined results showed that there were two types of suppurative granulomas. The suppurative granulomas histologically revealed small lymphocytes of predominantly T cell phenotype distributed among the epithelioid histiocytes bordering central necrotic areas in the suppurative granulomas. These suppurative granulomas could be further subdivided int

Atypical large plasma cells in lymph node granulomas in cat-scratch disease.

A histological variant of plasma cells found in the granulomas of cat-scratch disease (CSD) lymphadenitis is reported. Though the lesion shows the typical features of suppurative granulomatous lymphadenitis, many atypical giant cells which have abundant basophilic cytoplasm and bizarre nuclei with occasional multinucleated forms are noted among epithelioid histiocytes. The diagnosis of CSD lymphadenitis was confirmed by comparing clinical; histopathological, and histochemical (Warthin-Starry silver impregnation stain) studies on lymph node sections from five cases with features typical of the

Enzyme immunoassay of antibody to Rochalimaea quintana: diagnosis of trench fever and serologic cross-reactions among other rickettsiae.

Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) tests were used to diagnose trench fever and to determine cross-reactions of Rochalimaea quintana with other rickettsiae. The results were compared with those obtained by counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE). All sera from cases of primary or relapsed forms of trench fever were positive both in EIA, with serum antibody titers of 1:20-1:640, and in CIE, giving one to three precipitin lines. Sera from patients with other rickettsial infections were also tested for reactivity with R. quintana antigen: typhus group (Rickettsia prowazekii, Ricketsia mooseri), 15 sera; spotted
