Molecular genetic influences on sustained attention and executive processes and their links with psychopathology in the AFFECT study.

Both sustained attention (SA) and executive functioning (EF) are critical for adaptive behavior and compromised across a range of psychiatric disorders, yet their etiological relationships remain underexplored. Here, we report the first multivariate characterization of molecular genetic influences on SA (vigilance, lapse recovery cost, lapse propensity) and EF (processing speed, response selection, working memory). In collaboration with 23andMe, we report previously unpublished genome-wide association studies of these phenotypes in a single cohort of more than 20,000 individuals enriched for d

High accuracy of passive monitoring for detecting hypomanic symptoms in bipolar disorder: an explainable machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: When trying to intervene early to prevent manic episodes, clinicians are hindered by patients underreporting their symptoms as they are becoming hypomanic or manic (i.e., emerging symptoms). Continuous passive monitoring using wearable technology offers a potential solution to address this problem by capturing behavioral signals that do not depend on self-awareness. However, its clinical utility requires validation before implementation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether passively collected wearable data can detect hypomanic symptoms using an explainable machine lear

Exploring the association between brief evaluation of psychosis symptom domains and HbA1c in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia have an elevated burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but the relationship between psychiatric symptom domains of schizophrenia and glycemic status has been less well established. This study aimed to investigate the association of clinical factors with HbA1c in this population, particularly focusing on Brief Evaluation of Psychosis Symptom Domains (BE-PSD), a symptom scale easy to use in routine clinical practice. METHOD: This retrospective observational study included patients aged 18 years or older with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder

Self-Rated Health Trajectories Among Adults Aged 51-64 Years at Baseline: A 10-Year Group-Based Trajectory Analysis Informed by Roy's Adaptation Model.

IntroductionUsing Roy's Adaptation Model, this study identified self-rated health (SRH) trajectories among late middle-aged adults and examined baseline (Wave 5) factors associated with trajectory-group membership.MethodsThis secondary analysis used Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging waves 5-10 (2014-2024). Group-based trajectory modeling was applied to 2,680 adults aged 51-64 years with at least three valid SRH responses; 428 participants lacking a valid integrated longitudinal weight (for complex-samples analyses) were excluded, yielding a final subsample of 2,252 for multinomial logistic re

Idiographic Item Response Theory: Modeling Person-Specific Differential Item Functioning in Intensive Longitudinal Data.

Idiographic theories of psychological measurement emphasize that the relationships between item responses and a latent trait may vary across individuals, yet typical item response theory (IRT) models assume item parameters are constant across persons. We propose an IRT approach for modeling person-specific (idiographic) heterogeneity in item functioning in intensive longitudinal data. We extend the two-parameter logistic IRT model to allow item location parameters to vary across individuals through person-by-item interaction random effects. We apply a Bayesian estimator to estimate item-specif

Trajectories of Resilience and Depression and Associations with Hope Between Discharge and 12 Months Post-Discharge after Acquired Neurological Injury.

The hospital-to-home transition is a heightened period of psychological vulnerability after acquired brain injury (ABI) and spinal cord injury (SCI), during which individuals draw on internal resources such as resilience to cope. However, the stability of resilience during the first 12 months post-discharge is largely unknown. This study aimed to examine trajectories of resilience and depressive symptoms and associations with levels of hope during the first 12 months post-discharge after ABI and SCI. Individuals with ABI and SCI were recruited between June 2023 and July 2024 from specialist in

A Digital Tool for Culturally Responsive Reflection and Case Conceptualization in First-Line Services to Support Children With a Refugee Background: Development and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, over 117 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide, 40% of them children. Refugee children are at higher risk for posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety, while professionals may struggle to address mental health and trauma-related concerns across unfamiliar cultural contexts. The Psychiatry Assisting the Culturally Diverse Community in Creating Healing Ties (PACCT) approach supports culturally responsive care for culturally diverse families, but first-line professionals often lack practical support to apply such an approach in routine care. The relationship between spiritual orientation and post-traumatic stress symptoms and menopausal symptoms in climacteric women living in a post-earthquake container city.

In this study, we aimed to examine the relationships among spiritual orientation, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and menopausal symptoms in climacteric women living in a post-earthquake container city. This analytical cross-sectional study, using a descriptive and correlational approach, included 240 women. A weak negative correlation was found between spiritual orientation and the depression subscale of the Traumatic Stress Symptoms Scale, whereas a moderate positive correlation was found between traumatic stress symptoms and menopausal symptoms and their subscales (p < 0.001). Higher spirit

Safety and efficacy of high-current tTIS targeting left sgACC for major depressive disorder: A randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability, and non-invasive stimulation of deep brain circuits such as the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC) remains challenging. This randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial recruits 96 adults with moderate-to-severe MDD who received 10 sessions of 2 mA low-current, 15 mA high-current, or sham transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS) targeting the left sgACC. The high-current group shows significantly greater reductions in depressive symptoms (17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [HDRS-17] score) post-tr

Sex-dependent habenular dysregulation across the continuum of stress exposure and depression severity: A systematic review of preclinical and clinical evidence.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is diagnosed at roughly twice the rate in women as in men, yet sex is still routinely treated as a covariate rather than a biological variable of primary interest in depression research. The habenula (Hb), particularly the lateral habenula (LHb), is an increasingly implicated substrate of depression, but two recent systematic reviews found sex-stratified habenula data sparse and reported sex effects inconsistent in direction. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether sex-related effects on habenula structure and function are patterned by stress intensity or c

AI-Assisted Analysis of Sentiment Changes Among Repeat Users of Digital Peer Support: A Retrospective Longitudinal Study.

Background: Digital peer support (DPS) is a scalable tool to provide emotional support across diverse user populations. Previous studies were limited to single-session outcomes, while the impact of repeated DPS sessions is not well understood. Objectives: This study evaluated sentiment trajectories among repeat users of a 24/7, anonymous, real-time moderated DPS service and examined whether DPS engagement across repeated sessions was associated with changes in negative sentiments (depression, loneliness, despair, grief, and work-related stress). User engagement patterns across different conver

Aberrant amygdala subregion volumes in youth at high risk for bipolar disorder predict antidepressant-induced adverse events.

Youth with familial risk for bipolar disorder (BD) and current depression/anxiety are vulnerable to antidepressant-induced adverse events (AE), including mania. The amygdala, implicated in the pathophysiology of mood disorders, may play a key role in these AE. 105 youth with at least one first-degree relative with BD-I and a current depressive/anxiety disorder (high-risk) and 51 healthy controls (HC) underwent baseline MRI to investigate neurostructural risk factors for antidepressant-induced AE. High-risk youth were randomized to either psychotherapy plus escitalopram or psychotherapy plus pl

Anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients with acute ischaemic stroke and cognitive dysfunction: a retrospective single-center study.

Anxiety and depressive symptoms may coexist with cognitive dysfunction after stroke. This study characterized their frequency and severity during acute stroke hospitalization in patients with documented cognitive dysfunction. We conducted a retrospective, single-center study of 95 adults with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) and cognitive dysfunction in Romania during 2024-2025. Anxiety and depressive symptoms were derived from neuropsychological conclusions and classified as absent/minimal, mild, moderate, or severe. In the main analysis, "elements" and the depression-specific "tendency" were cla

Social Support Modifies the Pain-Disability Relationship in Degenerative Spine Disease: Evidence From the PROGRES Study.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain from degenerative spine disease is the main contributor to years lived with disability globally. Although social support is a multifaceted construct with both health-promoting and potentially deleterious effects on chronic pain, whether perceived social support modifies the pain-disability relationship in lumbar degenerative spine disease remains unclear. We hypothesised that social support level would modify the pain-disability association, with distinct predictor patterns of disability emerging for low- versus high-support patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional
