Cohorts of immature Pteropus bats show interannual variation in Hendra virus serology.

Understanding the drivers of seasonal disease outbreaks remains a fundamental challenge in disease ecology. Periodic outbreaks can be driven by several seasonally varying factors, including pulses of susceptible individuals through births, changes in host behaviour and social aggregation and variation in host immunity. However, when these potential drivers overlap temporally, isolating their relative contributions to outbreak patterns becomes challenging. We studied Hendra virus, a zoonotic pathogen with seasonal spillovers from bats to horses and humans. Multiple seasonal factors have been hy

Manipulating vector transmission reveals local processes in Bartonella communities of bats.

Infectious diseases result from multiple interactions among microbes and hosts, but community ecology approaches are rarely applied. Manipulation of vector populations provides a unique opportunity to test the importance of vectors in infection cycles while also observing changes in pathogen community diversity and species interactions. Yet for many vector-borne infections in wildlife, a biological vector has not been experimentally verified, and few manipulative studies have been performed. Using a captive colony of fruit bats in Ghana, we conducted the first study to experimentally test the

Longitudinal assessment of immune responses against Bartonella henselae in experimentally infected cats.

This study investigated the relationship between innate and adaptive immunity in B. henselae-positive cats by assessing the B. henselae-specific immune markers and bacteremia levels. Five cats were infested with Bartonella-carrying fleas to mimic natural infection, while three healthy cats served as uninfected controls. Blood samples were collected over 12 weeks to evaluate bacterial load from whole blood, TLR-4, TLR-9, IL-10, and TNF-α expression in PBMCs using qPCR, as well as IgM and IgG titers and CD4/CD8 profiles via immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. All experimentally infected cats

Sonographic Evaluation of an Inguinal Bubo from Bartonella henselae: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency physicians can use point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to identify lymph nodes in certain clinical scenarios, and advanced users can determine significant information (such as concerns for malignancy or differentiating them from abscesses for incision and drainage) based on a large volume of literature and images associated with those pathologies. However, current literature does not contain a similar volume of images and cases of suppurative lymph nodes, or buboes, limiting the ability to make the diagnosis sonographically at the bedside. CASE REPORT: We report on a man

Tick-Borne Co-Infection in Lyme Disease: Clinical Impact, Diagnostic Challenges, and Therapeutic Perspectives.

Tick-borne co-infections are an increasingly recognized and clinically important aspect of Lyme borreliosis, particularly in regions where Ixodes ticks transmit a wide range of bacterial, protozoan, and viral pathogens. In addition to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, these ticks frequently harbor microorganisms such as Babesia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia spp., Borrelia miyamotoi, Bartonella spp., and several tick-borne viruses. Co-infections may increase disease severity, prolong symptom duration, and contribute to atypical or overlapping clinical presentations, thereby complica

First report of multiple infection by Anaplasma platys, Bartonella henselae, and hemoplasmas in clinically healthy domestic cats from Southern Brazil.

Hemoparasitoses in domestic cats are increasingly recognized as an emerging challenge for veterinary medicine and public health due to their subclinical persistence and zoonotic potential. This study aimed to detect Anaplasma platys, Bartonella henselae, and hemotropic mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma haemofelis [Mhf] and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum’ [CMhm]) in clinically healthy cats from Pelotas, southern Brazil, using molecular assays. A total of 151 blood samples collected between 2022 and 2024 were analyzed by conventional and nested PCR. Detection rates were 21.9% (33/151) for (A) platys,

Diversity, Host Attachment Preferences and Role of Tick Rhipicephalus microplus in the Transmission of Bartonella spp. and Rickettsia spp. in Cattle From Southern Benin.

INTRODUCTION: Ticks, particularly Rhipicephalus microplus, are major blood-sucking ectoparasites of livestock, causing considerable economic losses both through their direct pathogenic effects and their role as vectors of infectious agents. However, tick diversity, host association and pathogen carriage remain insufficiently documented in Southern Benin. This study investigated tick species composition, anatomical attachment preferences, host breed associations and the molecular detection of selected bacterial pathogens in six municipalities of Southern Benin. METHODS: Ticks were collected fr

Molecular survey of tick-borne pathogens in Otobius megnini from Central Mexico with special emphasis on Bartonella detection.

Soft ticks (Argasidae) remain among the least studied hematophagous ectoparasites. One of these species, Otobius megnini, the spiny ear tick, is a widely distributed, likely Nearctic-origin species whose global spread has been facilitated by the movement of cattle and horses-its primary hosts. Despite its generalist habits and ability to parasitize a wide range of mammals, including livestock and companion animals from the orders Artiodactyla and Carnivora, its role as a potential vector of pathogens remains poorly understood. Previous studies have linked O. megnini to otitis and tissue damage

Individual activity of forest rodents correlates to pathogen communities.

Animal personality influences organismal interactions and individual habitat use. Rodents are zoonoses reservoirs and often exposed to several pathogens simultaneously, potentially resulting in interdependence of infections and susceptibility to infection. Still, entire pathogen communities are rarely investigated, even though, given rodents ubiquity in human settlements, understanding the link between animal personality and pathogenesis is an important public health issue. We investigated the association of animal personality with pathogen communities in wild rodents, analysing ectoparasite o

Culture-Negative Infective Endocarditis Presenting as ANCA-Positive Glomerulonephritis.

BACKGROUND Infective endocarditis is challenging to diagnose when blood cultures are negative, and its symptoms are nonspecific. Bartonella species are fastidious intracellular bacteria that can cause culture-negative endocarditis and immune-mediated complications such as glomerulonephritis, often mimicking ANCA-associated glomerulonephritis. CASE REPORT A 25-year-old man who underwent a Ross procedure for congenital aortic stenosis performed in childhood presented with 1 month of night sweats, abdominal pain, and intermittent nausea. Initial evaluation revealed elevated creatinine, pancytopen

The Coinfection of Bartonella spp. and Hantavirus in Wild Rodent and Shrew Species in Eastern China.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella spp. are Gram-negative bacteria that cause diseases including endocarditis, lymphadenopathy, and neuroretinitis. Hantavirus (HV), belonging to the family Hantaviridae, induces illnesses such as hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Both pathogens exhibit host specificity-defined as a preference or restriction to specific host species or ranges. Rodents and shrews are primary hosts for these pathogens, and their high coinfection rates often indicate elevated risk of human exposure. To our knowledge, however, data on Bartonella spp.-HV co

Phlebotomine sand fly fauna characterization and Bartonella bacilliformis DNA detection in Pintomyia (Pifanomyia) robusta at the Ecuador-Peru frontier.

Phlebotomine sand flies are blood-sucking dipterans widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas and are important vectors of leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania spp. parasites and Carrion's disease caused by the bacteria Bartonella bacilliformis. Both are a significant economic burden in rural areas and a major risk to military personnel deployed to endemic areas. To better understand transmission of these pathogens and epidemiological trends, sand flies were collected from nine sites across the Ecuador-Peru border region in 2015 and 2017 and screened for Leishmania usi

Subacute Bartonella quintana bacteremia following immunomodulatory therapy: a diagnostic challenge.

Bartonella quintana infection presents with a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from asymptomatic to severe disease. Its fastidious growth and immune evasion frequently delay diagnosis, leading to prolonged bacteremia and potential mismanagement. We report a case of subacute Bartonella quintana infection in a patient with newly diagnosed dermatomyositis, presenting with generalized myopathy, persistent low-grade fever, and suspected endocarditis. Blood cultures were intermittently positive, but conventional microbiological methods remained inconclusive. Serology was suggestive, while the defini
