BACKGROUND: Vector-borne pathogens are expanding in northern Europe as climate and host-vector communities change, shifting vector distributions, yet baseline data from boreal systems and early-life wildlife hosts remain scarce. Moose (Alces alces) represent a useful sentinel species for monitoring pathogen circulation at the wildlife-vector interface because they occupy diverse habitats and are widely distributed across boreal ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and phylogenetic location of Trypanosoma spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Bartonella spp. in moose calves d

The Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (ChEZ) is a unique area in the world. It combines two things: the largest man-made disaster site in the world and a radioecological observatory. The observatory has been studying the long-term impact of radioactive contamination on the environment, flora and fauna since 1986. Muridae and Cricetidae rodents being extremely widespread representatives of ChEZ fauna, serve as bioindicators for radioecological research. During 2019-2020, in addition to studying rodents as markers of radioactive contamination, 116 muroids were examined for the presence of parasites and b

Zoonotic pathogens are central to the One Health framework, and the role of companion animals in SARS-CoV-2 infection, particularly in co-infection scenarios, remains unclear. This study investigated the occurrence of SARS-CoV-2, hemopathogens, and co-infections in domiciled dogs and cats from COVID-19-positive households in Southeast Brazil. Between January 2021 and August 2022, samples were collected from 86 animals (48 dogs and 38 cats) in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. SARS-CoV-2 was detected by RT-qPCR, and hemopathogens were identified using nested and species-specific PCR assays. SARS-Co

Bartonella species are vector-borne pathogens that infect a wide range of hosts, including humans. Although several Bartonella species have been identified in rodents and arthropods in Korea, information on Bartonella detection in ticks removed from human patients remains limited. This study investigated the presence of Bartonella species DNA in human-biting ticks collected in Korea and screened for other tick-associated bacteria, including Coxiella endosymbiont. From January to December 2018, 35 ticks were removed from 29 tick-bitten patients in Jeollanam-do and Gwangju, Korea. Ticks were ide

BackgroundConsider this Carrion's disease (CD) is a biphasic illness-comprising acute and chronic phases-endemic to Peru and caused by Bartonella bacilliformis, a bacterium transmitted by sandflies. Despite its clinical relevance, the mechanisms underlying innate immune activation in response to B. bacilliformis remain poorly understood. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a central role in recognizing conserved molecular patterns present in pathogens, thereby initiating innate immune responses. The present study aimed to describe the expression patterns of TLR2 and TLR4, along with cytokine secre

Cytauxzoon spp. are tick-borne haemoprotozoans that infect domestic and wild felids and are of increasing relevance in veterinary medicine and epidemiology of vector-borne pathogens. In Brazil, the genetic diversity of these agents in wild felids has been progressively expanded, culminating in the description of Cytauxzoon brasiliensis. However, the occurrence of this species in domestic cats is unknown. Therefore, the present study aimed to detect and molecularly characterize C. brasiliensis in domestic cats from the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and to describe the main hematological find

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne pathogens (CVBPs) are increasingly relevant, particularly those of zoonotic concern, due to climate change and increased animal mobility. However, there is no information on the actual burden of these infections in canine populations in several Western and South-Central Asian countries, including Afghanistan. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the molecular prevalence of CVBP infections in stray and owned dogs across regions of Afghanistan.
METHODS: From July 2020 to August 2024, a total of 100 dogs with outdoor lifestyles in four provinces of Afghanist

Habitat fragmentation can negatively impact wildlife, including increasing infectious disease risk. We assessed spatiotemporal changes in pathogen dynamics in vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in response to habitat fragmentation using general linear mixed models to investigate the influence of site, year, and tree cover on Bartonella spp. and hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. (hemoplasmas) infection risk in bats in one large and one small forest fragment in Belize across seven years. While Bartonella infections were more likely in the final years of the study regardless of site, hemoplasma infection

BACKGROUND: Bartonella species are Gram-negative bacteria transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods and maintained in a wide range of mammalian hosts worldwide. They are emerging and re-emerging pathogens at the wildlife-domestic, animal-human interface. Wild canids are considered important reservoirs and sentinels for vector-borne pathogens, including zoonotic species of Bartonella. This study evaluated the eco-epidemiological traits and diversity of Bartonella infections among wild canids from Israel.
METHODS: Between 2018 and 2025, blood samples from wild canids were collected across 158 sam

Bartonella bovis is an emerging ruminant pathogen with zoonotic potential. Although various Bartonella species have been detected in animals in Thailand, none have been reported in dairy cattle. We investigated the occurrence and genetic characteristics of Bartonella spp. in dairy cattle from central Thailand and examined associations with farm management practices. Blood samples were collected from 522 cattle on 43 farms in four provinces and examined for Bartonella DNA by PCR targeting the gltA, rpoB, and ribC genes. Sequencing, phylogenetic analyses, and nucleotide sequence type (ntST) netw

Vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) comprise a diverse range of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and helminths, that are transmitted to vertebrate hosts by various species of arthropod vectors. The present study aimed to report the first data on the prevalence of VBPs in domestic cats in Kosovo and investigate associations with potential risk factors. Blood samples were collected from 107 domestic cats between April and October 2024 and preserved on filter papers. Samples were screened for VBPs, including Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp., Babesia spp., Hepatozoon spp., Cytauxzoon spp.

A 2-year-old, spayed female, mixed breed dog presented for evaluation of recurrent febrile episodes over 5 months, intermittently accompanied by the development of SC nodules. Histopathologic examination of the SC lesions was indicative of panniculitis. Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii genotype III DNA was amplified and sequenced from an excised SC nodule. Indirect immunofluorescence antibody titer was 1:64, whereas Bartonella blood PCR was negative. Babesia odocoilei-like species DNA was amplified and sequenced from 2 blood samples obtained 77 days apart at the time of febrile episodes.

The common vole (Microtus arvalis) is one of the most abundant rodent species in Europe and is known for its cyclic population outbreaks, which result in significant crop damage and an increased risk of transmission of zoonotic pathogens to humans. In this study, we confirmed that common voles are an important reservoir of multiple zoonotic pathogens in South Moravia, Czech Republic, with a high prevalence of infection and frequent co-infections. Overall, we found 70 (50%), 72 (51.4%), 50 (35.7%) and 35 (25%) positive voles for Leptospira spp., Bartonella spp., Brucella spp. and TULV, respecti

INTRODUCTION: Neuroretinitis is an inflammatory optic neuropathy characterized by optic disc edema followed by macular star formation. It is most commonly caused by Bartonella henselae, but other infectious etiologies including syphilis and cytomegalovirus (CMV) should be considered, particularly due to their potential for severe visual morbidity if untreated.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old immunocompetent female presented with unilateral visual blurring and headache. Ophthalmologic examination revealed optic disc edema, macular star exudates, and peripapillary hemorrhages in the right eye.

The genus Bartonella comprises over 40 species, most of which are haemoparasites of mammals. Herein, we describe Bartonella bennetti sp. nov., a novel member of the genus, isolated from field voles (Microtus agrestis) in Kielder Forest, UK. Polyphasic characterization of three strains (C271T, D105 and J117) of the proposed species indicated that they were closely related to members of phylogenetic lineage 3 (L3) of the genus. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) between C271T and other L3 species ranged between 88.8 and 90.6%, supporting the proposal of a new species. C271T shared ANIs approa

The genus Bartonella includes species responsible for severe infections. Bartonella henselae, commonly linked to human disease, also infects dogs with or without symptoms. In Brazil, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by Leishmania infantum is prevalent in Mato Grosso State, Brazil, particularly in Rondonopolis city, affecting both humans and dogs. Although reports of co-infection with Bartonella spp. and L. infantum exist in other countries, Brazilian studies are scarce. This study investigates the presence of B. henselae using culture and molecular methods in dogs suspected of having VL in R
