Bartonella transmission and gut microbiome dynamics in Ceratophyllus sciurorum fleas and their edible dormouse hosts (Glis glis).

BACKGROUND: The genus Bartonella comprises facultative intraerythrocytic bacteria capable of causing long-lasting bacteremia in their natural hosts, with zoonotic potential across multiple species. Rodents serve as important reservoirs for a broad diversity of Bartonella spp., with blood-feeding arthropods, particularly fleas, mediating transmission. Despite their frequent association with humans, the role of edible dormice (Glis glis) and their fleas (Ceratophyllus sciurorum) in Bartonella ecology remains poorly understood. METHODS: We combined long-term ecological and epidemiological data w

A systematic review of pathogens in the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus): What about vector-borne pathogens?

The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus), once considered the most endangered felid species worldwide, has experienced a remarkable recovery through intensive conservation efforts. Its small population size and low genetic diversity render it particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases, including those transmitted by arthropod vectors. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the current knowledge on pathogens investigated in the Iberian lynx, with a focus on vector-borne pathogens. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus, yielding 4

Structured missingness in biomedical research.

Antipathogen defense; b-caryophyllene; vector-virus mutualism Plants respond to insect herbivory by producing and releasing distinctive blends of volatile compounds. These herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) serve several roles, including direct defense through toxic or repellent effects on herbivores and indirect defense by attracting the herbivores' natural enemies (Bleeker et al. 2009; Veyrat et al. 2016). HIPVs also act as warning signals, informing undamaged tissues within the same plant and nearby plants of a pending insect attack (Heil and Bueno 2007). HIPVs are mostly composed of

Design and computational evaluation of a cross-protective multi-epitope vaccine candidate against Bartonella henselae and Bartonella clarridgeiae pathogens causing the zoonotic cat scratch disease in humans.

Cat scratch disease (CSD), primarily caused by Bartonella henselae and Bartonella clarridgeiae, presents a global zoonotic concern, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Conventional antibiotics offer limited protection, necessitating novel preventive strategies. Also, CSD is still one of the most prevalent infections brought on by Bartonella genus. The current study aimed at developing a multi-epitope peptide vaccine by targeting conserved antigenic proteins (Pap31, Omp43, and Omp89) from two Bartonella species utilizing immunoinformatics techniques. Comprehensive immunoinformatics a

Bartonella henselae tricuspid valve endocarditis presenting as fever of unknown origin.

Cat scratch disease (CSD), caused by Bartonella henselae, is an uncommon cause of fever of unknown origin (FUO) and rarely presents with visceral organ involvement. This case report describes a middle-aged woman with 3 months of night sweats and 1 month of fevers. Initial workup showed elevated inflammatory markers, multiple splenic lesions and a pelvic fluid collection. A detailed history noted that she recently adopted a stray kitten, prompting Bartonella serological testing. Given the atypical presentation, a broad infectious evaluation was also pursued, including testing for mycobacterial,

Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of cat scratch disease in children from southwestern China: a retrospective analysis of mNGS-confirmed cases.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Cat scratch disease (CSD) is a zoonotic infection predominantly caused by Bartonella henselae, typically featured by regional lymphadenopathy and febrile illness. Although these classic features characterize most cases, the clinical spectrum extends to severe systemic manifestations including meningitis and neuroretinitis, leading to poor prognosis. Given this potential for diverse clinical presentations, prompt microbiological confirmation becomes essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of CSD. The present study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis

Seroprevalence of Bartonella henselae Immunoglobulin G and Associated Risk Factors Among Adults Undergoing Health Screening in Urban Korea.

Bartonella henselae (B. henselae), the causative agent of cat-scratch disease, is a zoonotic pathogen transmitted mainly through pet-related injuries. Although infection is usually mild and self-limiting, severe complications have been reported. Despite increasing pet ownership in Korea, data on human exposure to B. henselae remain limited. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of B. henselae and to identify associated factors among adults undergoing health screening in urban Korea. A total of 509 adults undergoing routine health screening between August 2023 and February 2024 were e

From Acquisition to Transmission: Revisiting Bartonella henselae Infection in the Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides felis).

BACKGROUND: The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the primary arthropod vector responsible for the transmission of Bartonella henselae, the etiologic agent of cat scratch disease. Although domestic cats serve as the principal reservoir host, maintaining long-term intraerythrocytic bacteremia, the spread of B. henselae within feline populations relies entirely on flea-mediated acquisition and transmission. Early work demonstrated that fleas readily acquire the bacterium while feeding on bacteremic cats and can subsequently infect naïve hosts; however, the underlying biological mechanisms rema

Diagnosis of Cat-Scratch Disease by Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing.

Cat-scratch disease caused by Bartonella henselae is a worldwide distributed zoonotic disease. Cats are the major reservoirs of B. henselae, and human infection cases are usually resulted from contact with pet cats. In this study, a 49-year-old woman presented to the hospital after 10 days of fever. She also complaint lymph node enlargement and pain. Laboratory tests indicated liver dysfunction and inflammation. Pathological examination of the lymph node suggested the possibility of cat-scratch disease, and then doxycycline was used. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing showed that 59496 seq

Combination antibiotic therapy is required to eliminate Bartonella henselae in multiple microenvironments.

Bartonella are gram-negative, facultative intracellular bacteria. Infection by Bartonella manifests as different clinical syndromes collectively known as bartonellosis. The well-known diseases caused by these bacteria are cat scratch disease (Bartonella henselae), trench fever (Bartonella quintana) and Carrion's disease (Bartonella bacilliformis). Excluding B. bacilliformis, which is evolutionarily more distinct than the other species, Bartonella infections result in self-limiting disease that is often undiagnosed and untreated. However, individuals with compromised immune systems or other und

Severe Optic Neuroretinitis and Vitreous Hemorrhage in Pediatric Cat-Scratch Disease: A Case With Irreversible Visual Impairment.

BACKGROUND Cases of cat-scratch disease involving both systemic and ocular manifestations typically have a favorable prognosis and usually resolve spontaneously within 1-2 months. However, rare cases with severe ocular involvement may result in irreversible visual impairment. We report a pediatric case in which severe optic neuroretinitis and vitreous hemorrhage developed unilaterally, leading to poor visual recovery. CASE REPORT A 6-year-old girl presented with decreased vision in her right eye 2 months after a febrile illness. Best-corrected visual acuity was counting fingers at 10 cm in the
