Ultrabrief and Brief Pulse Right Unilateral Electroconvulsive Therapy for Catatonia Management and Relapse Prevention: Naturalistic Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: Catatonia is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by marked changes in psychomotor function and behavior. The gold standard for managing catatonia is electroconvulsive therapy. Although bitemporal lead placement is traditionally utilized for management, right unilateral lead placement may offer similar remission rates while offering better cognitive outcomes. Currently, unresolved questions impede utilization of right unilateral electroconvulsive therapy for catatonia, such as its efficacy and durability when managing severe manifestations of the syndrome such as deliri

Goal Pursuit-Focused CBT for Bipolar Disorder: A Four-Case Series.

BACKGROUND: BD is a chronic, cyclical condition marked by severe mood instability and significant impairment. Although pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions have demonstrated efficacy, challenges remain in preventing relapse and sustaining long-term euthymia. This study evaluates a CBT-based intervention designed to reduce symptom severity and recurrence by targeting three core maintenance factors: intolerance of anergic states, addiction to mania, and meta-emotional problems. METHOD: Four individuals diagnosed with BD participated in a one-year CBT intervention tailored to addr

Post-secondary student adoption of mental health labels through their use of social media: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social media is a significant source of information for post-secondary students, who are usually at the age at which many common mental disorders first express themselves. Social media can have a role in the way post-secondary students identify and act on mental health issues. OBJECTIVES: Explore how the use of social media influences post-secondary students' adoption of mental health labels. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We included empirical studies on mental health labelling in the context of social media use among post-secondary students published in English between January 1995 and

White matter microstructure mediates the link between rest-activity rhythm instability and mania symptoms in individuals at risk for bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence and young adulthood are critical periods for the emergence of bipolar disorder (BD). Instability in sleep and rest-activity rhythms is associated with elevated risk for BD, yet little is known about the neural correlates of this vulnerability. White matter organization in fronto-limbic pathways, which support mood regulation and show sensitivity to sleep/rest-activity rhythm disruption, offers a promising avenue for investigation. METHODS: Participants (16-24y;N=112) recruited across a spectrum of mania vulnerability (MOODS-SRL) completed 14 days of actigraphy followed

Circulating levels of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor in bipolar disorder: A meta-analysis of case-control studies and efficacy of therapeutic interventions.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and debilitating mental illness characterized by alternating episodes of mania and depression, affecting approximately 5-6% of the global population. Despite extensive research, the underlying pathophysiology of BD remains poorly understood, necessitating further exploration of potential biomarkers. This meta-analysis investigates peripheral levels of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) to evaluate its utility as a biomarker in individuals with BD. METHODS: We systematically searched four international databases, identifying 13 cas

Profiles of lithium prescriptions and serum concentrations among patients with bipolar disorder based on latent variable analysis.

BACKGROUND: The advantages of lithium in treating bipolar disorder (BD) are inconsistent with a declining trend in lithium prescriptions worldwide. Understanding lithium prescription patterns and serum concentrations could improve lithium clinical practices. METHODS: This multicentre study used latent variable analysis to explore lithium prescription patterns and changing trends in lithium serum concentrations. A regression model was used to identify their underlying associated factors. RESULTS: High- and low-dose prescription patterns were discovered in patients with mania and bipolar depre

Effects of intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) on post-stroke depression (PSD): A study protocol for a single-center randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) is a specific type of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) paradigm with long-lasting effects and a short session duration. Although randomized controlled trials have suggested that iTBS is effective for treating depression, few studies have investigated the effects of iTBS in treating post-stroke depression (PSD). The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether iTBS can be used to treat PSD. We will also investigate the corresponding mechanisms of iTBS via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS

Validating an adaptive digital assessment of youth mental health needs: a cross-sectional study.

Digital mental health assessments can effectively link young people to appropriate health services. Current approaches often lack personalization, failing to recognize the complex and multidimensional needs of young people. 1734 young people aged 12-25 years completed seven standardized measures (49 items) using a digital health assessment tool while receiving mental health care. A multidimensional computerized adaptive test (MCAT) was developed to predict scores on seven standardized scales, spanning clinical symptoms, suicidality, functioning, and alcohol use. Different adaptive tests were s

Clinical practice guidelines for the management of bipolar disorder: 2025 update.

The Indian Psychiatric Society has previously published guidelines for the management of bipolar disorder (BD) in adults (2017) and children and adolescents (2019). The present guideline summarizes the major advancements in the management of BD since these publications. To make the guideline handier for the clinical practitioner, we have made several structural changes compared to the 2017 guideline. First: we have adopted a phase-specific approach with different sections and management algorithms for each major phase of BD (mania, depression, and mixed episodes in bipolar type I disorder [BD-

Antidepressant-Associated Risk of Manic and Mixed Episode Hospitalization in Bipolar I Disorder: A 10-Year Population-Based Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Antidepressant (AD) use in bipolar I disorder (BD-I) remains controversial due to concerns about inducing manic/mixed episodes. We examined hospitalization risk following AD initiation in BD-I patients. METHODS: Using electronic health records from Catalonia (2010-2019), we conducted a retrospective cohort study of 7946 BD-I patients. We performed 1:1 propensity score matching based on age, sex, comorbidity count, and baseline mood stabilizer and antipsychotic use, yielding 3973 AD users matched to 3973 controls (mean age 50.9 years, 47.3% female) with 12-month follow-up. Functional network comparative area and topography analysis (FUNCATA) in non-affective psychosis: a replication study.

Resting-state fMRI studies consistently demonstrate widespread dysconnectivity in schizophrenia (SZ), yet conventional analytic methods often fail to account for individual variability in functional brain organization. This study utilized individualized assessments of network size and topography to examine functional alterations in early psychosis. MRI data were drawn from the Human Connectome Project - Early Psychosis study (ages 18-34), including 86 individuals with non-affective psychosis (NAP) and 57 healthy controls (HC). Ten large-scale functional networks were delineated using template-
