Family interactions in youth at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P).

This study examined family interactions in 162 youths at clinical high risk for psychosis and their mothers and fathers, using both observational data (a family problem-solving task) and self-report measures. We evaluated the association between family communication and youths' symptoms of psychosis, depression, and anxiety. Youths, mothers, and fathers rated family communication as one of the top three sources of family tension. During a 10-min problem-solving discussion, parents communicated significantly more constructively than clinical high risk for psychosis youths. Constructive communic

Latent profiles of Big Five personality traits among Chinese university students and their associations with psychological distress and health-related quality of life: The moderating role of the school sports environment.

Variable-centred research overlooks how personality dimensions combine within individuals. This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify Big Five personality profiles among 2291 Chinese university students, examine profile differences in depression, anxiety, stress, and mental and physical health-related quality of life, and test whether the school sports environment moderated profile differences in health-related quality of life. Participants completed the Big Five Inventory-10 (BFI-10), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36),

Neural Response to Monetary and Social Feedback in Childhood: Processing Reward and Loss in Relation to Peer Outcomes and Anxiety Symptoms.

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent psychiatric conditions in childhood and are associated with social functioning impairment. How youth process rewards may contribute to the development of social impairment in childhood anxiety. Although aberrant reward processing is a well-established mechanism of psychopathology, associations with anxiety remain inconsistent and limited, especially in childhood. This study investigated neural response to monetary and social reward feedback in relation to anxiety and peer functioning in children. Children (N=106; Age=8.12±.68 years) completed the Doors

The effects of virtual reality on anxiety and depression in cancer patients: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression are prevalent yet undertreated in cancer patients, impairing quality of life, treatment adherence, and outcomes. Virtual reality, with its immersive and interactive features, offers a promising non-pharmacological intervention. However, a rigorous synthesis of randomized evidence is needed to establish its efficacy and identify key moderators of effectiveness, guiding targeted clinical implementation. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across seven electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, CNKI, WanFang, VIP) from inc

The Japanese Adaptation of the Reading the Mind in Films Test: Differentiating Autism Spectrum Disorder From Depression Using an Ecologically Valid Social Cognitive Task.

Cognitive tests that reflect the complexity of real-world social interactions are essential for autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-related clinical assessment and research. This study developed and adapted a Japanese version of the Reading the Mind in Films (RMF) test, which assesses mind-reading ability through dynamic, multisensory, and context-rich stimuli. Participants included 23 autistic adults, 39 typically developing adults, and 40 adults with depression as a clinical control. RMF scores in the autistic group were significantly lower than in both the typically developing and depression gro

The Impact of Psychosocial Factors on Pain and Functional Outcomes After Rotator Cuff Repair: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Outcomes after rotator cuff repair are commonly evaluated in terms of structural healing and surgical technique. However, psychological factors may also influence patients' experience of pain and functional recovery. Increasing attention has therefore been directed toward the potential role of preoperative psychological distress in shaping postoperative outcomes. In this review we aimed to systematically review the available evidence examining whether psychological factors present before surgery are associated with postoperative pain and functional outcomes following rotator cuff

Bereavement, Psychological Distress, and Inflammation: Findings From the MIDUS Refresher Cohort.

Bereavement can adversely affect psychological and physical health. Using MIDUS Refresher 1 data, we examined psychological and inflammatory differences between bereaved (n = 373) and non-bereaved (n = 490) adults and tested whether depression, anxiety, and stress moderated associations between bereavement and inflammation. Participants completed measures of depressive symptoms, anxiety, and perceived stress and provided blood samples for interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Adjusting for key covariates, bereaved participants reported signifi

Health status beyond survival: clinical validation of the EuroQol-5D-3L in octogenarians undergoing abdominal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing has increased the number of very old adults undergoing abdominal surgery. In this group, outcomes beyond mortality and morbidity, including functional status and quality of life, are highly relevant. The EuroQol 5D-3L questionnaire is widely used, but evidence of its psychometric performance in patients aged 80 years and older undergoing surgery remains limited. This study evaluated its measurement properties in this population. METHODS: A scale validation study was conducted. Health status was measured using the EuroQol 5D-3L questionnaire and its visual analogu

Modic changes, chronic low back pain, and lifestyle and mental health factors: a cross-sectional analysis of a cohort study.

PURPOSE: Modic changes (MC) are vertebral endplate and adjacent bone marrow MRI findings that have been associated with chronic low back pain (CLBP), although their clinical relevance remains debated. This study examined whether MC presence and extent are associated with CLBP status, pain intensity, and disability, and whether lifestyle or mental health factors moderate the MC-pain relationship. METHODS: This exploratory cross-sectional sub-study included 239 adults: 135 with CLBP and 104 controls without. Lumbar MRI scans were evaluated for MC presence, type, craniocaudal extent of vertebral

Limitations of PHQ-9 as a first line mental health screener in primary care.

BACKGROUND: The PHQ-9, originally designed as an assessment for depression, is now widely used as a first line screener in primary care and is often the sole mental health screener used. However, it is currently unknown how well the PHQ-9 performs as a general screener for mental distress. Here we aim to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the (PHQ-9) for capturing general or transdiagnostic mental distress, defined as experiencing 5 or more severe mental health symptoms. METHODS: PHQ-9 responses were collected alongside responses to the transdiagnostic Mental Health Quotient (MHQ) a

Semaglutide modulates explore/exploit decision-making in major depressive disorder: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Explore/exploit decision-making is a crucial component of motivated behavior. Explore/exploit behaviors are related to disparate cognitive and reward-related functions and have been implicated in multiple neuropsychiatric conditions, including major depressive disorder (MDD). Several mediators of explore/exploit decision-making have been proposed; metabolic mechanisms have been theorized to potentially affect its underlying processes. Here, we examined the effects of a GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA), semaglutide, on explore/exploit behavior in patients with MDD, using a four-arme

When Resilience Is Not Enough: Enacted Stigma and Mental Health of Trans and Nonbinary People.

Trans and nonbinary (TNB) people are subject to social and institutional marginalization, and simultaneously report varied experiences of resilience. We developed and validated a novel measure of TNB-specific resilience and were following our participants longitudinally when our NIH grant was unjustly terminated. Resisting the government's efforts to derail science, the current study uses our baseline data to understand whether the positive effects of resilience on mental health hold across various levels of enacted stigma. Our sample included 608 participants between the ages of 18 and 77 yea

Global organization of structural covariance networks derived from parcellated cortical surface area in atypical populations.

Higher-order features of brain organization are powerful measures for understanding the relationship between brain and experience. In particular, the global arrangement of structural features of the cortex provides insight into neurodevelopmental processes that underlie individual differences in perception and cognition. Structural covariance networks (SCNs), which capture regional coordination of brain morphometry, are an efficient method to derive global cortical properties. However, their interpretation relies on an array of methodological choices that are often inconsistent between studies
